So when are you going to Atlantic City for The Price Is Live? I thought it'd be nice to have a dedicated thread for this, so you could get a better idea of who to meet (or avoid) when you're going; or maybe even get some people together to go as a group or two. Me? I'd love to, but my job and life in general are in flux right now, so I'll need to get back to you. What's your story?

My wife and I will be there August 18th - 22nd. We are a definite for the following shows: August 18th 7pm and August 19th 7pm (meeting Goongas) and 10pm. We are not sure about August 21st yet, but it is very likely we will attend that day as well.

Last year they used Race Game, It's in the Bag($150-$300-$600-$1200-$2400 in the bags), Cliff Hangers, Hole in One or Two. I believe they've added Clock Game this year, maybe Mr. West or someone who has been there can confirm. Last year's rule was you couldn't be in the contestant pool more than four times, or that you couldn't be an onstage contestant more than once every 30 days. Whether those rules have been changed this year I am not sure, as I have not gone yet, but probably will when our newsgroup's own is starring :)

I'm going the day after my 21st BDay, August 21. Hey, I just hope I get the chance to meet Marc and Randy...that'll be birthday present enough.

I was thinking of seeing this too. But not sure when I might see it .
I'll just have to check with Ticketmaster and see what available.

Marc starts Sunday 8/7 for 3 weeks. According to his website, Todd returns 8/28-9/9. Marc Walberg's site also confirms he'll be doing shows in September. Probably the rest of the run after Todd.
I am unsure of how many times you can see the show and be still eligible to be a contestant.
4 times and that's it. The 4 show limit also overflows into the Harrah's run starting in November. So it's 4 total for both runs, not 4 each.

Word is, and maybe someone confirm, that the elderly weren't responding fast enough, although since this new way is also timed, I don't know how much difference that could be. Maybe it's to increase their chances since most items are priced from the 70's & 80's and they would know best?

Assuming they're using clips from the actual show for their "Price was Right" qualifying game, it'd be an advantage to those from this group who have a lot of classic Price episodes in their collection, as some of the prices could be memorized.

Report from the road:
The show is unstoppable - I haven't seen an empty seat from the stage since we started! Lots of winners with exactly $1.00 on the big wheel, and an AMAZING Cliffhangers win with the mountain climber never leaving the bottom of the mountain - three EXACT prices!
Marc Summers is great, and has become a wonderful friend. Todd and I reunite here on August 28th for more TPiR-LIVE fun! Hope to see, eat, drink, and party with the Big Boarders!

Just got back from the 4pm show.
Summers was a suprise. He played it straight. I was expecting a bit more enthusiasm at times, but I enjoyed his work. He kept the show going at a very quick pace which was welcomed.
Overall, I think he's better than Newton, but Walberg was slightly better.
I wasn't suprised how many people wanted autographs and pictures from him after the show.
I hope we can find out who this host is that is to be added to the roster (provided all the details are finalized).
-
I'd imagine Summers did a great job. Walberg was amazing, though. What a sense of humor. Great guy, too. Wish he could've stuck around longer last year. (I also wish I could schedule a trip to AC soon to see Todd. Workin' on it.)
-
I ended up going to the first show...I was in the second IUFB for those who went there (big guy in khaki colored shirt with black Wheel of Fortune hat). Kinda miffed that they had to use James and not Jim for my name (though hey, they gotta go by birthnames)...oh well, a dream fulfilled, my chance to hear my name being called to come on down...oh yeah and Randy saying it was nice too.
I'll agree with the takes on Marc. I think he did a solid job but early on he seemed to play it a little too straight, especially during Race Game. Situation occurred where the contestant went from 0 right to 2 right to 4 right. Everyone and their sister knew the lady on stage had it won (1 switch needing to be made and all), yet Marc sorta was ho-hum on it. That said, he was a good host, and he and Randy have a nice rapport on stage.
Marc and Randy were class acts after and were very gracious in talking with me and taking pics with me and everyone. Now, if only the next IUFB were the models...

