On the week of 9/27 ESPN and ESPN2 are scheduled to air the first 5 shows of "ESPN Trivial Pursuit", a sports and pop-culture based game with a tie-in to Trivial Pursuit. Teams of two compete head-to-head and try to collect wedges by answering questions from 6 categories to proceed to the Money Round, where they can win up to $2500 by answering 6 more questions. A team which is successful in answering all 6 questions in the Money Round will play another game as returning champions, and have the opportunity to go double-or-nothing on that game's earnings by answering a 7th question.
The show is set to air on ESPN at 4:30 ET/1:30 PT, and repeat on ESPN2 at 6:30ET/3:30 PT, Mon-Fri. The network will then decide whether to pick up the show for a full season.
(Disclaimer: I am not on one of the first 5 shows, but my teammate and I are in the contestant pool. We have a good shot of going on the show if it is renewed for the full season.)

Sounds like an ihtresting show Tim. I have an idea as to what the 6 categories look like:
Sports Stadiums
Soorts Movies
The Speed of Sports
Classic Finishes
Autobiogtaphical Athletes
Sports Hodgepodge
Of course, they may or may not all be related to sports but then again, who kmows.
-
I actually have never heard of this before, but I will give it a chance, because just about anything can be better than Stump The Schwab.
-
I'm guessing Stuart Scott is the host?
-
Four wedges are sports-related, two are pop culture. The host is Roger Lodge (host of Blind Date).
Tim H.
PS I will be away from Net access for the next week, so any other questions can't be answered until the show has already premiered.
-
Thanks for the news. Will be interested to see how this version of TP goes.

IIRC, wasn't there a hand-held ESPN Trivial Pursuit released c. 1998 or 99? I remember some sort of hand-held ESPN game involving trivia, I just don't remember whether it was related to TP.

Yeah, but it wasn't related to TP. It was "ESPN: Did You Know?", one of those little keychain games where the teeny LCD screen would scroll by the question, and then when you hit the single button on the device, the answer, then the next question, lather, rinse, repeat.

Yeah, but i think Foster is correct, too...Wasn't there a larger console game (shaped like a football?) that offered mult choice questions ?

That must be what I was thinking of. Come to think of it, I do remember there being two separate games, the keychain thingy, and the larger console. Thanks to both.

Wow, an honest conversation where incorrect information was shared, and then clarified correctly, without dumb guesswork from people who didn't know what they were talking about....iAnd, there were thank you's!
Oh, I see, AdamJK, iris, tmq800, and bandit bobby were nowhere near it.
Well now it makes sense!
Of course, see my next post.

The questions might be sports-related. Or, they might not be sports-related.
Thanks for that insight , brainiac.

What I want to know is: "does this mean that John Ricci, Jr. managed to sell his Trivial Pursuit format to someone?" Or did the ESPN crew develop this version independently?

Craig; this one's just for you.
The 1983 All-Star Sports Edition of "Trivial Pursuit" had the following categories:
Nicknames
Baseball
Football
Hockey
Catch All
Numbers
I don't know what you're smoking to come up with the topics you did, but could you send me some? Please?
Matt, for your rejoinder, I award you a free piece of the pie. Which topic/flavor do you like?

You have the Canadian version. The American version had basketball instead of hockey. The Canadian version also had a fair amount of CFL questions in the football part.

I blame whoever put that list on boardgamegeek.com, then; because I saw the Sports set at Goodwill today, but I already have one, and logically enough, replace hockey with baseball, there you are.
Weren't the creators of Trivial Pursuit Canadian? Or am I just hallucinating?

Nope. You're not hallucinating.
Per the TP website, creators Chris Haney and Scott Abbott were Canadian newspaper men; Haney the photo editor for the Montreal Gazette and Abbott the sports editor for the Canadian Press.

