.....the second coming of Card Sharks hit the air. This time, with a new host, and a new network- but mostly the same rules.
That's right, Card Sharks with Bob Eubanks premiered on January 6, 1986 on CBS, at 10:30 AM, effectively bumping a perennial favorite, Press Your Luck, to 4 PM.
The rules were mostly the same as the previous version on NBC, except:
The second column on the Money Cards, you were given $400, as opposed to just $200, an 'educated guess' question, like, "What's the fastest pitch ever recorded in baseball?" Also, there was a question every now and then in the game that had 10 people that were members of a group, or had a paticular occupation.
Somewhere down the road- a Car game was added. There were 7 cards, one of them had "CAR" on it. The player was given a Joker, which he/she put on the card which thought had the car. The player could get three more Jokers, as there were three others dealt in the Money Cards.
Sometime later, the car game was completely overhauled. Now, the contestant had to guess how a group of 10 people in the audience would respond to a question. Getting the number right on the nose won the car, missing by 1 would net $500.
This version would last 3 years, until March 31, 1989. A syndicated version with Bill Rafferty would last a year, from 1986-87.

Plus, in syndication across the land, Jim Lange offered couples The $1,000,000 Chance Of A Lifetime. Here is an example of the genius of the some of the contestants:
C H I N _ S _
The player's solution: CHINES!!!!!
Despite this ignornance, the pair went on to win the million bucks.
Thanks to WOR-TV being a superstation at the time, I got to see it weeknights at 7:30 immediately following The $100,000 Pyramid. And I believe quite a few of you did as well.

Originally, all toss-up questions on Eubanks CS were surveys of 100 people. The audience poll and educated guess questions weren't added until later in 1986.

Got to see it on WBNG-12 out of Binghamton at 5pm. Quite the neat show, and at the time, was wild to see a game show giving away a million dollars.

A computer as the main set prop. Very corny, and very-80s. Still not as bad as that one Jeopardy pilot though. ;-)
I take it Chance... was intended to be an evening game across the country? I know Norfolk aired it for a brief time at 7 pm (I think WTKR dropped it by fall 86), and I remember one of the Dallas indies having the show at 6 pm, KDFI or KTVT maybe?

In southwest Michigan, it was an evening show originally (7:30 on channel 41, then WUHQ). But for its first and only full season it moved to 10am on WZZM 13, leading into Crosswits.
Speaking of Chance, I believe Karen Thomas's week on CS88 is still to come on GSN, isn't it?

Initially aired in Dallas on KXAS (displacing $ale) in Jan '86 at 2:30PM, it moved to KDFI in Sept '86 at 6PM following "Pyramid".

It wasn't always an evening entity. KYW in Phila. always aired it at 12:30PM(they didn't air the final years of Search for Tomorrow or WOrdplay). They aired it from 5/5/86 to the end of the run, displacing All New LMAD.
WTAE in Pittsburgh aired it at 7:30PM from 1/6/86-12/26/86(displacing $100K Pyramid, which turned up on WPXI a year later), then moved it to 10:30AM(Davidson HS and it had switched places), and then moved it to the wee hours of the night for its final months.

It moved to 8:30PM on WWOR in September 1986, displacing the Viacom best of Feud rerun package.
Other classic moments of genius: pronouncing Speedometer as SPEED-O-METER, guessing Horsepaint instead of Housepaint for HO_SEPAINT(this was a couple going for a million in their final bonus round, no less), spending about 20 seconds trying to ferret out Abyssinian with all but one of the S's showing, and not knowing Imelda Marcos with clues like Shoes and Philippines, and the entire puzzle spelled out but the I, and not solving Mount Rushmore with all letters but the two M's showing. And we think some WOF contestants are less-than-geniuses.
Funny this show never turned up in cable reruns since, as the majority of 80s syndie shows have at one point or another.

In Seattle, the show aired on KOMO-TV. Don't know the time, though.

Of course, that car wound made history! It would join Just Men! & Hollywood Squares (John Davdison AND Tom Bergeron) of having a 4 car winning streak!
And when the kids played, the "CAR" was replaced with "HAWAII"!

And in the syndicated CS, there were also prize cards that were there as part of the decks back then. If a contestant found one of those cards, that prize shows up behind them ala Classic Concentration or High Rollers style. If they win the game, they keep the prizes they found on those cards.

And IIRC, Super Password was in the afternoon at like 3 or 4.
However, I think Caesar's Challenge was at 11 CST, so that might've been right (wasn't CC a noon EST show?)

It was always seen a 5 p.m. in my area.

In Chicago, the second season of "$1MCOAL" aired for about two weeks in the morning and Sunday afternoon on WGBO--and about that time Milt Grant started defaulting on some of the programming packages he'd spent too much money on for his station and L/T took the show back. Didn't air in Chicago again, except for the few people who had WOR on cable.
That same year, "Strike It Rich" ran at 1 a.m. for WGBO for maybe six weeks or so. Blair Entertainment had more patience with Grant.

SP always aired at 11AM. WOF was at 1130 for a great many years. The other "regular" shows I can recall offhand were CS, P+, HitMan, Just Men, Dream House, Go, Hot Potato and Scrabble.

When they switched to the "how many out of 10" end game, they also had the trip when the kids played, and Bob explained that since the trip was significantly less expensive than the cars they usually give away, the player won the trip (instead of $500) for being off by one. (They did this with the car on the show's last episode, but the player was off by two.)
As for "when did $1MCOAL air where you live", in San Francisco, KRON aired it either at 4:00 or 4:30. (I think it was on an hour block with Jeopardy! at one point, right after KRON realized it was not a once-a-week show...)
