And those aren't exactly nothing names they're getting to play with them, either. Not A-list, by any stretch, but you can do a lot worse than Mr. Blackwell and Greg Proops.

....and this will be the first review of a very fabulous show!

As you guys and dolls may, or may not have read, What's My Line? - Live is back for more fun and games at the ACME Theatre!

This opening show was kind of a special occassion as February 2nd, 2005 marked the 55th anniversary of the premiere of WML? Wow, 55 years...how about that? In addition to it being the show's 55th tribute, there were some throwbacks which I enjoyed. Just like the original show, we had three contestants, and a mystery guest at the end. Also, a lot of the banter really harkens back to the classic shows, as well it should!

The celeb panel on the show were: Lee Meriwether, Patt Morrison, Wil Wheaton, and Carlos Alazraqui. Like Lemon said, those aren't exactly nothing names. As a matter of fact, as you guys may or may not see on GSn's Black and White Overnight block in a few days (I think Friday or Saturday), that Lee Meriwether was a mystery guest on the original show on September, 1954....one day after being crowned Miss America! That's her common thread with the original show. BTW, she still looks great! ;-)
The last half of the show was a real treat and had a nice surprise!

The last contestant of the night was a lady by the name of Jill Kollmar. If that name rings a bell for any of you, that's because she is Dorothy Kilgallen's daughter who also appeared as part of a duo of mystery guests! ("Dorothy's other children") She appeared on the show with her older brother while her mom was on maternity leave for one week in 1954, as well! After they played the game, they talked about old memories of the show, and how Jill would sometimes tease her mom for not getting one of the mystery guests right, or how she would downright tell her mom when she had an off-night! :-p I know some of you will agree with me on this, but it IS a treat to hear some of these stories about the good old days of television, or as Lee called it, "a real golden age of panel shows." By the way, Jill is now an interior decorator, which is not a typical odd-job by WML standards. =)
For those of you wondering, the mystery guest was Ed Begley, Jr. of St. Elsewhere and Six Feet Under fame....among other shows and game show appearances. The connection here? Ed Begler, Sr. was a guest on the syndicated version of WML? How about that?

As for the stage show, itself, everything seemed very well-done, including the live music on piano. J. Keith was a formidable host, and knew how to keep the show running well. He has a few "Daly quirks" that the original host had, including knowing when to call for conferences at, seemingly, the right times. Just like Mr. Daly, Mr. Van Straaten was pretty lenient at times, and would be generous with giving a "Yes" answer at times. In other words, this show is a throwback to the old show, and I recommend it very much. :-)

This is Jason Hernandez saying good night, and it's now time for ME to watch "What's My Line?"!

PS: The show's on La Brea Ave in Los Angeles, CA.... nine-double oh! 3-6! ;-)

So did they work out the rights for this?  It would seem not from the disclaimer on their website, but I'm surprised Fremantle hasn't whapped 'em with a lawyer stick.

So bummed I'll actually be in SoCal for two of those dates and unable to go to the show.

That's the one weird thing in all this for me as well.  Clearly, this project is being done with affection, and its continuing success suggests to me that Fremantle is missing an opportunity by not picking up J. Keith & Co. and dropping them as-is onto a cable channel.  GSN might be too thick-headed to get it, but somebody ought to.

How sad is it that a handful of B-level celebs and comics understand a Fremantle property better than the so-called professionals that run the company?

Matt, how true. I always had fears that, given Fremantle's track record on revivals (for the most part), they always have to change the whole show to something slightly resembling it's former version. If they got their hands on WML?, they probably would introduce bonus stunts, clip chips, and all those other woeful features. But, I don't want to give them ideas. :-)

Back on topic: sounds like these people know what they're doing, they have no place to go but up! :-D

Wait a minute, is WML? a Fremantle property or a Viacom/CBS property? Either way, point well taken.

Speaking of Fremental, I understand they're doing less smirkin' there these days. Wanna buy a Ford?

Ya know, we witness dozens of shows with celebrities dropping their guard and playing Texas Hold Em, and very soon we'll see them playing charades...if this live WML gets more media attention, we could see panel shows return in a big way -- and not through the proper channels. There's enough of the old guard TV panelists left that you could probably stage a pretty good East Coast offshoot of this in some off-Broadway theatre once a week or so. Betsy? Polly? Phyllis? Might be a nice idea for them. Perhaps some willing NYC impresario can pull it off.

Robair commented about an upcoming celebrity charades game, and Zach very rightly wondered what happened to it since it was originally announced for last month.

I'm not sure who declared open season on Zach, but I'm personally getting a lot more tired of that than I am of Zach's off-the-wall but on-topic comments.

Hi All,

J. Keith here, the panel moderator & co-producer of "What's My Line? - Live On Stage".

Just want to say thanks to those who have come to the show and encourage other fans of the original to do the same.  We don't pretend that we're doing the original, but we do try to do a nice homage.

