According to a rumour I read about at one of the other boards I heard that after Ken Jennings is finally defeated, the five-day limit that was previously around will be re-instated.
Is this true? Or is this gossip?
BTW, if true, this would be similar to when Tic Tac Dough got rid of the Secret Category because it doubled the pot, which Thom Mckee used heavily in one game to win $37K on one game, which eventually lead to his total of $312,700(cash and prizes).
(The $50K limit edited out of this message only applied to the WCBS days. I made an error there.)
-
I can't see why when this is theoretically just the big payoff for J canging the rules to begin with. It's getting the show noticed and bringing mainstream media attention now. Why on Earth prevent it from happening again?
-
Yeah, that wouldn't make any sense at all. This is what they wanted, isn't it?
But here's me, foolishly thinking the world adheres to logic. It could very well be the case.
-
Well, eventually the viewers are gonna get tired of him and the contestants, especially, are likely to get annoyed that they worked so hard, yet they only get $1000 or $2000 because Ken keeps beating them.
I do wish Jeopardy would find someone that can beat Ken Jennings.. instead of all these players who get clobbered by him.
I mean, someone's gotta be better than him at some subject on the show.
Look what happened to Thom McKee on Tic Tac Dough in his 43(or was it 44th) match when he tripped up on a question on Asia(I think, I'll have to double-check.), causing him to finally be defeated.
I'm not trying to be negative, but eventually someone's going to be better than Ken Jennings on J!.

The Secret Category was a semi-regular feature on TTD through the 1982-83 season. The winnings limit was placed on TTD and TJW for the period in the early 80s where both aired on WCBS in NYC. Contestants winning over $50K saw their winnings donated to charity during this period($50K was the max winnings one could take home on a CBS game show at the time, hence they played by CBS rules when airing on WCBS). TTD still allowed contestants to play until defeated(and all winnings over $50K were to be donated to charity), but TJW retired all one contestant who passed this mark during its run(syndie) on WCBS, Joe Dunn.

I don't think the viewers will necessarily tire of him. If anything this will make them watch the show more, just to see how far this guy will go. If I were you, I would just sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

After double-checking, it turns out Candice Bergen, in the category "Women In Film", did cause Thom McKee's defeat on TTD.
Sorry for the error.
Anyway, at the rate of $34,000 per show(which is Ken Jenning's current average, if Ken lasts on Jeopardy! as long as Thom Mckee on TTD(45 shows), he will have a total of...
$1,530,000!!!
Boy, those people at Sony would be in a tizzy if that occurs, and I don't know if Alex Trebek will be able to handle it.
It would make him the richest player in syndicated history if it occurred.
Remember, this doesn't mean it will occur.
BTW, how much would Thom McKee's $312,700 on TTD be in current dollars??

With all the buzz being generated now about the winning streak even outside our friendly circle, I'd wager the gang at Sony knows this "play until you drop" rule is a keeper.
And, of course, the point may be moot because I'm beginning to think that Ken is never going to lose.

I'd say "let the moderators moderate and if you have a problem, just hit the report button", but then I'd be violating my own advice, wouldn't I?

Why should the Sony folks be in a tizzy about it? I should think it makes no difference to Sony if one person wins $34K a day for 45 days, or if 45 different people each win $34K for one day.

I think the government would prefer that one person winning "$34K a day for 45 days", because one person winning $1.53 million would be in a much higher tax bracket than any one of 45 different $34,000 winners.

I do have some knowledge of what Ken knows, since I do edit some of the questions that he writes that make their way on to Quizbusters as well as some other high-school shows throught the country. There may be a category here and there that he can be beat, but you're going to be hard pressed to find twelve to fit in one show. He has the killer combination, a science major whose first love is literature who has done a lot of travelling and has a deep appreciation (and knowledge) for pop culture.
Something I've been wondering, however, is that when Ken finally does lose, doesn't the person who defeat him also live by the same rule? Or, can they legally say, we're going to back some arbitrary limit, but Ken is grandfathered?

I imagine, within reason, they can do whatever the hell they want. It's their show. Ultimately the only people they have to answer to are the viewers.

Yeah, well I heard that they are going to give Ken Jennings a leather chair to sit down on while questioning answers. (Provided by Jennifer Convertibles, of course)
And they're going to rename the show next week as: "The Get Your Ass Whooped By Ken Jennings Show"
And contestants are required to bow down before him and say "YOU DA MAN !" to him while kissings his shoes
Alex Trebek agrees to grow back his mustache if Ken Jennings wins 50 games or $1,000,000. Which ever comes first
Please, stop posting rumors ! If Lifetime ever mounted a revival of "Rodeo Drive", some of you would make great contestants !