That's weird: When I last went to the show (last fall in AC),
I had no problem using "Dave" as my name on the tag, rather
than "David".
Now, when I went to LA to see the show...it was "David", no
choice there.
-
IIRC, from what I was told when we saw TPIR in LA 2 years ago, they have to go with exactly what is on your Social Security Card. When my wife was called down at TV City, Randy had to call her by her maiden name, although her Drivers License was already in her new married name as we were married 4 days before.
As to why she still had her old SSC, we were told by the local SS office before our honeymoon that she would have to surrender her old card when she applied for the name change, and there was no guarantee that she would get her new card in time before we left. Instead of risking her not being eligible to be a possible contestsnt (although they did say if chosen, you have x number of days to cough up a SSC to earn your prizes) she just kept her old card until we came back.
Which still doesn't explain why some game shows allowed people to use their nicknames or preferred names on the air.
-

All I know is that in L.A., the rule is that you have to go by the first and last name that you would use as if you were filing your taxes that day. So I guess it has something to do with making things easier on the people who have to report to the IRS on how much in winnings each contestant went away with -- this is the first name, this is the last name, this is their Social Security number, and this is how much they won. Throw a "goes by" in there, and then there's a greater chance of them making a mistake, I would assume.

I saw the Friday night show. I thought Marc was great as well, better than Todd Newton, but not overwhelmingly better (Todd was great too). There was one slipup as Marc allowed a contestant to change an answer, but the producer later overruled him (in It's in the Bag). Earlier in the Hole in One or Two game, he let the contestant change her answer and the producer didn't seem to mind.
-
Well, looks like we're going to miss seeing marc, and our window of opportunity is going to be Setpember 4th - the 10th. My guess is we'll go down on Labor DAy weekend, or the Sunday before.

Nice. So in order to make things more convenient for Fremantle, they can't afford me the simple courtesy (and it IS a simple courtesy) of using the name I wish to be called by. They have my Social Security number, that should be all they need, tax-wise. This is WHY SS numbers EXIST, even.
Strike TPiR from the list of potential game shows, I guess.
Does this crap happen in Canada? With each passing day I'm seeing fewer and fewer reasons why I want to be affiliated with this government. :P
-
I think you're blowing this whole process way out of proportion. The reason they make you use your legal first name is probably out of convenience. Think of the shear volume of contestants TPiR processes daily. It would add even MORE time to the interview process to ask EVERY SINGLE PERSON what name they want to use.
Requiring you to follow certain rules also puts in the back of your head the need to listen carefully to the name being called.
If you're not going to go see Price is Right solely because they won't let you go by whatever nickname you use...you're being moronic. Lighten up.

Yeah. Whatever. "How do you want to be called?" "Mark". That's not that hard, is it?
Also, some people have some obscure names, for whatever reason, be it parents or religious preferences. Do you really want to be called "Alakuzamah" when everyone in the world knows you as "Bob"?

The hell it would. ONE LINE on the application. "Legal Name For Tax Purposes" "Preferred Name You Wish To Be Called (If Any)". Simple, direct, and a COMMON COURTESY. If they're worried about contestants screwin' that up when they fill out the form, then maybe those folks shouldn't be contestants. God knows it would make a great moron filter where the show could prolly use one.
If you're not going to go see Price is Right solely because they won't let you go by whatever nickname you use...you're being moronic. Lighten up.
I was waiting for this: Spoken like someone who didn't have to correct EVERY SINGLE teacher for a week (and sometimes the entire YEAR, when said teacher felt like being an asshat) for twelve years of schooling. Until you've been in those shoes, and you have some idea of how freakin' irritating that is, you are in no position to tell me to lighten up.
Am I boycotting the show altogether? No. Never said that. Would I remove myself from the contestant pool because they don't wish to afford me that common courtesy, and make sure they knew WHY? Absolutely I would. (Would they care? Prolly not. One more idiot in a B0B R00LZ T-shirt they can pick instead of me. But I'm gonna do my part to let them know, I'd be doing myself a disservice if I did anything else.) What interest do I have in my Big Moment on TV if I'm being called by a name I hate?
("So why don't you change your name, Chris?" Couple reasons. Too much hassle, mostly. Plus I don't trust Keepers Of Records not to completely screw things up in the process and have it bite me in the ass later; they do a fine enough job of that now with my name static. And, quite simply, I shouldn't have to. I have chosen to use "Chris Lemon" as my legal name (and my legal name and my birth name are two distinctly different things), and the world ought to damn well respect that.)
-
Who knew one little thing I said would turn into the end of the world for Chris Lemon. I keed, I keed.
But, Chris I would say you're taking things at least a little too seriously. It's all over a damn name! If a name that makes you cream yourself or magically turns you into the Incredible Hulk upon Rich Fields saying "CAMMM ANNNN DOOOOOOOOOOOOWN!*" will completely prevent you being in the audience of the show, then all the better chance I have. And, all the more weirder you become.
Listen, I'm not keen on being called "James". But, hell you give me a chance to win money or a car, you can call me Jim, James, Jamie, Jameel, Jamar, and some unpronounceable multisyllabic name that is a combination of any of the names I mentioned.
It's all done because of the simple concept of simplicity. Remember, you didn't pay for the tickets (you may have paid for the airfare or gas, but to them that's a moot point), so in the end, you cater to them. Maybe they give you more leeway in A.C. because the patrons there pay to see the show. I didn't get the leeway, but hey no problem. Then again, heh we got free tix. Just a thought, kids.
Anyway, steering it back on a happier note, I'll probably put a page on my site dedicated to the experience, and when it's up I shall link y'all and let y'all know about it.

