Come Monday, things will look a little different on Family Feud. It's the same set, but dressed up a little. OK, a lot. First thing you'll notice is that there are a lot more lights - several rows of classsic-style white lights on each side of the board, and some more in an oval around the board itself (kinda like in Louie Anderson's day). They've added a few new color gels for the background, with purple and yellow figuring prominently near the leading edge of the families' podiums during play. The walls behind the families now sport a layered look, with lights between each of the layers. The most jarring change is underneath the big board, where there's now a grid of interlocking squares that kind of clashes with the art deco flavor added to the rest of the set. I think it's nice, but the squares under the board are really unnecessary. B+.
-
Sounds nice...but I did like the set as it was before!
And how did you find this out?
-
I recorded the feed for Tuesday's show today.
-
Do they still D0UBL3 TH3 P01NTS!!!!111!!!!! If so, I might make a weekend stop at Bed Bath and Beyond.

Richard's going one better this season: "I have to TRIPLE the points!" Have to?!

Now! How about the music? Tis the same? And have they gone to an unlimited wins format in case the Jennings or Madden families decide to compete?

I've been wondering how the background changes to so many different colors. (Another such example, albeit not the most on-topic one, would be So You Think You Can Dance.) Looks a lot more complex than just shining different colors of lights on a tall white curtain.

Just saw the new set-
GOOD news: :looks more game show-ey, more flashing lights, and seems a lot um, bigger.
BAD news: The squares behind the board look strange and a little off.

There are two new families seen at the top of the first show of the season in single run markets. I'm guessing the shows are run out of order, as the last winning family from the last show last season aren't back.
-
Is it possible that the Feud set is made to mirror the flashiness of the set for Cien Mexicanos Dijieron?
-
Anyone else look at the shape's of the 4-sided 'tapered' squares on the survey board and think they got the idea from the Jeopardy Podiums?
And now flashing lights on the stage floor -- Add a mirrored disco ball and we could stage a "Saturday Night Fever" vs. "Dance Fever" special week of shows. (Team Travolta vs Team Terio).

I'll be one of the few that says that I actually love the new set. Best set they've had of this incarnation of the show. The entire set changing colors constantly really isn't my thing, but whatever. The only issues I have right now is Richard and the camera workers. They do really insanely quick pan in/out views and too much twisting camera views.

I'm with you on your comments. I actually like the look of the set this season too. I agree totally about the quick camera pan, especially when beginning the face-off. But I think the additional lights looks nice.

When I saw it today, I was surprised by how much lighting they put into it. I say that's some pretty good creativity on that part.

It's probably more of a benefit to the program staff (fewer families to audition) and the families (more potential earnings.) They probably figure we viewers will watch the shows in whatever order they are shown.
-
That's really strange. My station staggers the airings (7:30AM and 3:00PM). My 7:30AM airing had a family continuing for their 5th episode. My 3:00PM airing had two new families. I might just be stating what has already been said, but I don't know. It seemed like returning champs from last season to me.

I see. "You remember the Applegate family. They were here two weeks and four days ago. Whoever wins will be back a week from Thursday and the winning family from three weeks ago Monday will return tomorrow".

No they can't do that because if the reruns go to GSN, they will be run in production order.
-
After seeing some pics of it, I can say it's not bad, has a Vegas look to it, but those squares on the board are too much. It makes a pretty nice set look a little too busy.

The new set is pretty nice, and it really speaks to the skills of Jimmy Cuomo - a disciple of the great Ed Flesh.
That 94 set, though... poor Bente...
-
I think the new set is decent, but they're starting to go back to a "Mid-90s Talk Show" style set. I would have liked to see the lights chase, but it's nice that they're there.
Too much on the translucent color screen things. Reminiscent of the "Millions of colors" WOF set. I agree with the cheesy "instant zoom" at every face-off. And I also don't like how they stretch the face off cue and repeat that stab sometimes 3 or 4 times.
On the whole, it's all about the game and I'm still happy to see this show on the air.

I read somewhere (alright, the Perfesser) that the winning family on yesterday's show was from New Orleans--you think that Fremantle might've picked that one to air as the season-opener? (And something tells me that Fremantle should've sent the check early--if they're alive and well.)
-
I happened upon Feud while flipping through the channels earlier. I'm not a big Feud fan... and haven't been through any incarnation of the show.
I will say this though... I like the new set. The colors are cool... the lights are cool... even those squares that everyone is bitching about are pretty cool.
Someone here once said that most people here on the board are resistant to ANY change. If it's a change from the norm... they instantly don't like it. The new colors on the TPiR turntable for example. At least after 30-some years they're still basically using the same set they've always had. The Hollywood mural was a drastic change... which is why I think most people hated it. I'm sure if you asked them... they'll say something like "The colors sucked" or "It looked like it didn't belong there" or "It just wasn't the SAME".
At least the Feud set is still using eggcrates.
"Not a sermon... just a thought."

I don't have a problem with it at ALL. It's a (gasp!) set that looks more like a game show and less like a construction site, and people are complaining about it. Flabbergasting.

Nah, I like the colors on TPiR (the pinks and blue). And actually, I really liked TNPiR '94's set. I wish Barker's would adopt it in some sort of form. I just think the changes to Feud's set look like a hot mess.
A miniscule change I like is the new flashing lights around WOF's score readouts. It clarifies things, IMO.

Let it be known, that while I might think the Feud's set is a bit busy, it won't keep me from watching the show (why, who the Hell would do such a thing? No one HERE!). All I know is it's still two families of five finding the top answers to a survey, D0UBL3 TH3 P01NTS!!! be damned. Same goes for J! As much as I can't stand the J! set, it's still the same Q&A (A&Q?) show it's been for 40 1/2 years (would be 41, but there was the 1978 revival ;-) ). And I think that's the problem...some people like to think that a set change is the Jump The Shark point for a game show.
I have no problem with visual change...it keeps the show from getting stale, but some changes might not look good in my opinion, but again, if it's the same general gameplay without trying to do too much (*coughwheelcough*), I'll watch.
-
I still stand by my dislike of TPIR's pastel mural on the turntable, on purely disinterested aesthetic grounds. It was that particular combination--there's nothing wrong with the solid pastels on the current turntable, and the mural looked pretty damn nice in dark blue shades on the first few MDS specials. But the daytime mural, puke-o.
May finally get to see Feud's new set tomorrow morning.
-
For those who have not yet been able to see the updated Feud set, I recorded the show on my computer yesterday and will post some pics of the updated set on my web site later this evening.
Personally, I like the changes. I don't like it any more than the set before it, but I do like it. I especially liked the more dramatic lighting used for Fast Money.
-
I just saw the new set this morning and I like it...classy in some ways, nice game show flash in others. It's nice.

I like that the set looks bigger now. I bet I could sit in the audience for hours fish-eyed, just staring at the color-changing patterns. If they would hold on a wide shot of the set for more than a couple of seconds, the massive color changing would probably look better on TV -- the effect doesn't come across as well when, for example, they show the families clapping during the credits and you can only see the center wall.
As for continuity, I don't remember the name of the winning family from last season's final episode, but on the Monday episode of the CBS2 run in Los Angeles, Richard made a passing comment to the head of the Rudolph family that it had been about two months since he'd seen them. So I think that one of the runs is going in proper chronological order.
