Title: Potty-mouthed game show hosts
Post by: johnnya2k3 on February 28, 2004, 01:06:04 AM
On a Fox special months back called "TV's Naughtiest Blunders from Around the World", they showed a few clips from "Bullseye" in which the host went on some brief R-rated rants about how sick and tired he's doing the show, how one contestant couldn't hear him, and why a sound effect didn't come in on cue all while flipping the bird!

Now before you start complaining, this was the British version that involved darts and the host was Jim Bowen; it was NOT related to that other Bullseye we're familiar with. Hmmm...I couldn't imagine Jim Lange closing his show with "Here's everything you're going for hits the (bleep)ing Bullseye!"

Here, we already know about Alex Trebek mouthing off and drinking a beer while doing Phone Jeopardy promos. And on a German $ale of the Century, the host screwed up and broke into English going "No, I'm wrong; I'm (bleep)ing wrong!"

Were there any other foul-mouthed hosts like the ones I've covered?

I'm having trouble thinking of ANY host I've worked with who didn't have their moments of frustration that were accompanied by a few choice words.

On the other side of the coin, I remember Ryan Seacrest as being very mellow and able to "go with the flow" during some difficult tapings. But then again he was only 19 at the time - it was still very new and exciting, and he wasn't at all jaded.

Joe G.'s was a blown take during a Nonesuch Mincemeat commercial, which was aired by mistake.  He did make an apology on the next day's "$ale" and on the "Today" show, on which he was a regular at the time.

On P+, in a fit of frustration during game play Vicki Lawrence told everyone within earshot, including a studio audience of 300, "Don't anybody f**k with me!" Days later, a memo arrived from the NBC Broadcast Standards* department advising us to advise our celebrities that although such language can be taken out of the tape, it might offend people in the studio audience. After that we were very diligent about so advising our celebrities -- NOT!

*Broadcast Standards were the censors, the foul-language police. Compliance and Practices were the game police and sat with stop watches to make sure that all six fee plugs ran not one second over 42 seconds.

Ben Stein -He was known to use the F word on the show fairly frequently.

Bob Barker - Perhaps not a huge foulmouth. In fact, I can only think of twice on tpir that he swore. Once during the Shell Game available at the GS Theatre, ("Everybody knows the damn things not there!") The other when the director kept calling to stop tape. ("What the hell's the damn holdup now???" (this was met with wild cheers from the audience, btw))

Dick Clark - I was told that in an interview, he used the F word twice.

Regis Philbin - He's let off a few hells and damns on Millionaire before.

Mark Curry - Obviously.

Tom Burgeron - "Well, I guess that Emmy nomination's shot to s--- now, isn't it?"

Drew Carey - (Host of Whose Line is it Anyway?. Does that count?) He's gone on his share of torrent's in the past. Especially on the "Bill Cosby and Hitler" episode.

That's all I can think of right now.

From watching one of Dick Clark's Bloopers/Practical Jokes shows, Jim Perry on $ale (paraphrased):

"Welcome! Today we will...(lights dim)...find someone to pay the light bill. (bleep)" (cue $ale buzzer)

In the harmless curse categories, I've heard a few hells come from Gene Rayburn, Richard Dawson, and Ray Combs.

Ancient British hellraising Falstaffian actor Brian Blessed hosted the short-lived but very clever Nexus game show on the small .tv channel and apparently amiably effed, blinded and generally blued the air throughout the production. It would have been rather out of character for him not to have done so, though.

Not a host, but comedian George Carlin, who was once on the "Game Game" had a routine where......oh never mind.  Actually, rent the movie "Semi-Tough" for some choice dialogue by Bert Convy.  Jim McKrell's in that movie too, but he doesn't say any naughty words.

