Very Cool TPIR from 1972..First time I've seen Dennis James in anything for at least 30 years

Welcome back, Mike. Man, I watch this old TPiR, and only one comment comes to mind:
Holy God, was Dennis James a piss-poor host. Bad. Horrible. Patrick Wayne-bad.
-
Oddly enough, the tape date on the Dennis James ep of TPiR is the same day when CBS unveiled Gambit, TPiR, and the Jokers Wild!

I have to concur.
"Nothing shaking...unless your shaking popcorn"? Good grief....not to mention I felt like he talked to everyone like a child.
-
I actually kinda liked him...although that popcorn comment was bizzare. As for talking to people like a child...well, the show had only aired one episode when this thing was taped, so people didn't really know what they were getting into yet. Maybe that's an excuse, maybe it isn't; I really don't know, since the earliest episode I've seen aside from this is from November of '72.
-
Empty seats!!!! Did you see them? There were empty seats in that audience. Fat chance of that happening today.
-
Anybody remember Jiffy Pop Popcorn? It was on a skillet thing and you would put it on the stove and shake it until it started popping within the aluminum foil cover? I thought Dennis did a fine job hosting.
-
I know no one else probably will say it, or liked the show for that matter, but god bless you for Paranoia.
-
We should remember..Dennis had been at this over 20 years..possible that a 1952 hosting style didnt work as well in 1972..
3 posts at the exact same time?..wonder how often that happens
-
That may be the best assesment.
I remeber that Ira Skutch spoke w/ tvgameshows.net in 2003. Referring to James, he said something like 'there was no way Dennis would have lasted that long. He was never very good at it.'
-
Also thanks for putting your site back up.
-
Mike
Thank you for bringing back "tv-gs Jr." - the cues from TnPiR bring back a lot of memories from being a kid.
-
Love the return of the Hit Man section, plus the promotional pics. Those are real rarities...especially considering that one has a GREEN player who DID make it to the second round! ;-)

Still happens. They just cover them with a black cloth.

The last time I saw Dennis James host something was on the PBS special "Close To You: Remembering the Carpenters," as he hosted "Your All-American College Show." Very interesting to see him host TPiR.
-
WOW! This is the first time I ever saw Dennis James host a game show. I'm young so sue me! I actually liked his style of hosting, remember this was the first episode of the Nighttime Price is Right, so he was new at this too. Cut the man so slack. I thoroughly enjoyed watching that episode. It amazed me that pretty much all the music cues from that episode are still used today! Kudos!
-

Maybe some of the people in the audience watched the premiere in their hotel rooms that day (assuming they were tourists) so at least they'd know what the show was about!
Re. Dennis - you know, it's funny how time can alter one's opinion. When the nighttime "Price" was originally on, that's the only one I saw because I was in school when Barker's version aired. At the time I thought Dennis did an OK job. In viewing some episodes from his version that are on the trade curcuit, I agree that he wasn't very good at it. I guess you look at things differently as you get older! Wasn't it mentioned sometime before that the announcer always had to say "...back to you Dennis" because he could never figure out when to cut in?

No. We're entitled to our opinions. You probably prefered Pat Finn to Jack Barry on TJW though.

Just saw the Dennis James TPiR. The last program I saw Dennis James host was an episode of PDQ thanks to Shokus Video. I thought his hosting was a little wooden on PDQ, and it's very heir apparent on Price.
Dennis James is like Richard Karn in certain aspects: Likable, friendly, but can't host out of a wet paper bag. (Okay, maybe that was a bad comparison.)

Even with the nine minutes of explanation, they still had time for a full credit roll and a full playout of the theme. I guess the timing was not perfected as of yet. Wonder what Barker did with the extra time?

remember this was the first episode of the Nighttime Price is Right
No it wasn't -- it was taped on the day the CBS Price started, meaning that the syndie Price started tape around the time the CBS price taped.

Not to mention that Mike's download link very clearly describes it as the sixth episode.

Watched it myself, and while it was in NO MEANS the best hosting job I've ever seen (or even in the top 10), I didn't think he was that bad. Compared to Barker in the first couple of years, at least it seemed that D.J. was trying to have a little fun with it. Only Johnny O. seemed to be in fine form, everyone else, however, not so much.
Thanks, Mike, and a GREAT inclusion on your Hit Man page. Nice publicity photo of Roddy and Tomarken in front of the logo (anyone else notice how slim(mer) Rod was in that picture?).

I saw the James "Price" for a year or so before I saw Barker, so imagine my confusion when I saw Barker in an early hour long show. Anyway, did anyone think the "Double Double Prices" (for lack of a better name) was weird?
-
Nobody mentioned this yet, but Mike added a clip of Randy Amasia's entire main game to his Whew page (as well as re-encoding the clips of the opening and Randy's Gauntlet of Villains win).
Having never seen an episode of Whew, I must admit that I really liked the charing and blocking aspect of the main game.
Great job, Mike!

