Title: 2004 Cheers & Jeers
Post by: GSWitch on December 29, 2004, 10:37:35 PM
With apologies to TV Guide, give your opinion about 2004 game shows.

CHEERS:  To Ken Jennings for putting himself into the game show record books, knocking off Thom McKee & Dr. Kevin Olmstead.

CHEERS:  To Pax & the WB for still believing in the game show, despite the reality craze.  On The Cover, Balderdash & Studio 7 made it into the summer of 2004.

JEERS:  Fox pulling a reversal Robin Hood "rob from the poor (non cable) & give to the rich (cable)" by quickly yanking The Next Great Champ, the first male only reality show (or as I call it, the Pro Fan/Grandstand of reality).  Sure they can keep The Swan, but they had to dump Champ!  The 2nd insult from Fox since they still snub "O Canada" & The Toronto Blue Jays!

CHEERS:  To a Conroe contestant who dreamed of what no one thought that anyone would do.  Splashing Simon Cowell with a water bottle!  What a bad sport.

JEERS: To Fox for stealing ideas of other network's reality shows.

CHEERS to Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy!, Family Feud, and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire for keeping the game show genre alive in syndication.

CHEERS to The Price is Right for doing likewise on network TV.  In the same vein, cheer-within-a-cheer to ABC for Super Millionaire.  (Honorable mention to Pax's efforts, well done but sometimes difficult to find on the schedule.)

CHEERS to Rich Fields for continuing a tradition of fine announcing on TPIR.

CHEERS to Randy West for a valiant effort on TPIR, and for a very successful run announcing TPIR Live.  Perhaps someday I'll be able to say so in person.

JEERS to GSN for not delving into the vault as often as we'd like.  (I know why they don't, thanks... doesn't mean I don't wish they would.)  Cheer-within-a-Jeer for the few classics they do air, and for not trying to revive Winning Streak.

As to the board...

CHEERS to Matt and Chris for having faith in my ability to moderate this board.  I'll leave it to others to decide whether or not I've lived up to expectations.

And finally, JEERS to GSWitch for reposting this ludicrous accusation...

Quote
The 2nd insult from Fox since they still snub "O Canada" & The Toronto Blue Jays!
...that was debunked by Messrs. Lemon and Scherer the LAST time he posted it, as seen here (http://\"http://gameshow.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=3933&view=findpost&p=38521\").

CHEERS: PAX for their game show block. The evening block is pretty nifty, although I wonder if they'd ever consider doing a block of shows in the mornings? Seriously, would that be economically sound, if they keep similar budgets to Balderdash and On The Cover, and just do everything in-house?

JEERS: To GSN...although Celebrity Blackjack is my new guilty pleasure. Desparate Housewives, my ass. ;-)

CHEERS: Syndicators keeping game shows somewhat alive...though I'd love to see the market add to the 5 we have now.

JEERS: No more H2 and Pyramid.

JEER: Feud and that damn audience. You know I was gonna say it. ;-)

CHEERS:  To ABC for bringing Super Millionaire into the mix with its bigger dollar ammounts(Jeer within a Cheer:  The May numbers werem't as good as the February numbers which is why SM is not ready to come back just yet).

CHEERS:  PAX for bringing us 3 hours of game show bliss each weekday(2 1/2 if you subtract the rebrodcast of the NBC affiliate's local 1/2 hour newscast).

JEERS:  GSN for its rebranding on 3/15/04.  Nuff said.

JEERS:  The NATPE for not giving us any new game show offerings again this year.

JEERS:  To GSN, nee Game Show Network, for trying to distance their identity from the true "game show" by bringing on reality, talent, and other non-"old-school" definitions of the term 'game show' to the network....

CHEERS: ...To GSN for obtaining the rights to air "Win Ben Stein's Money".

CHEERS:  To those slot machine makers who share their love for game shows with us by continuing to add famous game shows of the past & present into their mix of offerings in the casinos...

JEERS: ...To some of those casinos who, instead of making them nickel video slots, up the ante to $.25 a line (x 45 lines = $10.50 per maximum pull vs a more realistic $2.25).  Bring 'em back down to a nickel -- you'll still probably get all of my money, it'll just take a little longer!

CHEERS: To the underdog networks (WB/PAX) for still believing in the game show genre by putting out some decent quality shows despite non-decent (read: non-existent) ratings...

JEERS: ...To ABC for quietly dissing the seasonal return of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire".  Their excuse:  "We have what we need now to be tops in the overall ratings, thank you...But no thanks, Regis"  Hey ABC, why not be greedy and go for the ratings 'jugular vein' as well -- you can fall back into the basement just as fast...Might as well get as much out of being #1 while you can!

CHEERS: To those involved who are taking scaled-down road shows of TPiR Live to the rest of the country and proving that it is popular and viable to either expand and/or come up with other game shows to put on the road as well.

Anyone for "Whammy Live:  The All New 'Press Your Luck' Road Show"?

And finally, TEARS to those whom we lost in the game show world in 2004, including:

Art James and Gene Wood -- whom, on a personal note, had the chance to spend some time with them in phone interviews of the past.  2 great people who were some of the best in the business!

Jeers to Viacom's few owned stations that aired Pyramid.  Because of them not renewing the show, it was cancelled totally, and it is now restricted to reruns on PAX.  And while we're on the subject...