There was also a third time...a computer was offered, and the contestant said "I can't even balance my checkbook, what the hell am I gonna do w/a computer?", to which Bob responded "I dunno what the hell we're gonna do w/no computers in the future on this show." :-)

Geez, how could I be so stupid?  This should've been so obvious to me as a GONG-o-phile that one host who uttered a few expletives during his run was Chuck Barris.  Perfect example--on the 7/18/78 episode (the final week of the NBC run), they had trouble raising the "GONG" wall/curtain.  Barris walked over and slammed a walking stick right through the curtain, which took him by surprise (of course, this could have all been planned).  After letting out a choice expletive which got bleeped, he went ahead and used the cane to destroy the rest of the curtain while Mother McKenzie went nuts.  Finally, what was left of the curtain was raised.  The act got gonged (in fact, nobody won that day).

If he did, we sure didn't see it on the air--and back then, he couldn't even say "damn," although he could tell his talk show guests to go gargle with razor blades.  And say that The Bantams (the pre-teen rock group that were regulars when "Showdown" started) were "going to sing a song about being together--at least they'll sing together when they start--they may not end the song that way."

The Bantams were three blonde boys--guitar, bongoes and a singer, accompanied off-camera by H-Q house organist Arlo Hults.  They did the theme song and a few other musical clues to questions and got put down by Pyne every day before they got canned a few weeks into the show.  Any other musical clues were provided by Hults, or as Pyne referred to him, "our spook" (since there was no camera on him at the NBC Hammond H-100--Heatter would have to pay him more if he was on-camera, you understand).

Which isn't to say he's never used one; trust me.

The only reason a host cutting loose expletives would be a concern is if he was so foul-mouthed, the contestants might feel uncomfortable around him/her.  Otherwise, it seems to me a non-issue.

If you never went to a taping of H2, you're missing some classic items to be removed from tape.  (I, again, refuse to spoil the final week, but there was more than once things said will get edited out of the final product and/or bleeped)

However, Gong was a show that frequently had Barris bleeped for using the s--- bomb a few times, among his panelists.

Why are "Hell" and "damn" thought of as milder swear words than those dealing with bodily functions or parts? Logically, for example, "damn you" should be infinitely worse than "fuck you".

Last time I checked, words such as penis and vulva were not considered swear words--if, of course, they are used in the proper context.  They are, however, words you learn in anatomy class.
However, when you get to using synonyms for the aforementioned words, that's when you get into edgy territory.

As for your "damn" comment, my interpetation is that you feel condemenning someone to hell is worse than "f*** you".  While I'm somewhat inclined to agree, the mainstream media seems to say otherwise.

That's not the *only* time that "digit" got OOPS-ed.  As the "audience claps with Chuckie" bit was catching on in November/December 1977, Barris every once in a while would pull out a box and show it only to the studio audience.  Chuckie openly lamented not being able to use it during a late 12/77 episode (the only one from that week that GSN was able to clear for air) when he said to the audience after one of those clapping bits, "They won't let me do what I used to do."

I know , I know, to each his own....but I bet I'm not alone here.
Beware, folks. This could be one of the most ugliest pages you'll ever see.
Then why in the hell did you bring up such a question? Testing the waters?
Besides, this thread was dead for *five months.*

Unless absolutely necessary, the only bumps on here should be that "TPIR" game that Barker loved to see Dian in.
Gee which game would that be?? :) :) :)
Speaking of which, on game shows hosted by African-Americans, have contestants ever used the "N" word to describe the host on one occasion?
Why, yes, I believe that did happen once on Musical Chairs after Adam Wade completed a musical number. There was a particular contestant who constantly rang in 4th and...........y'know, just when I thought I'd seen it all, along comes a question like this from one with a wonderous sense of curiosity.

Yes. And right after that episode, they aired an episode of Hat Putato. On this episode, Bil Kullin threw a hat at the contestants.

Later that day, on Wheel of Fortune, Pat and Vanna peed on the wheel.

Now that we've got those questions out of the way, maybe we can move on.

Some viewers called Robb Edward MOrris a Nitwit for playing one on Make the Grade, ditto Michael Carrington on Think Fast. SOme viewers called Ahmad Rashad a Nitwit when he couldn't pronounce Appomattox during a question on Caesar's CHallenge. And they are only nitwits in their ability to host game shows.

Sorry about that, Chief.  If it's any consolation, I was thinking you when I wrote it.  :)
