Title: Tons of TPiR clips
Post by: Casey Buck on June 30, 2005, 02:16:44 AM
Most of you are aware of j-shea.com (http://\"http://www.j-shea.com\"), which has audio examples of TPiR cues used during the Dennis James nighttime show, and also has backstage pictures taken from Television City.

Now, there's a video clip section that has a treasure trove of TPiR moments. Every single one of them are from the original CBS broadcasts, and they are in pristine quality!

Here it is: http://70.84.119.226/~evemag/media_tpir/priceclips.htm (http://\"http://70.84.119.226/~evemag/media_tpir/priceclips.htm\")

OK, I must be the dope of dopes, but I can't get any sound on these. Am I missing something blatantly obvious? Yes, the volume is up on my computer.

I downloaded Quicktime 7 and it plays fine.

Strange thing is the files wouldn't play in Media Player until after Quicktime was installed.

These clips are worth going out of your way to see.

I have volume at last and have viewed many of the clips and enjoyed them. Ah, yes. Opening remarks at the top of the show, contestants not being pushed offstage immediately upon completion of a pricing game and chat sessions with the models. None of that rush, rush, rush. Top notch material! Thanks so much.

There is 1 more clip added today. It's the last one on the page. And after seeing it, possibly the best of the bunch.

Which you are entitled to. I think Mark, in his unique way, was trying to get across that since your words are the only thing you have here for people to use to form an opinion of you, making posts lacking in punctuation and/or capitalization (and, for that matter, sentence structure) is not going to help you form an overly positive reputation.

There's a preview version of Quicktime 7 for Windows that should support H.264 video files.

As much as I love John Palmer (and will never forgive Deborah Norville for coming along and knocking him out of the news anchor spot on Today), there was a little research boo-boo in the Instant Recall segment.
TNPiR did not debut at 3pm on 9/4/1972. Also, one of the shows compared to it was Supermarket Sweepstakes. No stakes on Bill Malone's show. Steaks maybe.

This wonderful page continues to grow, and continues to outdo itself with each update.

The latest update contains clips from Bob's last show with his dark hair, and clips from the first show with his natural white hair. If the person who created the page lurks here, my hat is off to you. You have an awesome page from what I consider the best years of the show.

And coincidentally, this also provides a date for the first appearance of the left-hand TPIR sign behind the audience -- it's not present in the dark hair episode, but it is on the white hair episode.

Although I prefer to think he's not "gone." I feel like his essence will always be with us, even if his soul isn't. Forgive me if that sounds overzealous, but that's what I believe.

I don't think "overzealous" is the word you're looking for -- in that case you'd be demanding that everyone agree with you and leading a prayer session with everyone facing Beverly Boulevard. :-)

Perhaps "overly sentimental" or "somewhat strange."

I've checked out some of the new clips and, being the aspiring announcer I am, was most intrigued with Gene Wood's tenure on Price as interim announcer when Johnny O passed on.  I'll say this...Gene was a great announcer on most everything he did, except Price.  Not to say he was horrible, but it just seems like his style didn't mesh well with the fast paced nature of Price.  Being that I was too young to remember the first tryouts, anyone care to make mention of how the other tryouts aside from Rod and Gene (i.e. Rich Jefferies, Bob Hilton, et al) sounded in your estimations?

I agree with you, and this is the best way I can think of to put it - for the intro's, Johnny and Rod projected enthusiasm...("....and NOW....here is the STAR of the Price is Right"..) while Gene seemed more serious in his intro....

Useless bit of information:

In the 15th Season Premiere clip, Goodson calls Rod, "Ron".

The CBS.com article on choosing Rich Fields mistakenly referred to him as "Ron"

There also was a website that had audio only of the late 1985 announcer tryouts, but it's outdated.

While watching a Nov. '91 CBS episode of FF (TPIR vs. Y&R), Gene Wood had the bizzare duty to tell Bob Barker and Rod Roddy to "Come Ooonnn DOWN!".  Before watching the clip, I was expecting Gene to sound more like what he did on the TPIR vs. Y&R episode of Feud. ((on par) :))  Gene Wood did NOT have the same enthusiasum as an actual TPIR announcer.

"Disco Inferno" was one of the songs on his warm-up tape produced by the CBS crew. It was a wonderfully programmed tape that built in pace and volume with each song until John made his enthusiastic entrance. He was the master!
