Exactly 50 years ago today on this 4th of July was the death of 3 short-lived game show 1 NBC show and 2 ABC shows. The NBC show was Blank Check (which aired on the same day as Wheel of Fortune and the 2 ABC shows were The Big Showdown and The Moneymaze (both aired on ABC on December 23, 1974 and both ended on Independence Day 1975 (although the final week of The Moneymaze were repeats).
On the following Monday, NBC replaced Blank Check with The Magnificent Marble Machine which was also hosted by BC host: Art James and ABC replaced The Big Showdown and The Moneymaze with 2 new panel game shows: Rhyme and Reason hosted by Bob Eubanks and the short-lived revival of You Don't Say!

I still remember watching The Big ShowDown as a youth on ABC (on a black and white set no less). This was a terrific show, the best of the three mentioned. It's much too bad that it was never revived as it had an excellent mixture of knowledge, strategy and luck involved.
50 years, mercy it almost went by in the blink of an eye.

I'll never forget the "it's a Brand New Day on ABC" promos. School had just gotten out for the summer. I'd seen the TVGuide listings for the new shows and, as a pre-teen, it was an exciting time.
Too bad the "Brand New Day" didn't last long as none of the new game shows lasted more than a year and another major schedule change would come that December.

I was way too young to remember the promos (almost 9 months old), but I remember seeing them via tape trades. The promos definitely made it seem like an exciting time.

I went to summer camp in those days and although I wasn't a huge game show fan back then, it was a drag to come home to see a some of my favorites were gone

I was bummed out about Big Showdown and The Moneymaze getting cancelled, but I looked forward to the new game shows. I made my first of several trips out to L.A. that year. Got to see Showoffs and Rhyme and Reason in person. IIRC they were both done in the same studio as Family Feud. I remember Pat Harrington, Jaye P. Morgan and Adrienne Barbeau being on R&R along with Nipsey. Some of the antics didn't make it on the air. Mostly salty language but it was a fun time.
