Title: Paging Cell Phone Users...
Post by: TimK2003 on March 30, 2005, 06:47:46 PM
I just got my cell phone plan renewed/upgraded today thru Alltel and got a new Motorola cell phone.

Anyhow, I went to the list of cell phone games that I could download and wow, times have changed as far as available games go.  Then again, going from an old monochrome dot-matrix display to a full-color LCD screen helps broaden possibilities as well.

Anyhoo, some of the possible games that I can download are:

The Price Is Right -- Cliffhangers
Wheel Of Fortune 2005
Wheel Of Fortune -- Play For Prizes
Hollywood Squares
Family Feud

Most games cost about $3-5 a month to play on your cell phone.

As much as I'd like to own them all, I only want to get one or maybe 2 of these.

Has any fellow cellular users played any of these game show cellular versions?  If so, what are the best ones and which ones aren't worth the monthly cost?

Any advice will be well appreciated.

Cliffhangers was entertaining for about twelve seconds. I also cannot speak all that highly of Joker's Wild, although at least with that the fee is one-time-only.

I'm still of the opinion that cellphone gaming isn't quite ready for prime time yet, but something like WOF would prolly work well.

Family Feud wasn't worth a hoot. The interface was confusing....etc...etc.

If anyone has Satan, I mean, Sprint PCS, there's a new J! game that can be downloaded. It's OK, but for each round, you only get three categories, and three dollar values to choose from. The questions (answers?) are multiple-choice, and of course there's the Daily Double and Final J!

Out of 10, I give it a 7. It's obvious you can't fit all 6 categories or all 5 dollar values on a cell phone screen, but it still feels lacking, even if it can't be helped.

For those who can get either the regular "Wheel Of Fortune" game and/or the "Wheel Of Fortune for Prizes" on their cell phones, I would highly recommend it.

I have had the WoFFP on my phone for about 6 weeks, and the game is definitely challenging! There are opportunities to win gift cards up to $40 in daily tournaments.  I have already won a $20 Subway card, and a $10 Best Buy card for being in the Top 3 (top 4 for weekend games). Currently you can win once every 7 days.  Definitely worth the $3.99/month.

Once you get good on 'spinning' the wheel, you can aim your spins within a wedge or two.  And if you know the strategy on saving multiple letters for higher point amounts, how to build up and win the Jackpot round, and how to hit the 40,000 wedge in the bonus round, then you have a very good chance to make the top 3.  If you can exceed 58,000 points in a game you could very well be in the top 10 -- 62,000 for the top 3!

They mention weekly & monthly tourneys as well, but I have yet to see any.  Anyhoo, you get 3 full games per day to play for tournament play, and maybe 25 practice games for whenever, although I have yet to see new practice games uploaded for the new month.

Anyone else have the game on their cell?  Opinions?

The Price is Right - Cliffhangers
This game is some fun on the short term, but not much for replay value. Still, it stays pretty true to the show. When I first got it, it would say 'TPiR - Plinko Coming Soon!', but it's gone now, so I don't think that's in the works. Overall, I give it a 5/5
Hollywood Squares
This game actually has some pretty hard trivia. Multiple choice questions, but some of them are just downright wrong. Never good to have incorrect questions in a game show game. Multiple choice, here, all the way. However, this is one of very few cell phone games that has a 2 player option. Plenty of categorical question packs to try out. This one's a 7/10.
The Joker's Wild
Again, some tricky questions, some of which just seem to have a British flavor for sosme reason. Downloadable question packs available again. Multiple choice for the questions. Not bad, but gets old after awhile. 6/10
Family Feud
Not much fun at all. They tried to turn it into one of those online competitive trivia games (similar to what you find in a bar). Multiple choices on all questions just take it way too far from the actual Feud format. Tried it, deleted it. 2/10
Wheel of Fortune
Great adaptation of the show. Single player format that is actually similar to the old WoF coin-op (to the three of you who ever played it). You can aim the wheel to some degree, and there are plenty of puzzles. The only downside is that it sometimes glitches up in my phone (The only one of these games to do this). Still, it's loads of fun 8/10

I would suggest WoF, HS, and maybe TJW, if you're a big fan of the show. Hey, I had to try em all out. Yet to try J!, though. Supposedly there's a Name That Tune either coming or out there. Hope my insights help you out.

