Title: Card Sharks...80s version...
Post by: Dbacksfan12 on April 22, 2005, 02:39:50 PM
In watching Card Sharks this week on GSN....I think they have some rather flimsy payouts...such as the "winners" in the audience...who I noted got to split $100 when the contestant picked the right answer. (A whopping $10.00! Go down the street to McDonald's, buy a Big Mac and fries, and you might have a buck left!)
I didn't catch much of it--did they receive further compensation for their time?

That was something I was wondering about.......Did it always work that the 10 audience members split cash if the contestant got the question exactly right? I never heard any mention of it until yesterday's show.

They received the opportunity to be featured on TV at a taping they were at anyhow.

Really?  I thought they custom picked these groups...and invited them to the show.  In the book "Come on Down!", a picture of the CS production offices are shown, with a bulletin board of sorts on the wall that reads: "Looking for people in the following groups..."

The bulletin board perhaps referred to polling groups. 100 Congressmen, 100 single women with 2 or more kids, etc. Those take some work to find. I know early on that the 10 groups were from the audience, and later with some of the more niche groups, needed some work to find.

Bob mentioned it a few times too that the 10 from the audience split the $100 bonus.

I was going back through some old tapes recently, and caught a plug that GSN left in from a late (December?) 1987 episode of Eubanks CS, done by Lacey,  where they were specifically looking for....I think they were asking for something along the lines "newlywed senior citizens"...

They got $10 for each one, so that could be a few bucks of easy money, since they stuck around the whole week.  Didn't one 'representative' of the group of 10 win a parting gift as well?  Most of the people who were polled never got anything, so I'd be jazzed to show up at a game show, and leave with $20 or $30.

Seemed to me that the person from the in-studio polling group got a trade-out level prize, so it was something like a TV set or a washer-dryer and not Rice-a-Roni or Lee Press-On Nails.

And they got on camera and got to meet Bob Eubanks (if that floats your boat), Stacey and Susannah, so it wasn't a total wash.

I don't think any "Tattletales" audience member would complain about leaving the studio with $20-25 at the most after seeing two or three shows.

("CS" would occasionally give out prizes to regular polling groups--I'm assuming usually TVs or stereos to schools when they went in to interview kids.)

Was there something awarded to the audience poll groups if someone got the number exactly right during that Car bonus format?
