Title: People You Wouldn't Like To Host A Game Show
Post by: GSWitch on February 13, 2004, 07:01:51 AM
So it's Friday the 13th & I came up with this loaded question.  Who would you hate to see hosting a game show?

The only thing is, it can't be anyone who already hosted a game show in the past (IE Patrick Wayne).

It's not necessary to name a specific game show @ all.

********************************************

My answer; Fox's own loudmouth (MALCOLM!!!), Jane Kaczmarek!

What are your answers?

Gilbert Gottfried. Funny on HS, but imagine him, say, hosting Concentration.

TWEWWW...AND TWENNNTY SIXX...NOT A MATCH! THE BOARD GOES BACK. YOU FOOL!

My answer would have to be Roseanne.  I think she was funny on her show, but I couldn't imagine her hosting a game show.  She'd get such a thick head after a while that I think she'd make the show all about her instead of the contestants.

My #2 choice (not that she ever would host one!) would have to be Ann Coulter.  She'd change the name of the non-winners from "losers" to "liberals!"  :)

Even if we agreed with your hosting performance, we'd still think of several people worse than you could have possibly done(see Scott Sternberg on Let's Go Back and Jack Barry on some years of TJW and on BtB Syndie for an example of a less than stellar host who produced the show as well)

May I point out that Jane Kazcmarek is an actress playing a part and seems to be a charming and refined woman offstage--we know for sure that Bradley Whitford likes her a lot.  :)

Personally, I was thinking of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog ("That was a good answer--FOR ME TO POOP ON!"), but on the other hand, it would be fun to hear him call for Triumph's Bitches.

(And yes, I know that Robert Smigel is really Triumph.)

My own personal nomination for game show hosting hell would be the "wild and unpredictable" Kit Hoover of "Cold Pizza" (also former "Road Rules" contestant).  In the words of Dave Letterman describing Mary Hart, "too damn perky, ladies and gentlemen--too--damn--perky."

I remember the first Family Feud show with Richard Karn hosting... it was before I had joined this group and I didn't have any knowledge ahead of time that Louie had been canned, and when Burton announced Richard's name, at first I thought he said Richard Kind (Paul Lassiter from Spin City)!  All I can say is thank God he's not hosting Feud, or any other game show for that matter!  I can only imagine how awful it would be!

But thanks for playing our game, and I do believe we have a home version of the game for you, don't we, Johnnie?

"Well you can't have that, but if you're an American citizen you are entitled to: a heated kidney-shaped pool, a microwave oven (don't watch the food cook), a dynagym -- I'll personally demonstrate it in the privacy of your own home, a king size titanic unsinkable Molly Brown waterbed with polypendum, a foolproof plan and an airtight alibi, real simulated indian jewelry, a Gucci shoe tree, a years supply of antibiotics, a personally autographed picture of Randy Mantooth, and Bob Dylan's new unlisted phone number! A beautifully restored Third Reich swizzle stick, Rosemary's baby! A dream date in kneepads with Paul Williams, a new Matador, a new Mastadon, a Maverick, a Mustang, a Montego, a Merc Montclaire, a Mark 4, a Meteor, a Mercedes, an MG, or a Malibu, a Marc Moriarty, a Masarati, a Mack truck. A Mazda! A new Monza! Or a moped, a Winnebago, hell, a herd of Winnebagos, we're givin' 'em away! Or how about a McCullough chain saw? I realize that.  Guess I get that from my grandma.

Back when my grandma was living, she liked the Mary Tyler Moore Show.  But she couldn't stand the character Sue Ann Nivens (Betty White).

Guess that would make Bradley Whitford...Allen Ludden!

Here's my personal list...

Anna Ricci- First host of While You Were Out, (hosted so briefly even the official site doesn't acknowledge she hosted the first 10 shows.) She looked a little uncomfy on camera.

The Pet Psychic- Come on, how can you take a crock like her so seriously?

The Divine Design hostess- Has the intelligence of a piece of driftwood and would mug the camera way too much.

Judy Tenuta- Need I say why?

John Edwards- The "I see dead people" guy, not the Senator. Too creepy

Rita Rudner- Funny lady, but too timid to be a game show personality. I saw her discussion/comedy show Ask Rita, which can be entertaining, but Rita does look a little uncomfy. She may fare well as a panelist, however.

Dustin Diamond- We already had two Saved By the Bell alums host game shows (Mario Lopez hosted Masters of the Maze and Mark Paul Gozzalar (sp?) hosted Brains and Brawn), and what have we learned.... Saved by the Bell alums should NEVER host game shows, and luckilly Dustin hasn't taken the same leap.

BTW, when Roseanne tried to obtain the rights to Holywood Squares (which would've been called Planet Hollywood Squares) she announced that SHE would host. Thank god that didn't happen!

