Title: Big Bucks: The PYL Scandal Question
Post by: curtking on June 11, 2005, 06:13:20 PM
GSN's showing the Big Bucks documentary tonight...from 9PM CDT to 10PM CDT.

Wasn't this originally a two-hour show?  Or is my memory failing me?

Thanks,
Curt

Did part of it possibly include the two episodes in their entirety the last time? That possibly might be why...

I think it is probably a scheduling error.  Hopefully it will air in its entirety and not cut off after an hour.  If you're going to record it, I would record 1 hour before and 1 hour after it is scheduled.

I would even go as far as to guess they probably do want it to run entirely in primetime from 9-11 eastern / pacific rather than from 10-12 and only have 1 hour in primetime.

Apparently GSN has put together a condensed version of the special (read: no actual episodes), and it looks like it will come in at about 1 hour. It does have some extra footage of the documentary portion, however.

I did not see this "overly edited" version. Was there any part of the actual documentary cut out as well? Or was it just the two episodes? Were there fewer commercials as well?

No. They ran the same number of commercials, so there was only about twenty minutes of content.

Does anyone know WHY on earth GSN would do this?  It's not like they had a lot of great programming to air instead of the extra hour!   The weakest link after was lame.  And even the Family Feud was something I could live without in order to see Big Bucks in its entire format.  Bad move on GSN's part.

Not hardly.

If they can bust a two hour show down to an hour, it's much easier to find places for it on the schedule in the future. So by doing this they're actually insuring they can air it MORE OFTEN.

Bravo does something similar...they've taken the older episodes of Queer Eye and busted them down to a half-hour so they can air them after other half-hour shows.

Again I ask why GSN would have trouble finding places to schedule it?  The whole station is completely devoid of new programming except for possibly a couple hours a week in primetime.  Would FF or WL (before and after) really get better numbers than an extra hour of Big Bucks might get?

I guess now that TAR will be on from 9-10 every night, it ruins any 2 hour block for primetime.  Could this be the first of many casualties from buying TAR?

Actually I'd say it's more of a testament of how the show still pulls a decent audience if GSN would even bother to air a condensed version, minus the actual episodes. It also could've been a test for that new "Anything To Win" series that's gonna premiere later this year. But I digress......

Oh?  Who were the players?  What was the final pot?  Perhaps GSN figured those who watched Big Bucks would stick around, and they'd get some spillover ratings for TWL.  Which they could use.

Only in your judgment.  If you don't like it, write a letter to whoever is in charge of the network these days.  But "I'd rather see hour two than Feud/whatever" sounds like so much of whining, along with the credit rolls, lack of B/E shows, and so on.  Be glad there's a GSN at all.
Again I ask why GSN would have trouble finding places to schedule it?
We have established that the squeezing back to an hour was a deliberate move on the part of GSN.  There is no trouble finding a spot for it.  Chris Lemon already made any points I would make here, so I'll press on.

And?   I would love to have Tic Tac Dough, Go! and TPIR back, but they're not.  So I enjoy Lingo, Russian Roulette and Extreme Dodgeball because they're there.  This isn't really an arguing point, as such.

I don't know, but I know the guy who DOES know that.  Hey, Alex!  Get in here! :)

OK, you have completely no basis to make claims like this.  I applaud them for making an acquisition, even though it could be done and aired in 100 days, then shunted off to Rerun Hell.  Good for them, though.  It beats Greed: Cycle 8, and another Wednesday night of Dog Eat Dog.  (oof.)

Give 'em a chance, if you're not already completely biased.

I heard my name!  Big Bucks has had some consiterable drop off since it's first airing of 1.1.  It's clocked in as low as .3-.4.  Family Feud gets above a .4.  Weakest Link gets in the .3 range generally.  So really, it was really not that much of a difference.  Reason for the heavy drop off is because of the lack of publicity for it airing, but also because if the ratings were 1.1 when it first aired, you have to assume a good deal of them are not game show nutcases (no offense intended) like the vehement Big Bucks Scandal bitchers are, so it's going to drop off.  And if anything, I agree with what tyshaun said; it's a trial to see how the hour format will fit with Anything To Win.

Not to throw this thread too far off topic, but is there a "big" ratings difference between Dawson & Combs Feud?

I probably should have asked that before.  I asked about Family Feud, and they said a .4.  I don't know which it is.

Question, Alex: Are these GSN universe ratings, or general Nielsen ratings? Considering everywhere I've read, BB:TPYLS pulled a 1.5 on its premiere, with a 1.8 during its second hour.

The 1.1 was given from the professor, the rest are from GSN.  I got the ratings specifically for the others from GSN.