Anyhow, hope to see y'all at the show!

Thanks for coming aboard, J Keith.  As you've seen, several of our members have already visited.  At least one was at your show last night, with Mystery Guest Drew Carey.  Those of us who live far away and aren't visiting until summer really hope this is something that you'll continue doing.

It was definitely a fun one.  Probably the biggest crowd reaction to a Mystery Guest we've had so far.  He didn't do any seersucker joke.  He seems to be doing quite well... very lively and working almost constantly (his episode of The George Lopez Show aired the night before, and he is in the middle of shooting The Dukes of Hazzard movie).  --JKvS

Thanks for the kind words.  The sign-in board gizmo ("technology" is far too kind) was conceived by our director & co-producer Jim Newman and built by the crew at ACME.  The paint was still wet the first time we used it!  It's so simple, but impresses the audience (and me) every time we "clear the board."

YES, Rip Taylor came out with confetti, but not in a bag.  He had some sort of batons that released confetti when he shook them.  We were glad to spend an hour vacuuming after he left.

I'll let someone else describe the sign-in board doohickey.

I guess I'll explain the sign-in board doo-hickey thingy...

remember those pull-cards that they used on classic Jeopardy with Art Fleming?

*nods*

*nods again cool-like*

Well, the contestants/mystery guests would sign in with a big black marker on a huge sheet of white paper; and every time they "clear the board," the card would be pulled away! *GASP!* It's like old-school television magic! Who would've knew?

My guess is he'd prefer the Bennett Cerf reference to the Wesley Crusher one.  No matter, I'm a fan of both.

Though, Keith, would it kill you to track down a NextGen Mystery Guest?  Michael Dorn's phone can't be THAT busy!

BTW, another of Wil Wheaton's sidelines is writing reviews of ancient videogames.  We're talking Atari 2600 cartridges here.  His work appears in the published version of The Onion (and possibly elsewhere) and is a wonderfully retro kick. (Much like the WML? show, I dare say!)

i should emphasize the Mystery Guest only has a very kinda-sorta-maybe-in-a-way-pretty-flimsy connection to the original panelist.  either way, it's a swell guest.  i just wanna make sure i don't get shot when it's not Bennett Cerf's DNA clone walking out on stage.

play nice,

J. Keith, any possible way you can bring the show to NY for a wknd? When do us poor, working-class East Coasters get to see what looks like a great show? :-)

Here here!  Gimme gimme gimme!

I'd love to take the show on the road (especially to my hometown of Chicago) and would love to have a long run in WML's hometown of New York.  Right now though, we're still getting our bearings and looks like we'll be in LA.

You never know, though!    If any of you are/know bigtime producers in those cities, tell 'em to contact me...

Enjoy the show,

I went to see the show tonight, and it was charming.  There's no way anyone can question J. Keith's love of the original television format, and you can definitely see a little of the magic that makes the format the classic it is.

However, I felt there were several things lacking that kept this from being a truly good show, most of it having to do with adapting the show for a 99-seat theater with the types of panelists that you can get to come to a 99-seat theater.  Out of deference to J. Keith, since he's a member of the board, I won't presume to try to fix his show for him in public.

But overall, the set was classy, the live commercial (for a real sponsor!) was a hoot, and  Adam Chester, his live musician, is always entertaining.

And for what it's worth, the sign-in board "technology" is exactly the same as the '70's series, just with black marker and white butcher paper instead of chalk and blue butcher paper.  You just rarely see the stagehands pull up the written-on sheets on camera on the TV show.

J. Keith does a masterful job of guiding the panel along. Wil Wheaton takes the game seriously and plays to win, yet he is but one of four panelists. The other three have a way to go before they enter the league of D.K., B.C. and A.F.

Quote
Out of deference to J. Keith, since he's a member of the board, I won't presume to try to fix his show for him in public.
I have nutz o' steel so I will. To J. Keith: these are offered in the spirit of constructive criticism:

- At the beginning of each game the panel needs to be given a more explicit hint. For Wednesday night's show, Game 1 (crime scene investigator): "our guest is salaried and works in a branch of local government." Game 2 (makes Renaissance costumes): "Our guest is self-employed and makes a product." Game 3 (hand bell ringers) "Our guests perform together." Those 10 "no" answers seemed to mount up pretty quickly. This might help things along.

- If you don't already, guests and new panelists need to be thoroughly briefed. If a panelist is stuck for a question they should pass (or you can offer that they pass). Guests are to remain seated when the game is over. That kind of thing.

- Adam's synthesizer needs to be notched down a decibel or three. It overpowers the dialogue.

- The show needs a dancing bottle of Stopette: http://www.old-time.com/commercials/unique_products.html (http://\"http://www.old-time.com/commercials/unique_products.html\"). Yes, I know the show already has a sponsor in Auction Doctors (the cure for your auction headaches at http://www.auctiondoctors.com/) (http://\"http://www.auctiondoctors.com/)\") but even the real WML? had alternate sponsors.