Actually, if you go to www.wheeloffortune.com/mobile , you can get a listing of all of the available games.  However, just like the local cable companies, the cellular companies pick and choose what games the'll add to their 'lineup'.

What's nice about the above website, when you go to any of the mobile game websites, they will list what cell phone providers carry that game.

You Might Be A Game Show Nut.... ...If you choose a cell phone provider solely on how many game show games they offer for upload.

Family Feud has been having some problem with the ratings. I emailed support, and they said the rankings are crashing the network(no doubt, over 100,000 players with God know how many aliases, more like 400k+ names). They are going to be down until they fix the problem.

Joker's Wild seems ok, but I have downloaded the packs, but still get repeat questions.

Verizon says they have discontinued Joker's Wild. No wonder, there weren't any new game packs released for months. I am going to hit them up for a credit(good luck) since I paid 6.25 for a dead a$$ game that is discontinued

CARD SHARKS has been added to the mix, but only limited questions at this time. I sent "telescope" (telescope.tv) an email about this, and awating a reply.

GOOD NEWS :  Telescope has at the bottom of the Card Sharks page...coming soon....

MATCH GAME AND PASSWORD!!!  Now, these sound like some good game for the cell phone without a doubt. Hopefully, they'll be multiplayer over the cell phone network(kinda like Feud is with the leaderboard scores).

I'm just not sure what makes you think these will be remotely good, much less good "without a doubt", considering the limitations of cellphone games. If you think you're actually going to give clues to and get answers from other humans, I am afraid you are going to be severely disappointed.

With each cellphone game I play, I am more and more convinced that the technology isn't ready for what the game makers want to do with it. A cellphone can play Tetris okay, and a lot of people seem to be happy with that, but most games out there don't seem to cut it.

I would venture to predict that MG will probably be 1 player vs. computer or 1 vs. 1(party, hand off to your buddy type game, etc.). Maybe the password will have you giving from one cell player to another cell player. I haven't seen WOF 2005(other than screenshots), it is not been rolled out for my phone model yet, but they said it will be soon.

I have to agree on the earlier comment about jeopardy, when I still have Sprint(cough cough), the 3 by 3 board kinda threw me. But it was ok, nothing to ride home about.

It is now official: you are going to be highly disappointed. MG is gonna be about as close to the TV show as Joker's Wild was. Ditto Password.

Is it just me, or does it seem like Sony seems to be having a little more success with their shows than Freemantle is. FM seems to be going for the multiplayer style, which isn't generally translating well at all...
I wouldn't be surprised if atleast one of these two is a multiplayer.

Sony's original cash cow, "Wheel Of Fortune", is hands down the simplest of all the cellular game-shows out there.  You spin the wheel, you pick a letter, you guess the puzzle (I haven't seen nor played cellular J!).

As far as the FM games go, there really isn't anything as simple as Wheel that can be played on a cell phone.  The only 2 games that I think could work is the Card Sharks Money Cards game and perhaps the (Super) Password (Plus) puzzleboard game.

If you were to make the Card Sharks into a daily "play for prizes" format, like Wheel, you could have each player have 5 shots at the cards per day, and base the scores on the average scores of the 5 games plus a bonus related to how quickly the games are played.

For Password, show one clue at a time, and let the player enter an answer.  Assign points based on what clue of the 5 they get the correct answer on plus the bonus based on how quickly the games were played.  Again, tournament scores would be based on the average score of the 5 rounds.

(If you are confused on the scoring system, it is pretty much the same system on the Cellular Wheel game, which is a pretty fair way of rating players).

Which would, actually, make an EXCEPTIONAL phone game, if you ask me. 'Cept a global high-score list would be blown out of the water in a hurry, as people doubled all the way up. Kinda how people hacked the high score list on FlashGames Scrabble...
