"1337" is hackerspeak for "leet", a shortened form of "elite", which back in the day was used to refer to the guy who could get all of the cool games, and change your math grade for you, and fix your credit rating.
Nowadays it's used more as a derisive term for a computer enthusiast, usually younger, who THINKS he's in that inner circle, but isn't even close. "He's m4d 1337, d00d."

Ah, yes. Kermin attempted to explain this to Alex during one of the tapings I attended. It was a long, meandering explanation that probably one person (and that person was not I, even though I program computers for a living) in the audience understood. Alex said the shows had been running long that day; I wouldn't be surprised if this explanation gets reduced or left entirely on the cutting room floor.

And this is why geeks are geeks.
"It's an inside joke for computer programmers, Alex." There, that wasn't so hard, was it?

We don't have any of those here.
How would you say "My bowling buddy says ..."?
