Title: Best and worst sketch comedy parodies...
Post by: Kevin Prather on March 01, 2005, 09:01:13 PM
What do you think were the best and worst sketch comedy satires of a game show that you remember?

My opinion:
BEST: (Besides the Celeb Jeopardies, which are givens...) Perhaps MadTV's take on Millionaire. The actor playing Regis didn't really have the right voice, but he had the body gestures down cold.

WORST: MadTV's take on Ken Jennings. The actors playing KenJen and Alex were so off, it wasn't even funny.

Discuss and cuss.

I'm not sure what the worst would be, but my favorite goes way back.

It was when Steve Martin played "Art F-114", host of Jeopardy! 1999 on a 1976 episode of Saturday Night Live.  Back then, no one thought Jeopardy! would be back, much less be on in 1999, nor would Don Pardo still be working on SNL.

That actor was an actress--Alex Borstein, the same Alex Borstein who co-hosted the first season of Celebrity Blackjack.

And I agree with a previous poster--Jeopardy! 1999 was the best ever.

Best: Celebrity Jeopardy, Vague, Trick Questions (not sure of the title, but it was first season Mad TV)

Worst: Old French Whore, Grand Theft Auto (Mad TV)

My All-Time Favorite:  Jackie Rogers Jr. $100,000 Jackpot Wad!

"Now, you all know the rules. They're very much like "Pyramid", but different."

Transcript (http://\"http://snltranscripts.jt.org/84/84pjackpotwad.phtml\") of the sketch.  I've only seen it once, but it has permanently etched itself into my brain.

Jacky Rogers Jr's $100,000 Jackpot Wad comes immediately to mind, as does Community College Bowl.

I can't think of one for "worst" right now; it's been several years since I've watched SNL or Mad TV.

One of my favorite "SNL" bits of all time isn't a game show parody per se, but I think it should count in this thread:  Tom Hanks as "Mr. Short-Term Memory" appearing on a game show with celebrity partner Tony Randall.

And for no good reason, I really enjoyed "Wedgie Fever!"  I can still make myself laugh by imitating Jon-Lovitz-with-a-wedgie saying "O-klahoma City!"

I can't remember the name of the GS, I think it was on the Jamie Kennedy show (midnight EST on ABC Family, maybe a couple months ago). It had 3 contestants, one was not informed of the rules until the game started, and they were REALLY complicated. Maybe someone remembers what I'm talking about.

Celebrity Jeopardy on SNL....... ah, the classics. Here at college some of the outtakes are quoted even amongst those that hate game shows. It was absolutely hilarious, and is still traded around.

I haven't seen enough to make a clear judgement, but one of the ones I hated was the Bensonhurst Dating Game (with Joe Pesci playing the host).

I believe that one's on SNL's best game show parodies tape. They pop up from time to time on ebay.

I still have never seen the MADtv Family Feud sketch. From the clip they showed on the E! THS it looked hilarious. Is it online anywhere?

What about East Hollywood Squares on MADtv with Peter Marshall? I thought that was pretty good.

It was in fact. It aired on 12/07/06 and included Darryl Hammond as Sean Connery (before he'd developed the Evil Connery act), Norm McDonald as Burt Reynolds, and Martin Short as Jerry Lewis.

The categories: Celebrities, Potpourri, Popular Music, Movies, Potent Potables, U.S. History, and the infamous "S" Words. :)

Try madtv.com. They have clips from time to time. There's actually two or three Feud sketches...one of them has the Sopranos playing, then there's just a general episode making fun of Louie Anderson (you're right, it was hilarious), then there was one last year with Lord of the Rings.

BTW, East Hollywood Squares was In Living Color, and speaking of which, those, and the "Dirty Dozens" sketches should also be added to my list, right along with the MadTV Feuds.

Chris, which one am I missing?  I only have 11:

12/7/96, 5/10/97, 10/4/97, 5/9/98, 10/24/98, 3/20/99, 10/23/99, 4/15/00, 12/16/00, 9/29/01, 5/18/02

There's a gap in spring 2000.  Is that it, or is there something more sinister afoot?

May I hasten to add....

Several Monty Python classics, including "Blackmail," "What do you (cuckoo)," a new radio quiz game loosely based on all the old radio quiz games, and of course, "World Forum" (our contestant is Karl Marx, and he's playing for this beautiful lounge suite...)

And back to SNL, Bill Murray hosting "Quien es mas Macho?"

Though it may not have been the best sketch ever, I found SNL's one Weskest Link parody amusing.  From 2001:

Anne (Rachel Dratch): "Tamara.. in quantum mechanics, you are an ugly, ugly woman who is going to die alone and unloved."

Tamara: "That wasn’t even a question!"

Anne: "Correct! No question about it."

An obscure summer replacement series called She TV had a little sketch called Brain Dead Concentration. The two contestants kept calling "seven and twenty-three" even though they didn't match.

Saturday Night Live's Best of Game Show Parodies tape contains edited versions of Food, Sex, or Cars, Stand Up and Win, Jackpot Wad, Jeopardy!:1999  among others. I posted a roster about three or four months ago.

I'm all for some of the SNL bits already mentioned--Common Knowledge, Jackie Rogers Jr., and Stand Up and Win ("I'll take 'Gilligan's Island' for $200."  "The answer is: A three-hour tour?!?  A THREE HOUR TOUR!?!"), but I hadn't seen any mention yet of Game Breakers (I think that was what they called it).  The one with Susan Lucci, an on-camera appearance by Don Pardo, and a walk-on by Gene Rayburn.

