Not including the hosts, do you believe there are any good qualities about Joker90 & TTD90? Also, OT, do you think FLASHGames should do the Joker90 & TTD90 bonus rounds?
-
TJW was an interesting idea, but it shouldn't have been labeled as The Joker's Wild, considering people would remember the prior version from just four years before. I think, with a different title it would've worked, but to avoid being called a TJW rip-off, use a different way of selecting the questions and dollar amounts (something other than a slot machine). With a good nite's sleep, I'll post the idea I came up with later on. :-)
As for the bonus round, I think it could kinda work like the Dream House thing. Have the contestant randomly select how many spins they could get, and then play. As for TTD, they have the CBS bonus game up now, which the 1990 version was very similar to (sans the corny "Dragon Slayer," and the bad rapping).

Well, both shows (TJW90, especially) offered much more money than their predecessors. The definitions concept was unique -- but the "categories" should've been on the Joker machine from day one of the revival.
As for FLASH Games doing any bonus games from those '90 revivals, while I can't speak for Dan and company, I'd suggest not holding your breath. Those same '90 revivals left a bad taste in a lot of mouths.

The only good quality about TTD90 is Henry Mancini. That was his last television work.

Yep. I remember watching that in college with roommates (at 1:30AM!!!). We'd see Mancini's name on the credits and wonder out loud.... he wrote that piece of garbage?

Remember that many bonus round wins on TJW90 saw the contestant win less than the $2000-$2200 in cash won in the maingame. I give TJW90 credit for the questions being a tad more challenging than was seen in the last years of the 1977-86 TJW. I'd have had the bonus round this way: give the contestant a choice of two categories like in round two of the maingame, and give them say, 20-30 seconds to get as many as they could right, with each question earning a spin. Another positive about TJW90 was allowing champs to stay on for an unlimited number of days(TTD90 retired players after 15 matches supposedly, though no one lasted that long in its 13 week run). Thomas Van Dyke's long run of 13 days as TJW90 champ was the longest run of a game show champ for 14 years.

TJW: The opening of the show was nifty. Lotsa flashy chase lights, and I liked how the Joker Machine rotated around. Any open (save for MG98, where it was "forced") that involves the "assembling" of the set through mechanical means gets extra points in my book.
TTD: No. Not a damn thing.
Flashgames: No. There have to be other bonus games I would rather see.
-
Flashgames basically has the '90 TTD Bonus game anyhow.
-
True...just put it up recently.
Here's my opinion.
TJW90 wasn't really a bad game, considering its early flaws. I liked it quite a bit when I was a kid. I thought that the format switch probably hurt more than it helped. Even though they were trying to get back to the feeling of the original show, essentially all they changed was the way the questions were asked. Instead of it being various dollar amounts for definitions, it was defintions organized by category. Either they should have kept the original format the way it was, or go to the original Joker's Wild format of questions.
I also thought the bonus round was better this time around, with my only problem being the jokers having to be converted into prizes. (No wonder the Joker Jackpots were so high! Few, if any, could win them!) Also, I think now it might have been fun to throw a devil on the wheels just for the sake of making things interesting.
TTD90 had no redeeming qualities as far as I was concerned. Bad format, bad host, bad bonus round...bad everything.

Well TTD also had its set "assemble", as you put it, by having the game board swivel up into place, and the X's and O's rise up from the floor.

Some things I remember about those two flopped '90s revivals:
I always thought Edd Hall announced on TJW '90 before he went to The Tonight Show in 1992 to serve 12 years there (he left last spring and John Melendez -- formerly "Stuttering John" of Howard Stern's show -- is the current announcer). But the voices didn't match together.
The CBS station in Mobile, Ala. (WKRG) ran the shows back-to-back in I think the 3:00 hour in 1990; this was during the time I resided in the Mississippi coast where the New Orleans/Mobile stations are seen on cable and now satellite. They weren't seen here in Fairbanks (we still had two commercial stations at the time -- Channels 2 and 11 -- until 1992 when Fox 7 signed on), though we would get our chance very later when USA reran them.
And oh yeah...What about the rapping dragon?!?!?!
(BTW, Patrick Wayne was in Saturday's Rose Parade riding horses along with family members of other country-western celebs, including the daughter of June Lockhart...who, along with Wayne, appeared on Celebrity Bullseye!)

