How long has it been since we got word that Gene passed away? Still nothing on the wire yet? Anyone find this unusual?

We got word that he passed the weekend in May that the board was on hiatus. SB of all people reported it. SB did mention the NY Times did a brief obit recently in one of his "columns". Some will take it as face value given the source

Someone awhile back said that CBS Radio News ran an item on his passing, complete with a link to that audio bite.
This was all shortly after his death.

He'll find kind words said in places that appreciate talent. Gene's obit was listed in the current issue of Classic Images magazine, a monthly mag that focuses primarily on classic movie stars of the 30s-60s. This month also has a nice article on Barbara Britton, who, between tv and movie roles, was the Revlon Girl - doing the live spokesperson ads on The $64,000 Question and Bid N' Buy. When someone earlier mentioned he put together the Captain Kangaroo show cartoon feature Lariat Sam, I stumbled onto a videocasette of some episodes and had a chance to re-enjoy some childhood memories. Thanks for pointing out Gene produced them.

Gene's death was noted briefly in the obit column of the current Entertainment Weekly (Christian Bale on the cover).
-
The private memorial service with Gene's friends and collegues was rescheduled from the Friday of President Reagan's funeral to a weekend in July. I will share some of the details for his fans on this board following the service.

Here's the Boston Globe obit from exactly one month ago. The obit writer did a fine job of researching it:

Thanks for that Chris. Gene only lived a half hour away from me for the last four years of his life. If only I had known I would of dropped in for some Tea. ;-)
He was a nice guy. He used to crack me up during Feud tapings with his jokes. Great sense of humor. I'll miss him.

As obits go, that one was very nice.
Thanks for posting, Chris.

he was a good announcer, he announced the game shows in this order
Family Feud
Double Dare
Tattletales
Password Plus
Child's Play
Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour
Super Password
Body Language
Nighttime Price Is Right
Hot Streak
Classic Concentration
Family Feud 1988
Match Game 1990
Family Feud 1994
here are all the game shows gene wood announced.
-
He also announced "Baby Races" in 1993 and "Family Challenge" in 1995.
-
thanks, buddy; i forgot about those 2.
-
I don't blame you one iota for forgetting about those shows! I think "Family Challenge" was his last show. Did he also announce the second season with Mike Berger? I don't recall who announced that season.

The nice thing about the Boston Globe obit is, she could have done all of her research on the web, getting semi-accurate information from game show fan sites and a quote from the Perfesser and left it at that. Instead she somehow got in touch with Gene's daughter Mia Claudia who was likely the one who put her in touch with Ira Skutch, who told her about Frank Wayne being Gene's entree to G-T. It was his announcing for Goodson-Todman that put him on the map as a performer. Very nicely done.
As an aside, I have a real peeve against reporters and researchers using game show fans (the Perfesser included) as definitive authorities, rather than people who are actually in a position to know.

Sounds roughly how I feel whenever I read the phrase "It was reported on ATGS..."
ATGS is NOT a verified news source.
The people who posted there are NOT reporters.
In fact, since there is no accountability whatsoever for what is posted there (particularly when the Never-Ending September was foisted on us) UseNet is often known as an UNreliable information source.
I'd go so far as to suggest that anyone who uses that phrase is in fact attempting to refer to their old ATGS posts and trying to pass them off as verified fact.

He did the fee plugs for summer '98 reruns of TPiR.

He didn't announce the second season of FC IIRC, I don't know who did, though. Gene did do some fee plugs for GSN in 1996 and 1997, and I believe hosted a Feud marathon for them at the time.

IIRC, it was Jim Suss, one of the FAM staff VO's. I do recall he subbed for Randy the W on Playbreak Playoffs late in their run.
