Title: TPIR Pricing Game Set Revamps...
Post by: TimK2003 on September 02, 2005, 05:09:21 PM
I watched Price for the first time in quite a while, and saw that one of the oldest games, 10 Chances finally got somewhat of a remodeling make-over -- the 10 numbered push-buttons have all been replaced by 10 new plain red buttons with the numbers above them.

Which got me to thinking...

1) Out of all the pricing games that are 15 years old or more (Pre-1990):

A•  Which pricing game sets/props have never been revamped (new lights, fonts, color schemes, new, or additional readouts etc,...)

B•  And which of the older game sets has gone the longest since it's last make-over?

2) And out of all the games ever played on the show:

C•  Which pricing game sets have had the most make-overs?

I believe Bonus Game was last revamped in '76 or so; and Poker Game ('75?) has never been revamped.

Quote
B•  And which of the older game sets has gone the longest since it's last make-over?
Probably most of the 1986 sets, such as Any Number and Temptation.  Any others don't come to immediate mind.

Quote
C•  Which pricing game sets have had the most make-overs?
Double Prices appears to have 5, looking at Brad's site.

I'm sure someone has better answers than I....this is based of my recollection only.

The buttons were only done for functionality.

I'm sure you can make a case for On the Nose! ;)

BTW, the Ten Chances buttons have been there since around early 2004 (January?).

No fancy quoting here.  I'm feeling lazy. :-)

Bonus Game's current color scheme debuted sometime in 1981 or 1982.  Brad doesn't have a picture of it.

Poker Game's board has never changed, but the price prop had a flashy-looking dollar sign added to it sometime in the '90s.

Temptation is not a "1986 set."  I don't know when its color scheme changed, but it was still green in March, 1987.

In addition to having five sets, Double Prices's logo has also been written in two different fonts.

I didn't look it up, but they've never changed Cliffhangers.

Race Game looks the same, too. The clock looks to have been replaced--the black area is bigger now--but it's still an eggcrate display. The green asterisks were added to the price stands at some point.

Range Game has gone a while without new paint.

Actually, they have -- at some point, they redesigned the mountain climber.

1986-1987 was a year of many pricing game revamps...

Any Number went from a rectangle to a football shaped board (the "Car" slot could be moved to conceal the first number for 4 digit cars)

Lucky Seven went from blue to purple, and also could be used for 4 or 5 digits

Money Game became "BIG Money Game" but the revamp of the game itself didn't occur until a few years later

3 Strikes and Dice Game became 3 Strikes + and DELUXE Dice Game

Hole in One became Hole in One or TWO (the rotating sign would debut sometime in the early 90s)

Add Em Up faced retirement because it was the only car game that couldn't be adapted for 5 digit prices

Punch A Bunch also got a small revamp in the 87 season... anyone care to guess?

Logo change from that weird logo to the blue circles reading "PUNCHBOARD"?

Nah, they had those blue circles ince the start.
My guess is thats when they changed the slips from white to yellow.

Having taken my daily dose of Horanstones...

To the best of my knowledge, Big Money Game was only played on the Kennedy version.  5-digit Money Game was played with the game's original board, but its format is distinct from Big Money Game.

Deluxe Dice Game and 3 Strikes + first appeared in 1983.

Hole in One or Two's current sign was in place by September 14, 1988 at the latest.

Add 'em Up debuted in 1986.  It wasn't retired until at least 1988, and possibly 1989.

I don't know what the Punch a Bunch set change is, but it hasn't been guessed yet -- the slips had changed by the '86 Specials, and the "PUNCHBOARD" holes were part of the game's original format.  Just a thought...Matt might be jokingly referring to the first show after Bob changed his hair; they played Punch a Bunch that day, and Janice used chalk to give Bob white hair on the $10,000 bill.  EDIT:  And Brandon, the original Punch a Bunch logo was there for the entire lifespan of the game's first set.

I knew I wasn't the only one that noticed that.  Damn, even my wife looked at me like I was crazy, lol.

Give Or Keep never went through much of a change other than the name of the game getting bigger.

Danger Price hasn't changed since it's big change since the middle 80's.

Pick-A-Number I don't think has been revamped..... ever (do they even play it anymore?)

Master Key hasn't changed at all has it?  I don't think it has.

Continuing the vitamin-induced frenzy...

Give or Keep didn't have a logo -- just labels for the "Keep" column and the "Give" column.  It did undergo two color changes, in 1975 and 1983.

Pick-a-Number is generally played 2-5 times a year, and its set has never been altered.

Master Key...this is totally idiotic, but it has undergone a minor change.  When they changed the border of the Turntable walls from green to gold in 1992, they repainted the back of the Master Key sign to match it, because if the camera takes too wide a shot, it can be seen sticking out over the wall.  I'm not even sure why I know they did that, but I do.

(Guys, stop me if this starts to get annoying.  My worst fear is becoming Zach, because I know I could if I wanted to.)

While I can't speak for everybody Steve, I say bring it on. While Zach continues to repeat the same info over and over again unwarranted (I think he literally copy/pastes his blurbs by now), you are providing fresh trivia that's *gasp* on-topic.

That's what I was refering to. Later that season, they did update Bob's picture on the $10k bill. Oddly enough, on the Kennedy version, they had a picture of a younger Tom Kennedy without glasses. (I don't recall if they had a $10k bill with Doug's picture on the Doug Davidson version)

I know the award for the most drastic change goes to Pick-A-Pair.  From ferris wheel to standard platforms, wow was all I thought.

And while I'm at it, other to reflect inflation, has Bullseye changed at all?  I can't remember when it started whether or not it's name was on it.

The numbers on the board have changed.  From the original amounts ($1-6?), to the second amounts ($6-10?), to the current ones ($2-12?)

I don't believe there was a 6-10.  IIRC, the 2-12 took effect with the 1986 shows.

Note that I don't take Horanstone vitamins.

The values on Bullseye have been $5-10, $1-$6, and $2-$12.  I'd always assumed that the most recent change had occurred closer to 1990, but I really don't know; can anyone clarify that?

Also, the green arrow on the board changed at some point...maybe when the most recent value change happened, since the numbers were altered, as well.  You can see the differences at Brad's site.

I'll at least give Zach credit for having the good sense to not make a thread about seeing Wheel clips on Hurricane Katrina specials, unlike some of the other insensitive pricks on this board.

What were the air dates? We need air dates! The year isn't good enough. There are 365 days in a year. It could have been any one of them! I don't want year, I don't want month, I want AIR DATES, dammit!

Folks, as much as we all have our issues with Horan, might I humbly suggest that we save our complaints for the threads where he actually butts in.  There are more than enough places for well-deserved Zach-Bashing.  This isn't one of them.