Now THAT is the funniest thing I have read all day!!!
Seriously...I think Ken on his streak is a good thing...I watch J! regulary, sometimes I'll miss a show or two for various reasons (Yeah, I know, shame on me! :-p ) ...but with this current streak going, it has become "appointment television" for me...I want to tune in and see if he can get another game under his belt, and how much will he add to his totals. I am compelled to watch this run.
I bet you right now, that if not for this run, J! would be into summer repeats by now. I just can't imagine having this guy win 10+ games and suddenly putting him on ice for two months, although it would be interesting to see if Ken could still hold his magic touch after a summer hiatus.
All in all...guaranteed...Ken Jennings will be the #1 contender for the next ToC, should one ever be produced. That is of course, unless the producers just see fit to cancel the damn thing and just give Ken the winner's share of the ToC money since they know that none of the contestants who have "qualified" for the next ToC won't be any competition for him !
-
Imagine if J! still gave away cars for every five games. Of course, it would be on a much smaller scale with the unlimited wins (the Chevrolets offered were at least $30K, and the Jag was, what...$50/60,000?), but still, maybe something like a Chevy Cavalier or so...

Yeah, it can.
Some of us DON'T WANT TO KNOW.
Next time you get the idea to be "sneaky"? Don't.

Couple of quick comments here:
I think the $1M mark(29 games) will occur first based on Ken's current average($34,196.18) before the 50 game win streak.
J! will no longer give away cars. It just isn't gonna happen.
If you ask me, Matt will more than likely match up against Ken on Monday. However, he'll need a whole lotta luck because I sense this streak will continue through at least the end of the current season.
Didn't people start to get tired of Howard Wilson halfway thru his run on "Whew!"?

Something I've wondered before, and since a few people have mentioned it...
Why does Jeopardy! have fewer reruns than other gameshows? In particular, why does it have fewer reruns than sister show Wheel of Fortune? You'd think at least that pair of shows would run new shows for the same duration....
-
I think it may have to do with the fact that J has returning champs. Wheel on the other hand does not. People who watch Wheel really won't notice the difference between new shows and reruns, unless they have already seen them. People who watch Jeopardy on the other hand will know the difference, as they would see one champ one day but a different champ the next.

Not only that, during sweeps periods, they have tournaments & special weeks(Power Players Week i.e.). That's why there are only 6 weeks of summer reruns compared to 12 or 13 for Wheel.

Getting more or less back to the original theme, I really think that however long Ken goes for in this series, when he decides the stress of being under those hot lights is too much and he feels he has enough money, he'll lay the buzzer down and let someone else win.
The only person who's going to stop Ken Jennings, in truth, is Ken Jennings.
What would really be comical though is if Ken gets to the Tournament of Champions with maybe $2 million or more and he gets a shot at a paltry $250,000. Hardly worth it.
And just imagine the contestant interview on day 63...
ALEX: Hey, Ken!
KEN: Hey, Alex!
ALEX: 'Sup?
KEN: Nothing. Yourself?
ALEX: Same here. Okay, pick up your signaling buttons...

Not to mention that the other contestants are going to treat him like soiled laundry, since all they'll have on their minds is whupping him.

By day 63, who needs signalling buttons? There won't be any challengers.
More like:
ALEX: Hey, Ken!
KEN: Hey, Alex!
ALEX: 'Sup?
KEN: Nothing. Yourself?
ALEX: Same here.
KEN: Alex, there'll be a little something extra in your pay envelope this week. I think you've been doing a fine job.
ALEX: Thanks Ken, I sure do appreciate it.

Well, Chris, I guess I don't have to worry about it anymore since Ken won on Friday. And I promise never to try to be sneaky again. I betcha that if somebody else posted what I wrote, you probably would have joked with them, but since I'm a newbie, it appears as though you think I don't know the rules. I was just trying to have a little fun. Is that so wrong? (trying to do my best Harvey Fierstein impression from SNL) <putting hand out for a handshake>

You just keep on believing that. You'd be wrong, tho.
It's all good. Just don't be stupid, and we'll get along famously. :)

Day 75: Sony execs show Pat and Vanna the door, and temporarily lay off Alex Trebek due to lack of funds. Johnny Gilbert will be hosting J!(as well as announcing), same for Charlie O. on WOF.(lol)
But this whole thing proves that Jeopardy money is hard-earned vs. Millionaire where you can be stupid and lucky!