Ah yes, only Mario Lopez could make someone long for the hosting excellence of J.D. Roth

Actually I thought Judge Judy would have made a great hostess for Weakest Link.

Anyway my choices.

Rosie O'Donnell: Way too intense with her idiotic humor. No need for canned ham except as a parting gift.

Snoop Dogg: "Shnizzle! dat be wrong Izzle!"

Darrell Waltrip: Unless of course fandango comes back, then he can voice edgar or if there is a new show called "Win, Lose, Or Drawl" ;)

Since puppets have hosted game shows before id also nominate Elmo.

Let me answer this question in an unusual but creative way.  As some of you may know, I work with the Boy Scouts of America.  Every couple of years, the Order of the Arrow portion of the program has a national conference.  I've been adviser to the live game show part of the conference for the past six years.  We played Match Game in 2002, and I was on the panel.  In the form of the question on that game and my answer, here are people I wouldn't want to ever see hosting a game show:

HOST:  "Americas's Funniest Home Videos is producing a TV movie about BILL CLINTON.  What's so funny is that the role of LINDA TRIPP is being played by [blank]."

PLAYER:  "JUDGE JUDY".

JW:  "You know, I always thought you ought to cast people in a movie like this who resemble the characters they're playing, so I said HOWARD STERN."

That would be Anna Bocci. She's cute, but she seems...lighter than air. No substance.

People I think shouldn't host a game show:

Earvin "Magic" Johnson: I'm not sure why they gave someone who can barely talk a talk show, but he sure shouldn't get a game show.

Chevy Chase: Another talk show loser. He'd try to be funny, fail, and sink the show.

Clint Eastwood: "I know what you're thinking. Agree or disagree? Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've forgotten what the answer was. But being as this is Rosie O'Donnell, one of the worst bluffers in the game, able to annoy your behind clean off, you have to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do you, punk?"

Rosie O'Donnell: See above. In her world, no one would ever lose and everyone would be able to play the bonus game.

Here are my choices:

Howard Stern:  His shows on E! are enough for me to say no to a game show.  The producers would flat out reject him based on his credentials.

Ozzy Osborne:  Always has a tendency to mumble a lot these days & throws cuss words at you from time to time.  Definitely a no-no in the game show racket.

Jeff Gordon:  Too nasty especially his personallity on the track can rub off in the studio.  I can just picture him on Wheel.

OK Y'all!  Get reeady for our first toss-up for a THOUSAND buckeroos!

Just thought of one more...

ROBIN GIVENS- When she hosted Forgive or Forget, one would wonder if there were mirrors mounted on the cameras, because everytime she was on camera, it looked like she was admiring herself and posing as if to say "Oh! I look GOOD!" Half the time it appeared she wasn't really listening.
Not to mention, she added nothing new to the "talk show hostess with attitude" that was already polluting daytime TV at the time. However, according to someone on The Big Board, Jonathan Goodson felt the gentle, caring nature of Mother Love wasn't working, so he resorted to an edgier format, and Forgive or Forget was forgotten shortly after that.
Title: People You Wouldn't Like To Host A Game Show
Post by: JohnTheGameMan on February 14, 2004, 11:31:14 PM
Now I do agree on Robin Givens, for when she was brought on to "Forgive or Forget", the novelty aspect of it, along with Mother Love's caring personality, was all but shot.  It just became another boring talk show.
Speaking of which, who wants to see Ricki Lake host a game show?  I, for one, do not.  I don't think she has the panache to do so.
I also agree on Magic Johnson, for his talk show was abysmal.  I remembered an episode when he interviewed Nicholle Tom from "The Nanny" and Magic had a very, very hard time coming up with questions to ask her.
One more candidate, just for the heck of it:  Eric Braeden (Young and the Restless):  He would be yelling at the contestants who get answers wrong all the time.

If you ever get a chance to, watch Mad TV on Comedy Central, and look out for when they do a sketch called the "Magic Jeopardy Hour," where his talk show is turned into a game show (guess which one!). It was during the 98-99 season, when Mad TV was still worth watching. :-P

The sketch will further your beliefs. ;-)

Jessica Simpson
Pat O'Brien (he did a pilot for The Krypton Factor for Fox, but it wasn't picked up because of how SMARMY he is doing Access Hollywood!)
Colleen Haskell
Dick Vitale
O.J. Simpson
Hilary Duff
Wanda Sykes

Trevor McDonald (for our British folks; he's too serious)
Anybody from the "I've just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico" commercials
Sarah Michelle Gellar (just kidding)

BTW, Don Priess of Shop 'Til You Drop didn't announce the Grammys last week as I thought; they were Kevin Beyeler and Gene Baxter (aka "Kevin and Bean" of KROQ).