Jeers to Sony for not trying to find another outlet in those markets to air Pyramid.  At least one of those markets where Viacom dropped Pyramid, Philadelphia, has a few other stations that could've aired it (sans WGTW, which went religious).  I'm sure they could've asked FOX to pick it up for WTXF or Tribune for WPHL.

I won't be so crass as to cheer its cancellation (especially since I still sort of liked it), but JEERS to Pyramid's producers for never relenting on killing the game with a thousand tiny cuts . . . as in "cut to camera three".

That's not on Sundays.  The point (I think) was to rule out putting WWTBASM on Sundays because of ABC's success with "Sex And The Suburbs" and the Shatner thing.

Actually, I wouldn't blame the production companies.  Most of the PC's who are cranking out all of the forensic/crime stories are different than the PC's who are cramming reality shows and reality shows 'disguised' as game shows down our throats.  And of course, all of those PC's are not related to the ones who truly want to get real game shows on the air.  I am sure that there are a few game-show production companies out there right now who keep wanting appointments to meet the networks, but are just thrown into voice-mails instead.

The JEERS should actually be directed to all those network ($&!t)heads who refuse to see any of the game show PC's or hear their concepts, or to those same network know-it-alls who do not promote the hell out of game shows on their networks like they do with "Meet My New Obnoxious Swan Factor Idol" shows.

As if that doesn't seem crucial enough, looking at the overall ratings, it's #25 on the season. Not bad, until you notice that Desparate Housewives is #2 on the season.

Debbie Gibson was but a child growing up on Long Island during the era of the old New York Pyramid [she was 1½(!) when it premiered in 1973], and was a teen on the verge of top-40 stardom during the 1980's L.A. version of same, so one would hope that she might have found some time in her earlier, young life to have watched either of those versions, else she wouldn't have played the most recent Pyramid so successfully earlier this year.  We would have seen more of Debbie had Pyramid gone on to this season.

There was no excuse for not doing a goodbye on the last H2. The last match and bonus round ended with one more segment to go. JEERS to Bob Barker for walking out of the GSC luncheon and generally being a mean old man.

What was the demeanor of that other Bob at the GSC luncheon, Bob Stewart?

But CHEERS to Deborah Gibson for redeeming a horrific performance on "The Weakest Link" by aiding Jody Gray in winning $100,000 in a jaw-dropping tournament run in the final Pyramid tournament.

(No, I'm not going to claim she's the best ever at the darn game -- but a darn sight better than "Reality TV Week" or some of the other stunts they pulled...)

Absolutely on all counts.  As I said on the earlier post, she at least got a lot of what Pyramid was all about and seemed to be very good.  (If one can't get "What Liza Minelli Would Say" after references to David Gest and Cabaret, you could've given Deborah an HOUR and she wouldn't have gotten it.)

He was affable and had great anecdotes about Bill Cullen (and Bill Cullen's hair). Unfortunately his participation ended there. I had been thinking we might get to spend a couple of hours of "quality time" with the man -- he'll never have a more appreciative audience -- but alas not.

I'd be interested in knowing if he still thinks of ideas for games after folding his company, or if he doesn't even think about them any more. (Every time I get the game-tinkering itch I think to myself, "What for?".)

Well, we all know that "Double Talk" couldn't have drained his think tank...

JEERS to Richard Karn, to the person who hired Richard Karn, to his agent, to his manager, to the person who told his agent they were holding auditions for FF, to Fremantle for writing him paychecks, to the maker of the automobile that takes him to the studio, and to the engineer who pushes the "record" button on the videotape machine that records the show.

Karn has lasted 3 seasons so far. He's doing SOMETHING right, or people don't watch Feud because "that guy from Home Improvement" hosts it. Ok, Karn is not Richard Dawson. You'll never see him kiss the ladies, take shots at the producer, or come up with a joke every 3 seconds, but he can be funny.  At least he doesn't TRY TO HARD to be funny, which would make him a bad host. During the first season, Richard did miss a lot of opportunities to joke around when a player gave a bad answer, but I think he's improved since then. I think the producers were conscious to hire someone that's NOT Richard Dawson, Ray Combs, or Louie Anderson, but is certainly likeable enough. Louie may have lasted 3 seasons on Feud, but he clearly wasn't the best host for the job. Louie was inconsistent... some shows were good, and he was funny, but other shows, Louie looks tired, and sometimes appears lost. The part where Louie was the weakest was the ending. At first, he stayed onstage during the credits, and later he would exit, tossing his clipboard towards the camera. He usually would say "Be good to your family, come see our family on Family Feud"... and tried to come up with a closing comment on his own, with varying degrees of success.

I always got the impression that Bob doesn't like making game show appearances outside of Price is Right. I don't believe he's made any game show appearances since Combs Feud, and that was in the early 90s. I think that appearance was just before the shakeup between Dian and Bob. Before that, his last game show appearance was on Davidson HS, just before he let his hair go gray.

But he "had a show to do"--25 hours later.

Bob did do a cameo on one of the Game Show host weeks on H2. They did try to get him to be a square that week IIRC. Bob and the gang did a COmbs Feud TPIR/Y&R appearance the year after Dian went bye-bye(notable in that Bob mentioned, during the first Bullseye face-off, Doug Davidson's upcoming tenure on TNPIR94)

Thank God, Zach wrote that instead of me.  I sure don't want to be like Zach.  But, yeah, I saw it.

You just shot a hole in your own argument.

Saying "Richard Karn isn't as bad as so-and-so" doesn't confer any redeeming qualities on him.
