Title: Tic Tac Dough
Post by: BrandonFG on April 17, 2005, 01:21:29 PM
I just caught the TTD clip of Thom McKee winning $36,000+ in the 4th tie game, and came to wondering something. Just how DID the pot get to be that high? (yeah, pot and high hahahahaha) Never really seen a lot of TTD, so I'm not quite sure on how the payouts were for boxes...I just know the center box was significantly higher, but I still can't do the math as to how the pot got to almost $37,000. Thanks in advance.

BTW, "Peter Pan?" How simple can we be? I knew that in 4th grade!

I believe there was a red category (shut up Jim Caldwell :-P) that doubled the pot if answered correctly, I think it was the Bonus Category if I'm not mistaken.

That is an exciting episode, I did tape it back on 7/4/1998 during a GSN marathon "Tic Tac and Thom".

Close -- "Secret Category".

IIRC, the pot went up to about $40,000 and Mark Leinwand won it.

I see...for some reason, I thought the red boxes were Caldwell era only, hence all the jokes, but now it's coming back to me...damn alcohol. :-P

Thanks to both.

If only he wasn't mentioning Thom McKee specifically, you'd be right. Hehe.

That game he's referring to set the record at that time, but I believe you're referencing when it was later broken again.

They weren't, they had the red boxes in the Martindale era, but at the time the Secret Category wasn't red, I don't think. Just special.

No, the "special" categories were always red in the syndie run.  Wink just wasn't fixated on the color. :-)

When they had "Seesaw", and "Play or Pass" and all of the other goofy ones, yes. But I am almost certain that there was a period of time before that when they were trying out stuff like the Secret Category where it was the same blue everything else was. I could be wrong, but I'm feeling pretty strongly about this. If someone wants to provide a screengrab of the McKee run showing me a red box, I'll happily eat my words.

I'm told that  "Secret Category" was the first one they had; but I seem to recall when it first appeared, it was blue....and then was made red to make it "stand out".  However, Adam Marchese (http://\"http://web.archive.org/web/19990129022046/www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/Studio/3495/index.html\") (remember him?) states on his page that they were burnt orange from the get-go.

I don't remember for sure if Secret Category was red or blue to start -- my vote would be for red, but I won't swear to it -- but I do remember a Secret Category-driven pot that got up to $45,200 -- I forget if it was during McKee's run or not.  Dropped my jaw, it did...

Did the Secret Categ'Ry ever appear in any tiebreaker games? I guess they finally realized by 1982 or so how high the pots could get if the SC appeared in a third of fourth games and dropped the Categ'Ry.