If you're kvetching to a page, they'll just shrug and politely tell you that they're only following orders. If you're telling this to Stan and Scott out in line, you'll get a strange look and then they'll go backstage and laugh with everyone else about the asshat who didn't want to be on the show because of his name -- assuming you were memorable enough in your rant.
Another reason for the use of the legal first name is to prevent contestants from using less-than-savory nicknames. "Well, you let 'Chris' use his nickname. Why can't I be 'Stinky'? That's what all my friends call me!"
It all goes back to the if-I-do-it-for-one-person-I-have-to-do-it-for-everyone mentality, and while you and I could probably sit down and approve which nicknames are acceptable and which aren't, the staff doesn't have time to take calls every 10 minutes from a page asking if it's okay if Richard Hertz or Michael Hunt go by their nicknames.
-

Give me a damn break. I'm not surprised that someone would raise a ridiculously hypothetical situation. If there's a person who can't see the reasonable difference between "Chris" and "Stinky", said person probably shouldn't be on the show either.

And, again, I say, until you've been in those shoes (and James/Jim doesn't even come CLOSE, I'll have you know), then you making a judgment from a complete position of ignorance.
If it were an issue of Chris/Christopher, I wouldn't care one bit. It's not. A variant on a preferred name is one thing. A name that I flat out HAVE NEVER USED socially is not.
and some unpronounceable multisyllabic name that is a combination of any of the names I mentioned.
Okay. How about one that ISN'T? How about "Jerkweed"? Would you let them call you that for a car?
If you're willing to whore yourself out for that, great. All I'm asking for is a little respect in return. Why is that so unreasonable?
so in the end, you cater to them.
More horsecrap. Without contestants, they have no show. This is VERY MUCH a two-way transaction. I agree to be a contestant and give them the performance they want that makes for good TV, and in return, maybe I get a car, maybe I get a gumball machine, maybe I get a box of Rice-A-Roni. Sounds like I'm the one making all of the promises without getting any in return.
Sure they do it because it's simpler for them. It lessens the chance of that idiot fratboy (no, not all fratboys are idiots, but TPiR sure seems to get a lot of dumb ones) filling out the form wrong, and it lessens the chance of whoever they have handling the data entry that eventually gets submitted to the Gub'ment of screwing up something and having to untangle the mess later. And they have decided that simplifying the process is worth having to alienate (admittedly, a minority, but one I happen to be a part of) fans by telling them to screw if they don't like what they decide to call them. They're probably right, from a financial bottom-line standpoint, but just the same I have the right to think that's disrespectful and say so.

If you're telling this to Stan and Scott out in line, you'll get a strange look and then they'll go backstage and laugh with everyone else about the asshat who didn't want to be on the show because of his name -- assuming you were memorable enough in your rant.
Rant? No. They would simply be told, politely, that if they could not provide me the courtesy of calling me by the name I wish to be called, then I did not wish to be a contestant. I'm not looking to make a scene. I simply wish to be respected as a person, the same way I would respect them. Golden Rule and all that.
Would everyone laugh? Yeah, except for Tom the junior staffer whose parents decided to give him the first name of "Egbert" because it's been in their family for a jillion years. He's not laughing. Well, maybe he is, for reasons of career advancement, but not on the inside.
another reason for the use of the legal first name is to prevent contestants from using less-than-savory nicknames. "Well, you let 'Chris' use his nickname.
Aha. Nickname. Again, a completely different kettle of fish. It's not a nickname, it is my given legal middle name. I can produce ID that proves this. My friggin' Social Security card has a "C" between the "Jon" and the "Lemon". I have ATM and credit cards made out to "Chris Lemon". It's totally verifiable.
the staff doesn't have time to take calls every 10 minutes from a page asking if it's okay if Richard Hertz or Michael Hunt go by their nicknames.
And I'm saying that you MAKE time to be considerate to people. There's a big difference between "My buddies call me "Giganto" because I'm big in the lap", and "I go by my middle name. See? Right here on my ID. Thanks."
-
Some might argue the only whoring done around here is by you, but be that as it may, take a ritalin and calm down. But, lemme play Lemon's advocate here, what is your first name anyway? Is it something so abnormal that it would cause us to laugh hysterically at you? Is it something worthy of The Name's the Same treatment?
Robert Q: Let's welcome our next guest with an (in)famous name...and now let's show you his (in)famous name...
Audience: Who is DICK LEMON?!?
I mean, Chris I understand your points; don't think that I don't. But, as much as you would like to be called Chris and I would like to be called Jim, realize that my chances of hosting CBS Price when Bob passes on to the land of Poppycock are better than a 33 season old institution accomodating nicknames or preferable names be it legal or not to make you or I or the homeless person outside the Chinese Theater in Hollywood happy.
Hey, maybe not a hosting gig, maybe not announcing gig there for me either, but just gimme a few years and maybe...just maybe...I can be good enough to be a page : )

