Title: PBS teases a revival...
Post by: Adam Nedeff on July 15, 2013, 03:25:51 PM

Check out the cryptic photo that PBS posted to Tumblr over the weekend.

Yeah, but you need \"Loot\" and \"Warrant\" first.  Better pass.

They\'ve updated the post to note that \"this is not about new episodes, but will be appreciated by any 90s kid.\" Still, seems exciting.

Even as a youth I disliked that part of the game.

So, who did you guys vote for in the Family Feud poll on the right side?

And here I was hoping PBS would start airing reruns of Ghostwriter.

This will still be nice to see broadcast quality episodes once again.

/I miss Noggin.

//The N is still an okay network though.

While I\'d definitely be on board if this happens, has there been any proof that it\'s indeed reruns of the show? Looking up some articles on the subject, the best I\'ve found is RUMORS that it\'s reruns, but no confirmations. Besides, the world map has changed quite a bit since the mid \'90s, would people really be interested in watching dated material? Then again, GSN has been running on that strategy for nearly 2 decades now, what do I know?

Wonder if that would make for some issues if children (still in school) were watching?  Or do they slap a \"Information may be outdated\" disclaimer somewhere?

Starting in the second season IIRC, the show put a disclaimer in the end credits that the information was correct as of the tape date.

A modern revival would make more sense then 20-year old reruns for PBS, but who knows.

Someone with more acumen than I could make a really funny and on-point Venn Diagram macro out of this.

I look forward to seeing the adventures of Plastic Diver Guy in slightly better quality than this.

With the cuts public broadcasting has received over the last decade, the set for a revival would probably be whittled down to five desks and a standard globe.

One of the things I can\'t stand about certain kids game shows is when the humor is forced or the host tries to look and act hip&cool. One of the things this show got right is they embraced the cheesiness through and through. If the show was done in the form of a hard-boiled crime novel it would fail because you couldn\'t take it seriously. The fact that they had The Dying Informant, Plastic Diver Guy and the rest is a testament to getting the tone right and it helped.

/Awesomely awesome solo game also helped.

Even as a youth I disliked that part of the game.

The \"playoff round\", as I\'ll refer to it, was supremely better on the \"Where In Time\" series, but seven year old Jeremy quite enjoyed those flippy boxes on the original series.

Still don\'t know how any kid lost on the US map.

Although the \"Maps are outdated\" point has been noted, my concern would more so be with Rockapella. Two or three of the members from the series are no longer with the group, and I recall the group using melodies from popular songs to tell the episode\'s story. I mean, Rockapella isn\'t The Beatles, but wouldn\'t you have to get the former members to sign new releases, and then pay the group a royalty, as well as any royalties to artists whose songs they covered?

The songs were all parodies, so you wouldn\'t need to pay royalties on the songs the parodies are based off of AFAIK.  As for the theme song, it was written by Sean Altman & David Yazbek, not Rockapella. So royalties for the theme song goes just to the two of them. As for royalties to the rest of the group, I\'m not sure if they would get any royalties (I don\'t know if they were part of an acting union, or how royalties in this sense work).

This is not true.

Well that\'s a song Rockapella themselves have released/sold on their CDs. So if anything, the royalties for that song would go to them. I don\'t believe Rockapella paid a royalty for Zombie Jamboree, especially since this version has an extra verse written by Sean.

No it isn\'t. The N became \"TeenNick\" in 2009.

As for the topic at hand...even if this is true and PBS starts showing WITWICS reruns, what time of day would they be on? Of course, I\'d watch at pretty much any time - as my username makes clear, this show more or less WAS my childhood.

/It and Power Rangers, VR Troopers, etc.

//I didn\'t have cable TV at my first house, OK?

It would have to be on \"Monday through Friday at 5!\" :P

That\'s almost precisely how royalties don\'t work.  If they did, I\'d release a CD of Justin Bieber songs, and all of the royalties on those songs would go to me.  (Plus you guys would all rush out to buy my Justin Bieber covers, wouldn\'t you?)

Look, I\'m not claiming I understand the complicated world of music licensing.  I\'m just saying you don\'t either.

I\'m even more amazed there were kids that could conquer the Africa map.

Why of course. I guess it seemingly slipped my mind since the channel didn\'t really change with the name change as that\'s what it was, only a re-branding.

The Asia map served that purpose for me.

Then when they expanded the US map to include all of North America it to me was disappointing.

So which map garnered the most wins?  I wanna say Africa & Asia are the 2 biggies followed closely by Europe & South America with poor USA bringing up the rear.  Shame.

I think it\'s a toss-up between South America and United States, in terms of win percentage.  However, United States got replaced with North America in 1993.

Also, if they decide to rebroadcast 1990s episodes of WITWICS and WITICS, I just bet that the episodes \"The Taking of the Towers\" and \"Brandenburglary\" will be intentionally skipped due to featuring the World Trade Center towers and being a bad reminder of 9/11.

Doesn\'t mean they won\'t put episodes up for streaming on their website or on Netflix or something else. TV\'s not the end of the line for PBS nowadays.

Could they be working on a new Carmen Sandiego video game for the Playstation or something?

If there\'s any educational style hit franchise coming to a more modern system I\'d honestly like to see them expand a bit on the Oregon Trail iOS game that was released earlier.

I\'m also curious as to what this author\'s source is. He is the only article I\'ve found that contains those supposed words from PBS. I would have thought by now that someone else would have gotten a statement from PBS denying Carmen episodes were reairing.

I was mad about the extra stuff they added to the North American map. I could get rivers and canadian provinces...but national parks and mexican states?