Also on my list, for no other reason than the pure absurdity of it, was "Name That Dog", with two contestants asked to guess a series of dogs' names...

I love Jackie Rodgers Jr $100,000 Jackpot Wad.  I'll have to dig out my tape of that.  Its one of the best.

One of MadTV's PiR parodies with all sexual inuendo's was great.  "Welcome to contestants row, Anita Long Hairy... " well you get the point.

I also like "Clara Turly's Bible Challenge"  There is just a short clip of it on the SNL special but it has Norm McDonald and 2 church geniuses.  The host (a soft spoken lady) would read a question, then state the answer.  She then asked each contestant if they knew that.  Both the church geniuses said "no" and Norm just rang a bell (he was smoking and eating a Big Mac) and with food in his mouth "Yeah i knew that" and he stays the big winner.

But one good PIR parody was SNL's "Sabra Price is Right" from 1992 with Tom Hanks (it was probably the only TPIR skit SNL has done). It was much funnier than the MadTV one.

While I'm thinking of it, two from Animaniacs:

1. The Warners play "Quiz Me Quick!" but lose the big prize when Wakko deciphers the rebus as "Isaac Netwweight."
(Of course, the three also played Jeopardy in the classroom where Yakko sings all 50 state capitals, but is DQ'd for not answering in the form of a question).

2. Pinky and the Brain get on Gyp-Parody where The Brain sweeps all of the questions ("What is a Regis Philbin?") to earn money for his latest world domination scheme but blows Final Gyp-Parody when he can't remember the catch phrase from Pinky's favorite TV show.

On the subject of this...

I have a vague memory of Michael Keaton hosting SNL and doing a skit which was called "The Price Better Be Right".  Michael hosted and they featured broken items and merchandise returned to the store.  I seem to remember them making the contestants bid on a broken phone.  I also remember an announcer called contestants names out and saying, for example...
"[announcer name] get off your ass and find us another contestant!"
"(Siiiiiiiiiigh) FINE!  Um, DAVID ROMAN you're the next contestant!""
THe camera quickly finds the contestant and they are quickly moving towards the stage.  Then you hear the announcer again
"DAMNIT Hurry up!!!!!!!!!!!"

Slight nitpick:  That was also Wakko, responding to a Daily Double.  Best quote:  "I'll blow the wad!"

I also enjoyed their parody of "You Bet Your Life" (forgot the title) where Yakko announces, "Say the secret word and my brother Wakko will hit you on the head with a mallet!"

Yeah, I was gonna send out ONE in order to help someone fill an incomplete set. I was just waiting for someone to ask for the whole schmiel and prove to me that it was a bad idea.

The character Norm did in "Bible Challenge" was Stan Hooper, who would be the basis of his short-lived Fox comedy "A Minute with Stan Hooper."

But one good PIR parody was SNL's "Sabra Price is Right" from 1992 with Tom Hanks (it was probably the only TPIR skit SNL has done). It was much funnier than the MadTV one.

Quentin Tarentito played one of the experts on "Bible Challenge". And that "Sabra TPIR" bit ...deesko,Deesko!

I remember the East German HS spoof,"Die Squaren Ost Berlin", where half the celebs were didn't appear ("Ziggy has defected") and Billy Joel as a glockenspiel player.

Worst sketch ever?"Where In The World IS San Diego California?"

"I think I'm in a deli...I'm on a roll!"
Mr. Baggy Pants,"Remote Control"

Whoops,meant to say Quentin Tarentino.
I also remember two "Dating Game" spoofs:

a "Sprockets" segment called "Love Werks" in which Jason Priestly play the bachelor who had to choose between a nurse,a Lego factory worker/dominartrix,Susan the she-male,and his mother("MOTHER!!!").Jason ends up choosing Susan and upon meeting says,"He/she is repulsive!"

"Bensonhurst Dating Game" hosted by Joe Pesci in which the bachlorette chooses the black guy (Chris Rock) over two Italians.

SNL's Dysfunctional Family Feud was pretty good...enjoyed Dana Carvey's performance as Ray Combs, and the fact that it used the actual FF music/sound FX were a nice touch, at least from a GS fan perspective.

Chuck Donegan (The Illustrious "Chuckie Baby")

Um...what about that other Family Feud bit from that era -- Baldwins vs. Fitzgeralds -- with Phil Hartman as Ray Combs? Too bad both would die within two years of each other: Combs by suicide in '96, Hartman by his wife in a nasty tiff before she later pulled the trigger on herself in '98. The transcript is here, (http://snltranscripts.jt.org/93/93mfeud.phtml) but the Baldwins provided meaningless Hollywood answers.

Pardon the revival of a long-ago thread, but reading some other recent entries reminded me of something that has recently surfaced that goes WAY back...next time you're knocking around the dollar stores, look for a DVD with a 1950s Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis-hosted Colgate Comedy Hour that contains a sketch called "The 64 Million Dollar Question". Dean as host "Hal April" and Jerry as a dorky Western Union boy who manages to work his way up the jackpot ladder are fun to watch. The show must have been done just after a major flare-up between the two, as a few cracks about their feud pop up. It's a funny sendup of a show that was red hot back then, and time hasn't necessarily dulled the jokes.