Huh?
But, lemme play Lemon's advocate here, what is your first name anyway?
My full birth name is Jon Christopher Lemon. Why is that relevant? My parents have called me Chris since the day I was born. It is the name I recognize, identify with, and answer to.

Chris--that enraged rant is the greatest impression of "Nixon before the Saturday Night Massacre" I've ever seen! You were even able to capture his desperation!

I love breaking things down for the wannabe smart types.
I asked about your name because if it was a name that was one that was really odd I can understand your gripe all the better. Jon's a fine name, but if you have a problem with it, so be it. It's America, you have the right to not like it. You also have the right to go on Maury and find out if you're the father of an illegitmate child too in America, but that's completely off topic.
I understand your gripes, but Jon...errr Chris, they ain't-achanging. They won't for you or anyone. Don't go on the show, by the way you act with some comments, it could be all the better for the contestant pool. Besides, Bob's already one ego too many for Studio 33 some might say.
Let's move on from this fast before Chris has an ulcer. I know some of the folks here have been to both runs in Atlantic City. Any real big differences between last year and this year aside from the change to a different showroom?

Don't get me wrong - I think that you should be allowed to be called Chris on the show. (I, however, will personally be calling you "Giganto" from now on, if that's okay.) But what rules do you suggest that would allow that to happen without requiring judgment calls from the pages as to what is and isn't acceptable?
For what it's worth, virtually every other game and reality show out there allows contestants to go by reasonable alternate names, because the contestants are pre-booked and someone on the production staff, rather than a network page, has the time to make the call as to whether each name is acceptable.
Don't worry - there's probably some poor kid out there named Jon Cleveland Steemer who is in the exact same predicament as you. ;)

Children, once again, I offer a fine example of "irony".

Which means, unsurprisingly, that you have completely missed my point. It's not about whether my first name is Jon, Ralph, or Buttmunch. It's a basic human courtesy that the TPiR people are shoving by the wayside in order to make their business a little easier, and I find that regrettable.
They won't for you or anyone.
Well, they certainly won't if everyone just sits quietly like sheep and don't fight for what they believe in, that's for certain. They probably won't anyhow, but at least I can look in the mirror and know I did my part.

But what rules do you suggest that would allow that to happen without requiring judgment calls from the pages as to what is and isn't acceptable?
Didn't I say? If I can produce legal ID with the name in question on it, it flies. I don't see why that is difficult. It's what happens every time I buy something with my credit card and the cashier asks to see my ID.
For what it's worth, virtually every other game and reality show out there allows contestants to go by reasonable alternate names,
Good for them. I'm glad they are still willing to extend the common (if infrequently requested) courtesy. I'm saddened that TPiR feels they need to streamline their system to the point where they are not.