Per TEOTVGS, the announcer of TJW90 was Ed MacKay.
IIRC, I think Edd Hall was still on staff with David Letterman when TJW90 premiered (and left Dave for Jay)--Hall was Letterman's graphic coordinator (I'm pretty sure he also worked on SNL in a similar capacity).
Doug -- and the countdown to 900 continues

Well as far as TTD, the front game WAS more or less the same, with the exception of manual stopping of the shuffle and the reset pot after tie games. The bonus game was essentially the CBS bonus (except you possibly could NOT win with three in a row, and the inclusion of the Dragon Slayer).
I think TTD90 gets its bad reputation from the cheesy host, theme, etc. It's not like they FUBARed the game play...i.e. you didn't just play tic-tac-toe without questions, and could only block by using a "Tic Chip" and solving the outcome of a WACKY dilemma. In other words, while it was bad, it wasn't -INO bad like the bastardization I was not-so-vaguely referencing.
-
I prefer the "Money on the Wheels" format over the Categories format. With the former format, you could keep answering questions until you missed.
With the categories format (a la the classic TJW), you couldn't keep answering questions until you missed (or could you?).
As for the Bonus Round, I liked it, because it was using the Vegas-like format (3-in-a-row wins you the prize, no 3-in-a-row, doesn't cost you anything).

No, I thought so as well. It was in a webpage called Mandel's Guide to Game Shows. He wrote a review of his favorite (& not so favorite) games. Here's what Mandel said about TTD90's tune,
"Throw in a really awful theme 'kiddie-like' song that surprisingly was composed by Henry Mancini. I mean, it was as if the Electric Lights Parade was marching into the studio with Barney the Dinosaur as the Grand Marshall!"

Yes, you could. Both formats were "fast forward style", except that no winnings were forfeited to continue. A big annoyance is that the other players' buzzers weren't turned off while the player in the spotlight was being asked questions of the genial emcee so he had to continually tell the player who would errantly ring in, "Not yet" or "It's still his turn". To his credit, Pat was very polite when that would happen (often) while I'm sure it was tempting to grab a heavy object and crack it across the dumbskull's head for their impatience.

Snowball's chance in hell.
TJW 90: Too close to Bullseye's Bonus Island. It would have grown tiresome too quickly playing for the same prizes over and over again.
TTD 90: who wouldn't have the urge to smash their speakers after hearing "Easy come, easy go - if you pick the Dragon I'll take your dough!" for the umpteenth time? No way :)
We did just release an alternate version of "Beat The Dragon" that used the format from the short lived CBS run. It's simular to the 90 version, but there is no dragon slayer and the tic tac dough was either X's or O's.

WTVQ in Lexington, KY aired TJW '90 at 4:30pm and The Challengers at 5:30, sandwiched between their newscasts. But since TVQ has been Lexington's lowest rated newscasts for about 20 years, they didn't last too long. Thankfully, we were spared the agony of TTD '90.

I wish we could go back to the days of cash syndication rather than the barter that is the rule today. That way, the station is paying for the show and has a vested interest in putting a show on in a good time slot (and of course, keeps all the commercial inventory). Back in 83, the syndie WOF went unsold in NYC. Try getting any show launched today without a New York station on board. Not every market may take a show, but those that do pay cash wouldn't dump it into overnight.

The stations wouldn't stand for it. Most of the A-list shows, including "Wheel" and "J!", already operate on a "cash plus" arrangement where the station pays a hefty sum *and* gives the syndicator 90 seconds to 2 minutes air time for national spots. Correct me if I'm wrong, but without cash plus, wouldn't the syndicator try to jack the price up even more so that the station couldn't make the money from those extra 90 seconds to 2 minutes of spots unless they charged Super Bowl-size rates?
