Title: I Love the '90s Part Deux on VH1
Post by: johnnya2k3 on January 18, 2005, 12:13:50 AM
This week, VH1 is looking back at the '90s again with "I Love the '90s: Part Deux"! And on the 1990 episode as far as that decade's game shows were concerned, "Supermarket Sweep" was featured.

We'll be tuning in to see if American Gladiators, Richard Dawson's short-lived return to Family Feud, and/or Debt will be on there.

Well, maybe YOU will. American Gladiators is the only one on the list that makes any sense. I'm puzzled as to why you even mentioned Dawson's return to Feud, which was barely noticed by anyone outside of GS fanatics (at least, the 2 a.m. slot Feud had here suggested that to me). Debt sort of makes sense, but it ran out of gas surprisingly quickly and ended up being more of a blip than anything. Granted most of the stuff featured on VH1's retro-stuff is, but, well, let me put it this way...You're going to find more people saying, "Wow, I totally remember Wacky Walkers" than you'll find saying, "Wow! I remember the bald security guard from the end game!"

"We"? Perhaps you will. I'll be tuning in to see if Pat O'Brien is mentioned.

Studs and Singled OUt are way more likely to be mentioned than Feud or Debt. WBSM might get a mention with 1997 or 1998 and Millionaire could get one with 1999, but other than that, I don't see any other game shows getting mentioned.

I believe WWTBAM got a mention already in the first edition of "I Love The 90's".

What game shows have gotten mentions in the I Love the 70s and 80s series of shows, if anyone actually cares to remember?

Price was mentioned in the 70's, but not 72, and there was a PSA with Barker from the 80's where he stated you couldn't get AIDS from a cat.

Feud was mentioned in the 1976 ep., and I think Gong Show got a mention for either 76 or 77.

Price was 1978.

Double Dare was mentioned in one of the "I Love The 80's" (strikes back?) episodes..If I recall, Win Lose or Draw was mentioned at some point, as well.

Positive about DD, not so positive about WLorD.

Off the top of my head...

'70s: The Gong Show, The Dating Game, Family Feud, The Price is Right
I don't believe either Match Game or The Newlywed Game were shown, but they should have been.
'80s: Double Dare, Win, Lose or Draw (mentioned in a segment about the board game Pictionary)
'90s (Pt. 1): Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (1999).

God, I hope they'll mention the launch the formerly named Game Show Network (GSN) in the '94 episode.

Are you kidding?  They are naming widely known, or at least cult hit, pop culture things.  You have about the same chance of GSN getting a mention as me buying a computer in the 90s has of getting on the show.

Wheel was mentioned in one from the 80s. I think 86.

Newlywed Game was shown in the '71 (I think) episode, as was LMAD.

Of course there were other game shows they ignored, like Hollywood Squares, Tic Tac Dough, Joker's Wild, Press Your Luck, and the aforementioned Match Game.

Wheel was 1987, and I'm fairly sure it was one of the two leadoff topics.

AG will be (or already was) discussed.

I was surprised that Jeopardy never got a mention in either I love the 80s (or strikes back) or '90s, other than a passing glance from Alex Trebek in Nerds of 84 (Nerd who answers in the form of a question).

Probably some more game shows could be mentioned (I was surprised Press Your Luck didn't get a nod, but at the same time I wasn't), but the truth is that unless a game show is a real phenomenon (like Millionaire was) it won't make the grade. These are pop culture shows, not the history of TV. We really shouldn't get all bent out of shape because of it, I think. Who knows? Maybe they'll do another I Love The 70s or Return of I Love The 80s, and we'll see some of those mentioned. Maybe they won't. Who knows?

P.S.  One I woulda liked to see was Tattletales.

I could see them mentioning Carmen Sandiego.  I'm sure more than a few people in the show's target audience have fond memories of that show.

AG was part of the "Born In" segment of the original "I Love 1989".  It was only a brief, 5 second mention.

I think they also featured MTV's Remote Control in the ILT80's: Strikes Back.

Correct me if i'm wrong.

Here's the complete list of game shows that i saw mentioned on ILT90's: Part Deux:

1990: Supermarket Sweep (Quite surprised to see this get mentioned, even more surprised to see VH1 bust out footage I hadn't seen since the Lifetime era.)

1992: American Gladiators, Studs

1999: Win Ben Stein's Money (it was pretty much a guarantee that we'd see this, seeing as Mr. Stein popped up many times in the series, and even got his own solo segment (Pimpest Tracks aka hip-hop/rap songs of that particular year.)

1996: Singled Out.

But hey, I was glad that my girl Sarah Michelle Gellar finally got some love from the I Love the '90s gang with "Cruel Intentions" and of course "Buffy."

This decade is half over.  Shouldn't VH1 be starting to air "I Love the '00's"?  Memories of the '90's are so upper demo.