Yih, Ime uh dume, Kriss...boi tat wuz uh funi.
Yes, I make gaffes in spelling and sometimes I make errors in posts, be them grammatical or conceptual. But no one is immune from the trials and tribulations of life. Not me, not the other posters, not the moderators, and not you, okay? Okay.
The common courtesy aspect is what you wanna get to...okay. Well, they have the common courtesy to laugh at you and call you an assclown, Jonny, for being called by your middle name in lieu of your first name. Chris, I don't have the gripe with you...we actually are very similar in sarcastic and metaphoric natures in my opinion. But, sometimes you fight a cause that most people shrug their shoulders about.
In other words, of the people who have a gripe with it you're the minority of the minority. I'm willing to bet a lot of folks don't care about the name they get stuck on their tag, for better or for worse. So, thus you're in the minority. But, Chris, you're one of the few who would challenge the point and make it known you don't accept it, thus making you the minority of the minority. Because, while you champion a good cause, most others would just plain walk over to see Craig Ferguson.
Bottom Line, so you can editorialize: YOU'RE MAKING TOO MUCH OF IT!
BTW, on a lighter note, be glad you have a solid middle name like Christopher. Could be worse. Could be stuck with mine, Riley.
Hey here's a concept...let's get back to the better things about the show and the live show in general. Someone please get us off this tangent.

You are doing SUCH a good job of proving my point.
(And I tell you what. You can keep calling me "Jonny", and I'll keep calling you "assclown" until your memory improves. How's that?)
I'm willing to bet a lot of folks don't care about the name they get stuck on their tag, for better or for worse.
I'm willing to bet you're wrong. Maybe they don't care enough to say something about it, but they care.
So, thus you're in the minority. But, Chris, you're one of the few who would challenge the point and make it known you don't accept it, thus making you the minority of the minority.
And I couldn't be prouder to be here, based on the stupidity I see surrounding me every single day. Between being a mindless sheep and attempting to improve the world around me however I can, I'll take the latter every day and twice on Sunday.
Bottom Line, so you can editorialize: YOU'RE MAKING TOO MUCH OF IT!
Did you suddenly move from the position of utter ignorance you were posting from an hour ago to an informed one? Didn't think so.

For the use of sarcasm, yes I would dredge that crap up.
For the third and last time, let's get this to something of more value about the live show than to something I started unintentionally and something Chris has blown into outer space with, eh? Let's act like adults here, or at least attempt to.
From my visit to the show I have to say I was really impressed just how close they got to replications of everything from the doors to the lights behind the turntable to the games. I mean I had heard that it was faithful and seen some pictures of it, but to be there gives you a true appreciation of the efforts to replicate the feel and scheme that is the real show. The only real difference I noted was a different color and style eggcrate in use in lieu of vein style readouts.
I hope to make it out there once more before it closes up shop...prolly on a weekend in October or something.

Actually, I made an offhand comment and people jumped down MY throat about it. So I've defended my position. But, as I've said before, why deprive anyone of a perfectly good witchhunt, right?
-
I merely meant that I started it by saying as a nothing matter, the James/Jim thingy, but hey if you wanna take claim for starting it, then be the guest on my show's panel then...I'm taking the high road for once...you wanna argue more, well I have e-mail addresses you can find fairly easily.
-
If it's any consolation, Chris, If I had to be Jon Lemon on TV, but wound up winning the whole $80,000 enchilada on Golden Road, $11,000 on the Big Wheel ($1M on Primetime), and a $70,000 Double Showcase Win for a total of well over $160,000 ($1.2M if it was a Primetime Special) , then maybe it wouldn't be so bad since my so-called long-lost distant relatives would be looking for Jon Lemon instead of Chris.

Not on this board you won't, particularly if your sarcasm doesn't even make sense.

It bears mentioning that the last person who made it clear to us that he didn't care about accuracy is no longer permitted to post here. That aside, if you don't care about what words actually mean, you're going to find that in turn, fewer and fewer people will care about what you have to say.
-
Believe it or not, some people who read my ramblings actually understand the points I make. Then, there are those like Chris who read them, repost instantly, and say huh without letting it swirl around the brain. To each his own.
To Mr. Zinkin, yeah I understand what words mean, but as bad as it sounds the area I grew up was one in which saying things that are derogatory was somewhat...I don't know...the norm. Which sort of explains why my area was ranked as the second worst are in America to live a few years ago (Millville-Vineland-Bridgeton, NJ specifically if you want to look it up). Sometimes old habits and bad jokes are hard to break.
Can we let this end, please? I mean I wanted to segway on multiple occasions because it gets sort of ridiculous having two 20+ year olds trading blows like little kids. A little growing up on both ends could do some good.

So there's a whole townful of people who babble on incoherently? Well, that explains why you think you have a broadcast career in your future.

Didn't learn from the last time you made yourself look like a boob, I see.

So now you're saying that making derogatory remarks and making sense are mutually exclusive.
Jim, you're not doing yourself any favors... but then, I'm not doing anyone here any favors if I let this thread continue. So I won't.