If John had sold this, no doubt he would have told us about it. But that does raise a good question, since at one point, John claimed to hold the Trivial Pursuit TV rights. The logical assumption would be that he held an option for a certain time period which has since expired.
So I ask for the second time this week: John, what's up?
-
Better late then never...I was working with the producer that got the rights to TP..thanks to me (clears throat)!
The format was very cool and had some neat elements and really great strategy...it got watered down a little in development, but that happens...come to find out the producer couldn't sell the format...he blamed my concept...later I found out people didn't want to work with him...the ESPN thing I ended up getting screwed out of the deal...
I talked to Roger Lodge about it when he was here in AC doing Price...it was just a very poor version in my opinion...it's a shame mine didn't see the light of day, I think you guys would have really liked it...well maybe one day.
This won't happen with Rubik's, I alone retain those rights and we're getting some great interest in it!!!

Well now, let's be suportive...John's a lot farther along selling his game show concepts than most of us.
And i'm not sucking up because i know he'll need a new young debonair cheaply-paid host.
-
Ah, you mean me...the cheap debonaire host with sarcasm only Ray Combs could be proud of, yes...
Well, I wish JRJ more power to his game show entities. I also fully realize the odds of them making it in the American syndicated market let alone network are slim. Internationally, he might have something (i.e. Combination Lock at least got piloted...allbeit abroad most notably). But, there are many avenues to pursue. For instance, the game show I created, a game called Triple Play, is being worked out to be potentially piloted at a Maryland university by a good friend of mine. For a format that was whipped up originally in a half hour and tweaked here and there subsequently there after, that's kinda humbling.

Right, and when you move out of your parent's basement and devote a full time career to developing and working on game shows, too, let us know.
Now THAT's sarcasm!
-
Hey, I take offense...we don't have a basement.
Well, did I say my sole thing in life was to develop a game show for television? No. I just figured, hey, I created a format...I've tested in out in internet gaming with friends and strangers alike who genuinely like the format. One of said friends asked for my permission to use the format, and with the proper credit to me for its creation, we agreed upon it and there ya go. It's more than some people can say they've done, but far less than most others.
The game show genre as we all know is on the way down. People want talk shows and a genre that causes a certain hick game show reporter to come up with multisyllabic words to avoid the use of the term "reality" (btw, if you've ever seen him host, you know he's no Wink Martindale). So, all I'm saying is that, in my case, it's something for funsies for me on the side. If I get something out of it, all the better. If I get dough from it, all the better. It's not my sole focus in life. I'm more worried personally about hosting other shows, emceeing events, sports announcing, and voiceover work. And, in the same respect I'm sure John has other things as well of great interest should Rubik's Cube fall like the house of usher.
-

...and if he can find someone insane enough to buy a format based on a quickie fad that died out twenty years ago, more power to him. Retro is in. It's not THAT in. Similarly, producers are insane. They're not THAT insane.

I wonder if John has considered giving "Rubik's" a whirl on the i network? He'd need to round up some sponsors or run per-inquiry ads to pay i, but there is the chance to make it happen.

Youre just an asshole...if you guys have any idea on what it takes to sell something instead of sitting there commenting on other people you'd know it's not easy to get a show launched...and as usual you guys talk out of your asses...Rubik's was a craze 20 years ago but it's still hotter than ever...I have all the sales data and reports that the toy sales all over the world is up in some places more than 300% so don't talk about what you dont know!!

John while I do commend your efforts, I think on behalf of the more intellectually sound posters on this board (and it's not hard to consider myself one of them compared to some other folks around here with bowling buddies and alteregos and such), you have to admit it's an uphill battle and a half. Yeah, it may well be a craze. But, the argument can be made with Trivial Pursuit in the early '90s. It was very popular then (though not in its ultimate hey dey of its release), and hence Family Channel/Wink Martindale/et al tried to turn it into a game show format and it was about as effective as an anorexic kid in the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating contest. And, if I were to place a bet, the same may well hold true in at least this country with Rubik's Cube. I hope I'm wrong for your sake. After all, you've been trying for...what...well over a decade to get something sold. You've procured partnerships with those in the biz...always good. You've had pilots done...good. But, the toughest thing as you well know is to get a shark to bite, and the guppies ain't biting. I wish you well, but just have other offerings on your plate, my honorable friend.

In what markets is the Rubik's Cube "hotter than ever"? Bulgaria? Azerbaijan? Uruguay? Certainly not in the United States. I haven't seen a Rubik's Cube in at least a decade, and I used to work in a toy store.
I wish you all the luck with this endeavor but my calendar says 2005, not 1982.
