Title: Matt O., have you been holding out on us?
Post by: rigsby on March 05, 2004, 11:25:21 AM
Now, I can't be certain that 1) this hasn't already been mentioned (but I didn't see it anywhere), and 2) if I have the right guy, but the Matt mentioned here (http://\"http://www.greenfieldgerbil.com/~matt979/archives/002843.html#002843\") as one of the men at Wednesday's Jeopardy taping sure seems like our co-executive producer.

Unless, of course, there is another Matt in the East Lansing area who is a "game show junkie".

Unfortunately, none of this week's taped shows air until fall, but now I guess we have another reason to fire up those VCR's!

The info given at said website does indeed apply to our co-EP. Whether it is him we'll find out when the time comes.

I know that someone named Matt will be on Jeopardy on June 21.  Who will that Matt be?  Will it be Matt O., or the owner of the blog above, who is also named Matt?  I'll never tell.

Well, if it is indeed the person-who-we-think-he-is, then congratulations and best of luck!!!  It couldn't happen to a nicer guy!

Wouldn't it be cool if the J! people were thinking after the show, "That Matt would sure make a great successor to Alex if and when Trebek retires down the road..."  He's got the experience.

Hmm... that would explain the somewhat cryptic comment in this thread (http://\"http://gameshow.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=3357\"):

Quote
I watch Jeopardy every night, and I probably have a more vested interest in doing so that the average person.

Here's hoping that it was a profitable experience... heck, here's hoping that it's still going on!

You already lost the $1.37, remember? Bad football card investment? It was a 2004 Vick, wasn't it?

Don't worry. If in fact he DID collect, I'll cover the $1.37, and I will bump it in the amount of spare change in my wallet right now, which is (whew, caught me after I spent all of the quarters :)) exactly ninety-six cents.

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: The Malcolm Jackpot now stands at $2.33.

Those who don't know aren't "idiots" at all.  And those of us who do should be ashamed.  (Thanks a lot, Mike!  :-))

The Malcolm Jackpot stems from a rather putrid pilot Alex Trebek hosted in the early eighties called, fittingly enough, Malcolm.  I purposely forgot the premise of this awful show, but it involved two contestants answering "complete the statement" questions with the help of a rubber-animated blob named Malcolm.  Trebek and Malcolm were the best of friends and were the new-day Chuck and Susan.

Unfortunately, Malcolm didn't sell.  But if you go on Jeopardy, draw a sketch of him during FJ, and have Alex recognize his long lost buddy you would win...

$2.33!!!

Isn't that exciting? (Actually, I would love to see that happen.)

During Final Jeopardy, if a board member draws Malcolm (a crude cartoon character from an early-80s pilot w/Trebek), and then explains it to Alex and the audience, he or she "wins" the "jackpot."

Not to be confused with the late civil rights leader or Frankie Muniz's character of the same or similar names . :-P

EDIT: Ahh, I see the other Brandon has explained it as well.

You're new to our game, so it's a fair question.

"Malcolm" is a pilot that Alex Trebek did in the early 80's (no, Zach, it doesn't matter exactly when) that involved him co-hosting with a little white pear-shaped cartoon in a TV monitor, who would also help out with some game duties.

The Malcolm Jackpot is a "collection" that was taken up at ATGS a few years ago, and brought over here, and is paid out to any Jeopardy contestant, who, in the abscence of a correct question to write down for Final Jeopardy (or, hey, if you can answer AND pull it off in 30 seconds, more power to you), instead draws a picture of Malcolm. "Sufficient to make Alex lose his place" was the benchmark at the time, but I'm thinking at this point if he recognizes it as such and points it out on the broadcast, that would be enough of a reaction to cause a payout.

A correction to Mr. Foster-Gray's post: Alex must explain and clarify the drawing ON HIS OWN. Prompting from the contestant is cause for immediate disqualification.

On the other hand, much as we would like to see the Malcolm Jackpot won, and much as Matt could probably use that $2.33 to buy a gallon of gas, I think we'd all agree that we'd rather Mr. Swing--er, Ottinger--had the correct question to write down so he could win much more than that.  Besides, as a now offically progressive jackpot, it will be that much more exciting when somebody wins a $3.72 Malcolm Jackpot in the future (not that I'm offering to contribute to bring it up to that).

As a general rule, referring to someone's potential past problems with alcohol is generally thought to be in horribly bad taste.

Referring to someone's poor career choices, on the other hand, that's just show biz. :)

I don't want a long-winded explanation, I just want a positive ID. Any idiot can draw a blob, claim it's Malcolm, and collect the jackpot. The point of the whole exercise was to surprise Alex with it, so I think it's only appropriate that he demonstrate recognition of his little buddy as a way to judge the quality of the picture.

I mean, we're asking for a pear-shaped blob, here. You don't have to be Picasso.

Mike, you forgot to mention that you'll "...double the jackpot if someone includes a cartoon bubble with 'Remember me, Alex?' inside. Triple if Alex remembers it and mentions the show on camera. Quintuple if Alex goes into a drunken rampage and destroys that player's podium while yelling invectives in French." :)

I think the administrators of the Malcolm Jackpot Endowment Fund would be prepared to break the bank (qv) for any truly outstanding act of sufficiently high-profile excessively obscure game show fandom that represented extreme folly, but that we will recognise any deserving candidates naturally without need for precise definition of the victory condition.

Really, the only way that the jackpot is at all realistically likely to be paid is if the day's correct question is "Who is Malcolm X?" and there's time to doodle a big-nosed blob underneath.

And remember, the Malcolm Jackpot goes up $0.01 every day it isn't won, so that means it's currently standing at

I'm holding out for a Final Jeopardy! about "Malcolm in the Middle."

Because then you can just write "What is" and then draw Malcolm in the middle of the blank area.  Doing something like that might also result in a "Classic Concentration" mention, although I guess that's no big deal.

That would make a better "Catch Phrase" than Concentration rebus, but Alex never did host "Catch Phrase."

I'll cover $3.14 of the Malcolm pot.

A few years ago, a friend of my mother went on the show, and during the interview portion asked "By the way, whatever happened to Ruta Lee?"  Absolute silence from the audience, and Alex was a bit unnerved by it, so the bar has been set for geekiness displayed on air, albeit very low.

I can't draw. If by some miracle I were to appear on Jeopardy!, but then don't know the final question, in the interest of increasing the possibility he'd actually recognize the thing (and at the risk of forfeiting the jackpot" I'll just write "What is the Malcolm Rule?" and be done with it.
