Title: Millionaire? Checks
Post by: gameshowguy2000 on February 25, 2004, 10:23:20 PM
OK, I've been thinking about this for quite sometime:

I've said all along that the checks given away on Millionaire are real. My family thinks they're fake.

I still think they're real. What do you guys think?

I think you have to ask yourself why you're outnumbered.  Again.

They're obviously fake. Ask anyone who's received cash/checks on the spot on any past game show.

The real check arrives later. The check Regis gives is just a prop that the contestant gets to keep. I still have my fake (Million Dollar) check that everyone gets.

I won $16,000 on the ABC prime time version with Regis. They did not make checks for those of us to win under $32,000. So everyone received the million dollar check they made for us (just in case) at the end of the taping.

Winners on the syndicated version get the check equal to the amount they won.  Although I suspect that if you ask, they'll happily give you the million dollar check as well.

One of these days I'll get around to having my (fake) check, tickets to my taping, Meredith coins, contestant postcard, and thank-you note framed.  I need to find a friend who's into scrapbooking.

Wait--I answered my own question: Probably not.

In my case, they handed Regis three prop checks: a $1M, a $500K...and a $32K.  They were ready for any eventuality.

Yes. They physically jammed it into his pocket, and said "Dammit, you WILL take this fake $1,000,000 check, we printed it with your name on it and if you DON'T take it home with you, we will HUNT YOU DOWN where you live and STAPLE IT TO YOUR FOREHEAD."

Really, tell me, 'cuz I honestly want to know, do you have to work to be this utterly clueless, or does it come naturally?

Note that any checks over $100K on Super Millionaire have to be fake. Per the rules, any prize up to $100K, and the $100K of any prize over that, has to be sent to the contestant within 30 days. The remainder of a $500K prize is a 10 year annuity, starting a year later, and for any prize of $1M or above the remainder is a 20 year annuity, also starting a year later.

This is correct.  And that staple, which is coincidentally still lodged in my forehead, allows me to pick up AM radio stations.  It's very entertaining at parties.

Lemme break down the conversation:

GSG2K: "Did they give you the check?"
TOB: "No, they asked me if I wanted it, but I did not."
GSG2K: "Ah. So did they give you the check?"

Unless this is his homage to Steve Martin in "The Absent-Minded Waiter", that's just ludicrous. I wouldn't be nearly as steamed if this wasn't par for the course with this guy.

No, it's more like if he pulled Captain with nothing whatsoever to ship and I end up rotting all of my stores as a result.

(Actually I suppose that could happen and not be considered a dumbass move. But I digress.)

No, since they still had the check when the problem w/Tecwen Whittock's "cough" was discovered.

::grabs framed CapitalOne check from windowsill::

You are incorrect. On the bottom, the check reads:

;-10304;•":4265•"•1040";9230

And in case there are one or two of you out there who *really* care (which I fear is probably the case), the first and third quotation marks are pointed to the left, the second to the right.
