According to a post on the wheeloffortune.com message board, there will be some changes...
There is blue lights all around the wheel.
The wheel lights on the wheel are more pastel.
There is a new category, On The Menu. Plus, there is a prize puzzle. Here's how it goes: The category is revealed by Pat, then a chime rings to say this is a prize puzzle. The contestant who solves the puzzle wins a prize relating to it.

I felt that there was going to be a format change/addition for the new season.
Whatever it takes to keep Wheel the number one syndie show on television, I am all for it.

WOF changes indeed!! CBS just finished building a whole new set for the show!
While there are any number of good set building facilities in town, only CBS has the most respected electronics shop under the same roof. They just finished very cool looking new set pieces.
Some of the CBS techs who worked on the project were proud to show off the fruits of their recent labor. I didn't take pictures or commit many details to memory, but I can say that there is a whole new puzzle board, a whole new wheel with new contestant podiums and host position, and a new small wheel to hold the bonus round prize cards.
Most striking was the far more contemporary look, and the amazing lighting capabilities built into the pieces. The puzzle board is more squared-off at the corners and across the top. The main set piece will still have that tiered wedding cake of concentric circles around the wheel, but much of the outer structure is open construction that will allow the floor to be seen through it in overhead shots. The bonus round prize spinning device is also updated. It all looks very hot, even unlit.
But then, fire it up and this is by far the most attractive game show set I've seen in years, if not the prettiest ever! There is neon everywhere, and all of it looks to be programmable to varying colors*... from hot yellow down to deep maroons and dark blues the rich colors are enhanced by some buffed aluminum looking components that reflect the lighting. It's bright, crisp and colorful, yet it is not the least bit gaudy.
Wheel fans rejoice!
*Before some science major jumps on my case, I know that the color of neon lighting is determined by the composition of the gas in the sealed glass tubing. True neon gas glows red/orange; other colors of \"neon\" aren't really neon, but combinations of other gasses, argon among them. Therefore there is no way I'm aware of to vary the color of neon once it's installed. So yes, talking about neon that can be programmed to vary in colors is a hallucination from an acid flashback. But it's the best way to describe the effect I saw. ;-)

Yet another gimmick from KingWorld/Sony/Merv Griffin...this time stealing an element from that forgotten show \"Number Please\"...

That does sound pretty frickin' cool. Can't wait... I kinda wish J!'s new set didn't look so hellish.

Does that include contestants strapped into chairs with heart monitors attached to them trying to solve the puzzles while being drenched with water and having flames six inches from their faces? :-)

You see, that trick led to cancellation. They (hopefully) know better than that.
Speaking of which, is The Chair still on England?

Well, that would be too radical for Wheel...

Gee Randy,
From what it sounds like, you are REALLY excited about what they've done ... and it all sounds like we're all going to be in for a real treat come September. I can hardly wait.

Let me rephrase this...Whatever non-reality, non-dehumanizing measures that are being taken to keep Wheel the number one syndie show on television, I am all for it. :-)
Mr. West, I am glad to hear of the set changes that are being touted for Wheel's 21st year. I too have a keen interest in set designs, and this sounds really cool. I will definitely be watching in September.

The new set changes sound great. I can't wait to see them.
There is a new category, On The Menu.
Wasn't there a \"Food & Drink\" category?
Plus, there is a prize puzzle. Here's how it goes: The category is revealed by Pat, then a chime rings to say this is a prize puzzle. The contestant who solves the puzzle wins a prize relating to it.

The set changes sound pretty damn cool.
-Regarding the puzzleboard's changes, I noticed on last night's San Diego ep. that the pointy triangular thingys are no longer on top. Was this just so they could put that interstate/bridge backdrop there, or is this a permanent thing now?
-Is the contestant backdrops really a backdrop, or is it still a video wall?
-
video wall.
-
video wall.
You went to a taping for next season?
And the answer to Brandon's first question was that they just removed them for that theme. I do think they were removed before, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Dean, the Food and Drink did category did exist, but on Jeopardy! and not WOF. WOF never had a food-related category prior to the coming season(though a large chunk of the puzzles back when they had a Foreign Word/Foreign Phrase category in the early 90s may well have been food related)
-
Sounds like some great changes for season 21.
-
Wheel's connection to CBS also includes editing shows there.
Vanna also gets her wardrobe from there.
Makes you wonder why they moved out of CBS in the first place.

Jumping back onto the subject of the new set:
Somehow, Randy's excellent description of the new set made it sound to me like this is going to be a fixed set that they'll use every week. I mean this in the sense that now, only the wheel, two video walls, and puzzle board are the only permanent set pieces, and the side decorations and backdrop colors change every week with the theme; and that all the backdrops and decorations and whatnot are permanent on the new set. Is this accurate, or am I reading too much into the description?
Also, Randy mentioned contestant podiums. Is this actually a change to Jeopardy-esque lecterns, or is it just a revamped version of the smooth padded railing they've been using? (And while I'm on a roll, was it really padded, or was it just the way it looked?)
And I'll assume the puzzle board is still touch-activated; am I right? ;-)
Lots of questions in one post, I know, but I'm just an inquisitive guy. ^_^

For clarification...
The set pieces with electronics and lighting were being built at the CBS shop. Other set changes are possible as well, but less intricate set elements (green screen walls, curtains, miscellaneous decorative pieces, etc.) would be built, rented or purchased at other kinds of places. There's no telling how they might accessorize the new set.
Yes, they are keeping the style of podium the players use now - integrated into the wheel set piece. Yes, the present set does feature padding at the contestant locations. It's just a little stuffing covered by an artificial leather-type material. The biggest surprise about the present set is how very loud the motor is when it is on and spinning the wheel for the beauty shots.

Hey, watch it buddy. :-)
I like the fact that the CBS shop is contributing to Wheel's continued success. It brings an interesting question.
Since Columbia-Tristar/Sony owns the rights to Wheel, does that effectively mean that the invitation to return to CBS TV City - if, of course, one were to exist - is closed?

Hmm...isn't it similar to the padded cushions you sometimes see on (sigh)......\"commode\" seats?

Where a show is taped is generally dependent on the deal a production can make with a studio facility. One big difference with taping at Sony is that they have a more dedicated stage than at CBS - the set is struck way less at Sony than at CBS. I believe (please someone correct me) that the only times Wheel has been struck at Sony in recent years was to do Hollywood Showdown, and the first cycle of Russian Roulette. And in both cases Wheel was done taping for the season.

Are they keeping the \"Mystery Wedge\"? And one thing I have missed for years now was the \"Suprise\" space. It could have been anything from a TV to a car. Made for an interesting twist to the game, just like the Mystery Wedge does.

Don't know, but I'll never forget the \"mystery wedgie\" I got in summer camp years ago ;-)
I'm just passing along the good news that Charlie O sent me in an e-mail: He just signed for another four years on WOF. Cool! Charlie is a great guy, and does a great job on the show!

You can tell in that one interview on the WOF CD-rom that Charlie O. is cool as heck!
Anyways, don't forget WOF will be in NYC in Sept. taping for the Nov. sweeps.
