Title: If you could have a complete library...
Post by: Ian Wallis on October 13, 2004, 09:10:51 AM
The thread about the 1975 TVGuide got me thinking:  if you could go back in time, and record a complete library of just one game show, which would it be?

For me, I'd have to say "Celebrity Sweepstakes".  It was one of my favorites and a must-see when I was home from school.  Most of my other favorites I've got several episodes of via either trading or GSN, but "Celebrity Sweepstakes" is one treasure that appears forever lost.

Well, I think each one of us should adopt a show.  I will take "The Big Showdown," cause it would take up less space in the spare room.  BTW, the tapes still exist.  They're at the bottom of the Hudson River in those airtight blue plastic tape boxes.

For me, it would be the entire run of Concentration from old days. Another big one, would be the original Hollywood Squares.

I'd like to have all of the PYL episodes (Yes, that includes un-aired ones like the lost BtS episode)

I'd have to go with Price is Right.  Then, I'd finally get to see the 3 "lost" pricing games as well as all the episodes Bob banned from rerunning due to furs.

If we go by the "each of us adopts a show" idea, I've got first dibs on GONG.

Either daytime $otC (Perry). And maybe partial runs of MG7x and TPiR.

For me It would be the Davidson Squares Library.  Such a Great Show!

For me it would be a short-lived show. Something like "Chain Reaction" (NBC 1980 only) or "Face the Music" would do just fine......

The original "Twenty One," if only to spend time looking for tips that the show wasn't on the up-and-up.

Or the ABC run of Password, even if I had to take "Password All-Stars" as part of the deal.

I'd love to have the entire run of Whew!

From someone who was thinking of posting this very question, I was going to say the original run of Card Sharks, since GSN just skipped a few early episodes.  However, I'm going to call dibs on Whew!.  I remember seeing this during its original run, but nowadays, the only memories of it are what I've seen and read online.

and I'll take specific Daytime Wheel Episodes (dunno which ones)

I'm dibbin' Pyramid. Each run, including Davidson's since I'm a completist. Plus I have a little masochist in me...along with some Hungarian and Irish.

Nobody's claimed LMAD yet, so it's mine.  I'd like all versions except for the Billy Bush one, which I'd consider a zonk.

Since $OTC is spoken for, I'll take another personal fave: Break The Bank. All the shows from all the runs. Well, maybe you can talk me out of the mid-1980s run.

I'll take Split Second.  Only because 'SplitSecond' hasn't gotten to this thread yet.  ;-)

Actually, I'll just hang around you guys and bum some tapes from the wealth of libraries going around here!

You're gonna be sorry you asked me, but.....

The ORIGINAL versions of these shows:
Name That Tune (all DeWitt-hosted ones)
The Price is Right
The Match Game
Treasure Hunt (Jan Murray run)
Camoflauge
You Don't Say
The Hollywood Squares (some more of the first six or seven years)
Dream House
Split Second
Gambit
Jackpot (1974-75 run)
Now You See It
High Rollers (1974-75 episodes with the first 'bonus round')

Then there are these 'gems:'
Dough Re Mi
Music Bingo
Video Village
Charge Account
Say When!!
Double Exposure
Seven Keys
Window Shopping
Get the Message
What's This Song
Call My Bluff
Dream Girl of '67
Wedding Party (yeah, I recall watching this as a small kid!)
Funny You Should Ask
The Money Maze
The Big Showdown
Musical Chairs
Second Honeymoon

I know some of us have at least one episode of many of the shows I listed.....

Cordially,
Tammy Warner--the 'Ruta Lee of the Big Board!'

I'll take both versions of "Fun House."

As a side note, I already have the entire run of "I'm Telling!" It's only 26 shows, though, not too impressive.

No problem, you're welcome to Eye Guess as long as you'll let me borrow a few every now and then.  Among Cullen shows, I'd probably take the entire run of Three on a Match.

Still, for their significance, their star power and the amazing amount of television history they span, if I get one series I'll take What's My Line?.

Obviously I would LOVE to have the PYL collection, especially since there are eps. that I haven't seen yet (unless GSN changes that- please?!), but since that has been taken, I'd have to go with Family Feud w/ Dawson. The original and the best.

Giving you some idea of how seriously I'm taking this question...

I thought about the original Jeopardy, but ultimately decided that the current game fills my need for that kind of material, and the older shows would at some point grow redundant.  Not to say that I wouldn't mind seeing a few dozen or even a few hundred turn up again!  But if I get an entire run of shows, it either has to be a Cullen show for which I have particular fondness (my reason for choosing Three on a Match) or something with a lot more humor and star power than Mr. Fleming's quizzer ever gave us.

But seriously, enjoy Jeopardy!.  I'll be up to catch a few episodes with you now and then.

All 686 telecasts of the original Joker's Wild during its 3-season tenure on CBS Daytime (1972-75).

Nah...on second thought, I'd prefer the eps from Season 3 (1974-75). I've decided I'm not too keen on the Joker's Jackpot format. :P

I heard GSN has the 1974-75 CBS episodes of TJW (before they got the first 2 seasons from WCBS-TV in NYC) but I don't think they ever got around to airing them. And only one TJW Season 3 episode - the June 13, 1975 series finale - is circulating among collectors.
