Title: Roger Price
Post by: Jimmy Owen on July 11, 2005, 04:06:04 PM
Was at the local Meijer dept. store and I saw a couple of new "Mad Libs" books by TNTS's Roger Price and Leonard Stern.  One based on the new movie "Madagascar" and another tied to "American Idol."  I think it's great that Rog can keep churning out the books fifteen years after his death.

He is truly the L. Ron Hubbard of lame party games. :)

You should see how long the Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller orchestras have been touring!

It's a little like the ad selling the George Washington sword. Of course, the handle has worn out and been replaced a time or two, and they've put a new blade on it. But it still occupies the same space.

I wish I knew where I could write Leonard Stern.

I remember as a kid loving the Price/Stern/Sloan books, though I was never a big fan  of Mad Libs itself.  I used to make up my own Droodles, which I naturally thought at the time were the funniest things ever.  At the time, I had no idea that by that point, Price had been doing them for a long, long time.

A good Droodle _is_ funny.

My take on Price is that he almost always thought his Droodles were a whole lot funnier than they actually were.

Frankly, if one needs to haul out a tablet and magic marker to be funny on a panel show, he should probably find another medium.

On the other hand, does anyone remember Orson Bean drawing on his vote cards on '70s TTTT? Now THAT was funny. At least when I was five years old.

I had always wondered if the Roger Price behind Mad Libs was the same Roger Price who gave us You Can't Do That on Television.  Last night I found out on Wikipedia that they are two different men, and the latter is still with us.

ObGS: You Can't did a few game show spoofs.  My favorite was "Money for Marks".

Yes. He was truly a man who believed his own press.
