Title: Ten years ago today on Jeopardy!
Post by: brianhenke on June 02, 2014, 05:17:05 PM
Some guy from Utah named Ken Jennings showed up. He won...he won again...he won again...and won 71 more times.

It's beyond weird that Julia's streak is happening a decade later...

It really isn't. Julia's streak is already twenty deep. Sometimes events just cluster like that.

It's beyond weird a quirky coincidence that Julia's streak is happening a decade later...
Fixed.

Brian, I'm sorry I ever called you an idiot.

You're clearly a troll.

I thought the big question was intent and ability. I think the work product herein answers those questions.

What I find unnerving is that it's been ten years already.

Tell me about it.

I was about to burst back on the scene and ream Henke some more for his burning case of apophenia but I'm convinced Jeopardy has hacked my iPad because why else would they have that FJ tonight when they knew damn well that I was midway through A Prayer for Owen Meany? Why, I ask you?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the end to Julia's streak now mean we have a full tourney field for next season?

Someone who wins five games and more than $69,000 will mean the first time in a long time (ever?) that a five-game winner did not compete in the tournament of champions.

I had to look to see who is on that bubble...it's poor Rani Peffer. Be a shame, I say, if she doesn't qualify.

But what's the bigger weight- money or wins? Because I'm suddenly curious to see what would happen if a champ won one less game but significantly more money than Rani did. (Which $69k won't cover- $70,701 was her final.)

Wins first, then monies.

I think I'm missing something in the TOC rules.

I just looked at the j-archive, and found 6 5-game winners this season.  Going back to last season starting at the end of the TOC, there were 4 more 5-game winners.

That would only be 9 qualified and leave 6 open wild card spaces for biggest money winners in that span to enter the TOC.

How does that leave Rani Peffer, a 5-game winner, on the bubble?

Because of the fifteen people who would be in the tourney right now, she has the lowest money total. Simple.

The field right now, at approximately two months left in the season, would consist of the following if qualifying simply ended right now. Listed in order of when their reign ended.

-Joshua Brakhage (5 wins, $104,205)
-Drew Horwood (7 wins, $139,100)
-Rebecca Rider (5 wins, $102,600)
-Jim Coury (College Champion)
-Andrew Moore (6 wins, $139,803)
-Ben Ingram (8 wins, $177,534)
-Jared Hall (6 wins. $182,001)
-John Pearson (Teachers Tournament Champion)
-Rani Peffer (5 wins, $70,701)
-Jerry Slowik (5 wins, $122,800)
-Sarah McNitt (5 wins, $91,938)
-Terry O'Shea (College Champion)
-Arthur Chu (11 wins, $298,200)
-Sandie Baker (6 wins, $142,200)
-Julia Collins (20 wins, $429,100)

Not as hard as you make it seem.

Wins first, then monies.
What's mildly interesting there is that the First Alternate has over $112,000 in four wins. Something that Chris P. alluded to; is the consolation money taken into account or just the victories?
