Well, I've been wrapping up many a loose end this weekend, and my first foray into Visual C++ is ready to be played with! Anyone who has an interest is welcome to head over to http://fredsmythe.com (http://\"http://fredsmythe.com\"), click the Downloads link, and pick up my Jeopardy Challenger For Windows and see how you like it!
I know it'll work on Windows 98, ME, 2000, and XP. I am not totally sure about '95, and you _might_ have to have the .NET Framework installed on your machine, which you do if you have been keeping current with Windows Update like a good user should. :)
Feedback, of course, is welcome, especially if you spot a bug of some kind. (Also, if the button labels don't render on your machine properly, I want to know. I _THINK_ everyone has Arial Narrow, which is what I used for everything, but I could be wrong.) Once I'm satisfied that it's reasonably bulletproof and I get icons built for it and installed, I'll rev it to v1.0 and start thinking about upgrades. (First on the list will be stateful wager buttons...there will be a radio button pair for Single / Double Jeopardy and only one set of 5 wager buttons, and they will read $200-$1000 or $400-$2000 depending on which radio button you select.)
So, have a look!

A required .DLL file, MSCOREE.DLL, was not found.
any idea where i can get it?

That's the .NET Runtime, I think. You can get that at:
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-file...s.shtml?mscoree (http://\"http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?mscoree\")
Once you download the file, stick it in C:\Windows\System.
If anyone else gets this error, let me know, if we get enough of these I will put it on my site with the program so people can get 'em both in one fell swoop.

now it says \"Please set registry key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\.NETFramework\InstallRoot to point to the .NET Framework install location\"
how do i do that?

Okay, it seems that one needs the .NET Framework installed (which I mentioned was a possibility) for it to work, apparently just dropping in the DLL doesn't cut it. Sorry about that.
As I said, you can get it from Windows Update:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com (http://\"http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com\")
Or, you can download it from here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/netframework/dow...s/howtoget.aspx (http://\"http://msdn.microsoft.com/netframework/downloads/howtoget.aspx\")
Note that because it needs the .NET Framework, it WILL NOT WORK under Windows 95. (Quit complaining and upgrade, it's an eight-year old OS.)

Yeah, I'm falling all over myself to upgrade so I can test your program after reading that.
(Running Win98, and will continue to run Win98 until I either get a new computer or have to regularly run a program that won't work on Win98.)

More power to you. It'll run fine on 98 (with the .NET Framework.) It's '95 that it won't work on.
Yeah, I'm falling all over myself to upgrade so I can test your program after reading that.
*shrug* Your call. On a properly updated machine it won't be a problem.

i did the windows update, then tried the game. no change. i checked control panel > Add/Remove Programs. Microsoft .NET Framework is not there. and the other link says .NET Framework is 108 MB, which would take several hours on my AOhelL. any other suggestions?

The SDK is 108 MB. The Redistributable, which is what you want if you can't figure out how to get it via Windows Update, is 24 MB. Which I admit is still a lot if you are on dialup, and I understand if you didn't want to bother just to run a silly little Jeopardy calculator app.
(But I also point out that since MS is adopting .NET as their development platform, that most people are gonna need it eventually.)

yah. maybe some other time. :)

Does the fact that it's .NET mean Gates gets a cut of my winnings?

Have I told you guys that story? We had someone fax us here at Tech Support about one of our WOF games. They wanted to know who to contact to collect their winnings. They weren't joking. That fax is still hanging on a wall around here someplace... :)

Quick download. Simple clean interface. Good work . Keep it up.

That beats any call that I ever got in my three years of doing tech support, that's for sure...
As for your Jeopardy Challenger, looking forward to trying it, but getting an error \"mscorwks.dll could not be found\". I would assume a Windows Update is in order, in which the next time this laptop gets some cable-modem lovin', it will get that upgrade.

LOL...and if I recieved actual money from all the times I've played Hasbro's WoF, I'd prolly be one of the world's richest men right now. :-)

That's why I always address this in some form when I document my games. For example, this from the Whammy! GameControl FAQ:
Q) Hey, even without Larson patterns, I still racked up $10,000! When do I get my check?
A) Right after scientists successfuly clone Bill Cullen. Money is nothing more than a unit of score in this game.

There's a link in the top-right corner of the page here (http://\"http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=262D25E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3&displaylang=en\") that lets you download the redistributable package.

Good job on the program. I wish I knew more GUI programming.

Wait for the Linux version.
Isn't .NET the scheme that lets Bill tap into everyone's bank account? And make ooze come out of your computer by remote control from Redmond?
Mr. Lemon, how are you and Bill dividing your cut of the players' winnings?
-
*sigh* The .NET Initiative and the .NET Framework are two different things.

Jesus, do ANY of you read things like \"YOU NEED THE .NET FRAMEWORK. HERE'S HOW TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE IT\"?
By the way, it's revved to 1.0, and has a neato icon now. :)
-
OK, I didn't realize I didn't have the .NET, and had no idea that's what the error meant.

Oh, I see. One taps into your bank account and the other makes Visual C++ programs crash :-P

Quite the opposite. The LACK THEREOF is what is making it crash.
Whatever. I've learned my lesson. Last time I share my work with you people.

Now, don't be like that. You should be the first person to know that when you put something out there, you will be criticized for it. You got some pats on the back from it. Now personally, I'm rather weary about the whole .NET thing, even though I don't think it'll cause harm to my computer. But if you dish it, you gotta be able to take it.

Bah, I can give a good goddamn about the criticism, but the unfounded boring anti-MS rant about .NET (which, again, has not a thing to do with the Framework, and frankly is based more about being anti-MS for its own sake than on any kind of actual fact) is unnecessary.
The program requires the .NET Framework. Didn't realize this until I finished it, didn't think twice about it because I've had it installed on my machine since I saw it on Windows Update MONTHS AGO. If I had my druthers, it wouldn't, but it does. So be it.
If it's crashing on you, you should first check to see if you have it installed. I provided a link for that. Chances are you don't.
If you want to download it so it'll work, great.
If you don't, no skin off my nose.
That's all.
