Title: In case one of us makes Super Millionaire...
Post by: Dbacksfan12 on February 06, 2004, 12:34:59 PM
In the event one of us qualifies for Millionaire; I was wondering if any board members have extensive knowledge in any areas--and if they'd want to be a phone-a-friend....

Well, if they ask any questions about the Green Bay Packers...

Just don't ask me anything about game shows. Don't know a thing in that category.

For me, it would have to be baseball, the human body, math, Spanish, and current events. It's useful to me since I can calculate how many times I hit my frontal region con un periodico while my favorite team (the Detroit Tigers) lose game after game like they did last year.

Whitburnology for me :)(The study of the Billboard charts). Some that were on Usenet around 1999 or 2000 will remember what I'm referring to.

I could probably help with "Old School" R&B music, mainly mid-70s to mid-to-late-80s, Earth Wind and Fire, Kool and the Gang, etc.

ObGameShow: Kool and the Gang appeared on Davidson Squares, in an elongated square.

Oy!

I know this is an odd bag, but I'd be helpful in theatre, math, sports (especially basketball), game shows, pop music, Spanish, and DEFINITELY geography. If they throw a geography question atcha....I'll knock it down so fast! =D

I get the gut feeling there'd be some negotiation on that one -- as to "how much would you pay for the answer?"

Me?  Probably some sports stuff...

Why are all of you even bothering mentioning game shows as a specialty? He's on this group. It's a safe bet he doesn't need any help there.

As for being paid, anyone who would EXPECT renumeration for their services would get the big finger from me - I don't need attitude on my PAF team. But at the same time if I won a large amount of money, I would feel duty-bound to send out fruit baskets or some such :)

Ooo, good idea for a thread!

My subjects:

Video Games
TV (especially The Simpsons)
Religions (Preferably Not Christianity or Judaism)
Games (Card, board, etc)
Odd News Items

Also, if you are looking for good study materials, I recommend the book The Order of Things by Barbara Ann Kipfer.  From the Popes to Birthstones to Phobias, this book has lists from all walks of life that have come in handy several times while watching Millionaire.

Good luck everyone!  Hope at least one of us gets on the show!

GSN getting the rights to Scrabble and $OTC?  :)

Seems like we have a lot of pop-culture and science/math geeks here (myself included!)  But, what about stuff which I've seen so many people tank on like ancient history, architecture, royalty, and even comparative religion?  Anybody got the 411 on these things?  (If I got on the show, these would be the main people I'd be looking for!).

Good luck all, and hope to see you in NYC!

Anthony

P.S.  Oh, and, since I'm past 18 now, cross your fingers for me too!  :)

ANYWAY, I know a fair amount of history, and some about architecture, but, not nearly as much as the mini-encyclopedia I mentioned earlier.

What I want to know, is that, will there be anyone to answer if there's a question about Potent Potables?? I mean, you've GOT to be prepared for these things...

I could do fairly well with religion and ancient history I guess, since it is still pretty fresh in my mind.

By the way, do you have to be 18 to be a Phone-A-Friend?

From what I can tell, if you really wanted to, you could probably use your pet dog Sparky as your PAF!  I don't think there are any restrictions as to who one can use as a PAF (recall the guy who used Rosie O'Donnell!), but I've never heard of anybody using a teenager or kid simply because I think most people who are on the show believe adults are smarter (at least, as far as I can recall.  Did anybody use a teenager or kid as a PAF?).

In essence, you have to be at least 18 to be a CONTESTANT on the show, but not to be used as a PAF.  Like I said, I believe there are no restrictions on who you use.

I'm something of an expert on music, TV, world capitals, history, "The Wizard of Oz", and other areas...if you need a PAF in any of those areas, just let me know.

And even if there were restrictions on who the person "listed" as your PAF, it's not like a 14 year old can't be in the same room when the call is made and ends up providing the answer.

The Simpsons
South Park

B. Mays
C. DiMaggio
D. Ruth.

"Sparky!  Hank Aaron broke whose home run record?"

"Roof roof!"

"The dog says Ruth.  I'd trust him."

Maybe it's just me but I'd rather have a dream team of Phone-a-Friends whose knowledge spans many different subjects than pluck a person from here who says they specialize in a random subject, like sub-Saharan ritual art.  (If any of you need a PaF who knows sub-Saharan ritual art, I took an African Art course 18 months ago.)

I'd say anybody who has passed the Jeopardy! 50-question exam would be a more than adequate Phone-a-Friend.  I don't want to influence anybody's PaF picks but I did pass the J! exam about two years ago...:-)

Not only have I passed the "Jeopardy!" test twice in two years, and the non-phone "Millionaire" test once, but when I was in college, I managed to extend the above "talking dog" joke, minus the "Phone-a-Friend" component, into a 2-minute audio editing project.

I haven't spoken up in this thread yet because I'm pretty sure every piece of esoteric knowledge I have is matched by someone else on this board.  I know there are people here who know quite a bit more than I do about local TV Guide editions and radio station jingles, just to name two things.

General pop culture, with more than enough on pre-rock popular music to get you kids by on a PAF (but I could also tell an older person who Andre 3000 and BigBoi are).

Also, theater (and that isn't necessarily pop culture, so it is separate).  Don't know who the heroine of Ibsen's "A Doll House" is?  Who wrote "The Birds"?  (Both the play and novel the Hitchcock movie was based on, come to think of it.)  I could help you there.
