Title: Daytime Emmy noms out.....
Post by: tyshaun1 on March 04, 2004, 10:09:54 AM
TPIR led the way again this year with 5 nominations, including Best Game Show and Host, and Jeopardy! and WWTBAM both tied with 4, including best show and host, as well. H2 had 2 technical noms, and Win Ben Stein's Money had 1 writing nomination. Wheel of Fortune, Pyramid, and Family Feud all had none (which I believe is a rarity for WOF, IIRC)

Correct me if I'm wrong...Didn't one of the shows (and it might have happened more than once??) win for "Best Game Show" after its cancellation had been announced?

I'm thinking either the $20,000 Pyramid or Hollywood Squares (Marshall daytime version on NBC)..

The $20,000 Pyramid won in 1980 just weeks before going off the air. It won again in 1981 (as new shows of The $50,000 Pyramid were winding down) and in his acceptance speech, the following was said: "This is the second year in a row we've won an Emmy for being cancelled".
Also in 1981, Peter Marshall won for best host for The Hollywood Squares which was in its Las Vegas season, and in his speech announced that "after this year, it's bye-bye".

$20kP won the award in May 1981, nearly a year after it had left the air.  $25kP won in June of 89, a year after it went off the air.  In May of 76, Allen Ludden won for best host for "Password" (the 1975 version).

That makes me wonder if the Pyramid series left the airwaves prematurely.

Oh, it did indeed. When Family Feud came back, Card Sharks should've been the show that got bounced. Eubanks took his goofball behavior to its nadir on this show. I understand why Jim Perry couldn't host this version, but I preferred Bill Rafferty's style much better than Bob's acting like a clown most of the time within his chronic "can-you-top-this, I-can-top-that" routine.

Also to the cancelled & get an award list...

1982:  Password Plus won a Daytime Emmy four months after the NBC ax.

1983:  Betty White winning her Best Game Show Host for Just Men! in June 1983, which wasn't televised.

Maybe clowning around is being too nice.  I thought he was either a jerk, or a complete idiot who didn't belong on the set.

Bill Rafferty did a nice job; too bad he couldn't have moved over.

Odd.  I actually think Card Sharks was Eubanks' best work by far.  However, I must agree with the consensus that Rafferty did a very good job on CS; I also very much liked his work on Blockbusters.  Of course he was no Bill Cullen by any stretch, but he still did good work.

IMHO, Bob was best as his sarcastic self, whenever he could poke fun at the contestants.  On Newlywed Game there was a place for that, but not as much on Card Sharks, where the game (again, IMHO) is more important than whatever dumb side comments the contestants make that Bob can laugh at.

Just as Password itself won an Emmy for Best Game/Audience Participation Show, well after it went on to its last reward on ABC in summer 1975.

Uh, Aaron? I think you may be wrong in this matter. Password actually won the Outstanding Game Show award in 1974. Then the show went off the following year.

Oh...okay. Of course; that explains the pic of Allen on the Password set with the Emmy award gracing the Password sign.