Agreed. Before Ryan Morris and I made separate computer recreations, all I've had to go on as far as seeing the front game in action was concerned were my rusty memory and a transcript of a couple games played over ICQ many years ago. (I still have a hard copy of the transcript from a game Mike hosted, downloaded from the old Game Show Zone.)

Trying to say "Whew!" correctly, it seemed to me. How far into the run of the show were Randy's appearances?
(And I was wondering why I couldn't get TNPIR to download--I must have loaded the page 5 seconds before it was changed.)

Late August 1979, 4 months into the run.
And the James TPiR may return later tonight or tomorrow. I want to gauge how much bandwidth has been used thus far. The popularity has been far above my expectations.

OK, I'll be the first to admit it--I rarely watched WHEW! in my younger days (I had always gravitated to whatever NBC had on at the time [if I was even home, of course], which for the most part was HSq). But I enjoyed seeing that (not just because of Randy A.'s presence, but because I now realize how cool of a game this was). Better late than never. Muchas gracias for that, Mike!

Yeah, I completely forgot to say thanks for the Whew! maingame video. I still don't QUITE think it deserves its reputation, but it certainly didn't deserve celebritization in such a short time.

So Chris...if you feel that way towards Dennis, I suppose we should clear a five-mile radius when you get started on Doug Davidson? ;-)

I hope that you aren't comparing Dennis James of the 6th episode of Price is Right to Bob Barker of 2004, with 6000+ episodes under his belt...
Personally, I had never seen a Dennis James episode until this one. While his style was certainly different, he was still new to this show. I don't think he was as bad as some of you made him out to be. I'd like to see a Barker episode from this same time period and then make a fair comparison.
-
Neither gentleman was particularly hot stuff on Price in 1972, but I have James eps from 1976 in my collection (including what is purported to be his last, IIRC) - and he didn't improve one bit. Barker, OTOH, was on top of his game in '76.
I still maintain that Doug eventually "got it" and, if the show had made Year 2, he would've been pretty darn good. It just wasn't meant to be. He was being rumored for the "Family Feud" gig for a while there and I thought he'd have been perfect for it.
-
Yeah... I'd have to agree. This was the first time I had seen a Dennis James hosted episode of TPiR... and I wasn't overly impressed.
Then again... I just recently saw a couple of Barker hosted 1972 eps of TPiR... and I was surprised to see how... what's the best way to describe this... stiff Bob seemed.
-
Dennis was originally pegged to be host of the daytime Price...wonder how long the show would have lasted if he'd gotten the gig over Bob.

I think the show would still be on, however there would have been a new host search in 1997 after Dennis passed away. The syndie TPIR was very highly rated for the NBC O&Os, and though today it may be hard to fathom, a lot of people of the time thought first of Dennis as host rather than Bob, since Dennis' was airing in prime access.

Dennis probably would have retired from hosting by somewhere in the 80s. Someone around 40-50 at the time would have succeeded him, maybe the likes of Tomarken or Geoff Edwards. WOuld the show have lasted all the way through now? Not as likely. Bill Bell would have either gotten the time slot for his soap ventures, or the hour would have gone back to the local stations.
Was there consideration to expand the nighttime TPIR to five nights a week after the era of the weekly nighttime syndie game show ended? Or was nighttime TPIR slipping in the ratings by the time of its axing.

Yes, in 1985 and 1994. :) Seriously, Viacom already had FF 5 nights a week on the NBC O&Os and Price would more than likely would have to compete with Feud, thus splitting the audience. I think the other O&Os wanted to get away from games, so WCBS went with "Muppet Show" and WABC "People's Court" by 82 when the checkerboard went the way of the dinosaur.

I was disappointed when the "checkerboard" schedules started disappearing around 1980 - it was always exciting to me each fall to see what new games we'd be getting in those slots. TVGuide usually did a good job of describing the major ones in each year's Fall Preview issue, but there were a number that they didn't mention, and I was surprised when they debuted.
For a more detailed look at what shows were in those "checkerboard" time slots, please click this link
http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/St...eckerboard.html (http://\"http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/Station/2357/checkerboard.html\")
Some additional info was added not too long ago.
-
I might have the feeling that Barker was considering "TPIR" his moonlighting gig, since he was still doing "T or C," which he probably considered his main show. Also, it probably did take him some time to get used to a more structured format after doing the more free-wheeling "T or C" for all those years.
-

I always looked forward to see what WGAL-8 (NBC, Lancaster) had to offer.........Pre-September 1980 (around January), for example, 7:00pm was "Tic Tac Dough", 5 nights a week. Dance Fever and Muppet Show bookended the week, but in the middle, we had Hollywood Squares on Tuesday and Thursday, and $100,000 Name that Tune on Wednesday.
When fall 1980 dawned, the lineup was much less exciting. TTD bolted for WHP-21 (CBS, Harrisburg), and in its place on WGAL was a 7pm newscast. 7:30 became the home of "PM Magazine" for the rest of the decade.
WGAL has not aired another game show in the 7-8pm hour to this day.