- The swirling question marks are K-E-W-L. They put that chintzy butcher-paper thing to shame. In its defense, the butcher-paper thing does [/b]work by magic. Every time the name disappears it makes music. That there is proof there is magic at work.

- Bruno Kirby's anecdotes were engaging. The bell ringers more than made the evening.

- I think Wil Wheaton has a facial structure which is very similar to Dorothy Kilgallen's. No, really. SplitSecond, who accompanied me on this adventure, didn't see it but I do, especially when the light hits him from overhead. Dotty didn't have sideburns so there the similarity ends.

As for the theater, it is reminiscent of the converted radio studios NBC uses for television at 30 Rock. Studios 6A, 6B and 8G measure roughly 45' x 75' -- I'd say that comes close to the dimensions of the Acme Comedy Theater.  The audience actually goes upstairs to enter the room and sits in a comfy stadium-style seating arrangement with the stage at ground level.

This show is definitely a MUST SEE.

Thanks to the board members who came to the show last week. I think you saw a good one.  Spread the word.

Here's the tip on next week's show (the season finale)... one of the guests appeared on WML on TV!  He'll be appearing with the exact same occupation and we'll discuss his experience of being on the TV show.

A review....well....there isn't much more to review than I already did during the season opener. I will simply add a few things, call it a supplemental review, if you will. =) (one.)

The new sponsor that was used on the show was quite hilarious; it's for a "news site" called : poopycaca.com  Yes, you read that right.....poopy...caca...dot com. I absolutely love those live commercials!

I will also go with a couple others and say that the piano DOES need to be turned down a notch or three. It seemed a lot louder this week. But overall, still great playing.

The clearing of the board is STILL magic. :-D (Two.)

Since I could see a lot clearer now, I noticed that Nicole Sullivan drank pretty much all of her wine by the time the show was over! Oh, she came in with a pretty full glass of wine at the start of the show, and by the time the mystery guest (who we all know by now, si?) showed up, it was pretty much gone. She did play the game quite well, although as the alcohol was consumed, her guessing went awry. Loved seeing her play the game, though!

Elaine Hendrix was an excellent panelist, asked some great questions, got down to things pretty well...I think she should come back as a semi-regular or regular panelist in the next run of shows, she knows how to play the game and play it well. Overall, the panel did a good job of narrowing it down, and guessed two of the occupations before the "10" was showing on the flippy cards. Nicely done, panel!

J. Keith, Dixie was a hoot!

I always found this funny on the classic show, but I'd like to see a mystery guest segment with two stars; perferably one male and one female, that way they can confuzzle the panel. :-p (Three.)

The question marks are teh awesomeness, that is all.

Well....that was an extensive supplemental review, dontcha think? :-) (Four.)

If I don't show up next week, I'll make it a point to come watch for the next season of shows!

Your welcome, sir,
JDH :-) (Six.)
Title: What's My Line? Live Show Returns
Post by: jdhernandez on March 31, 2005, 04:47:33 AM
So yeah, finale....great show, very packed house!

All of the panelists seemed to do quite well, especially Teresa Strasser. She had a nice string of about 9 or 10 correct answers in a row, prompting her to have an "OMG, I can't believe I'm doing THIS well" moment. :-) She damn nearly got the line by herself!

I see that someone probably read my last post and found a male/female tandem that makes a VERY good vodka...erm....not...that..I would....um....know.....is this on....? :-p

It was just very loose tonight, and I must say....that was the funniest live commercial in a while!

Ya know, call me crazy (I know some of you already do...), but I think it'd be nice to perhaps see this kind of production/show going on at the next GSC, which would be GSC4? Honestly, everyone involved in the show does a fantastic job, and I know a lot of people that read this forum and thread from around the country would love to see a show of this type, and what better than to have it during the GSC when many of these people from around the country are in one place, si? I thought about starting another thread about this, but I'm too lazy, it's too late in the night. Ideas/thoughts? Seriously, guys, I think it'd be a hoot!

Oh yeah, the vodka was good, too....

EDIT...PS: Oh yeah, the mystery guest was Brett Butler, not the LA Dodgers player in the early to mid-90s. :-p

Caught last night's show. Went in with an open mind since I'm not a huge fan of panel shows.

Fun way to spend an hour.

A few suggestions:

1. Have the mystery guests mic'd or make them speak up. I could barely hear Hector Elizondo.

2. Slow down when talking. I think some things went over people's heads. I think it would be beneficial to relax so the converstation flows smoothly.

3. Either reduce the lighting or increase the AC.  I noticed J. Keith was wiping his brow a few time. Don't want to see a host in a soaking wet suit.

I love those chairs.

There were 3 video cameras taping the show. Is this for self-evaluation purposes?

Yes we tape for our own archival purposes.  We hope to someday have a demo video, possibly to post online. Stay tuned.
