So I'm watching Wheel and noticed that a player landed on a gift tag that earned her a $1000 gas gift card from 76.
Got me thinking...let's say you go on Wheel and you land on that and win it. Now say you don't live in an area where you can go spend that gift card at a local 76 station. Would you still have to take the gift card as it was, could you trade for another one for a station that you do live near, could you accept a substitute prize, or would it just be an automatic forfeiture? Piqued my curiosity.

Real simple. '76' gasoline is owned by ConocoPhillips. The $1000 gas card can be used at any Conoco, '76' and 'Phillips 66' gas station.

As far as gift cards go, If 76 (or any other company) was underneath a corporate banner that had a different regional chain closer to you, then I can see them offering you a $1000 gift card to that station if the gift card didn't work all over the corporation (like Exxon and Mobil). Otherwise, I'm pretty sure you either take it and offload it or forfeit it altogether. There's got to be something in the prize agreement contract that says Wheel can't give you a BP gas card if 76 is the one offering/sponsoring the prize.
-
I'd take a prize like that (one with a very high and almost-instant resale value) and immediately put it on the market.
That was simple.

In this case, you should be able to use it at any Conoco or Phillips 66 as well.
I haven't seen a 76 station in over 10 years.

I've often wondered what people did when they won season tickets for the LA sports teams on TPiR back when they gave those away. If you were from Boston, would they make some sort of arrangement for you ?

The arrangement would be the same as if they were won by someone from L.A. who didn't care for sports, or someone from a city with fewer than 4 pro teams: "you can take these season tickets to the Rams, Dodgers, Lakers, and Kings, or you can forfeit them."

Did TPIR ever offer tickets for Clippers, Raiders, Ducks and/or Angels?

In my case, it would be complicated- I have no 76 stations and ConocoPhillips' properties were leased to other stations. All we have on the east coast is Exxon, Mobil, BP, Lukoil, Getty, Sunoco, the occasional Valero, Gulf, Citgo, and beyond that there isn't much- at least not that I can think of right now (and I'm fairly certain I missed a couple).

Likely not. I don't recall season tickets being offered when all 4 teams existed. The window of time all 4 teams existed is extremely small; the Mighty Ducks started play in 1993 while the Raiders' last year in LA was 1994. Also, back in the '80s, would you rather have Lakers tickets or Clippers tickets? The same holds true for the '80s Dodgers vs. the '80s Angels.
ETA: I thought Joe meant offering all 4 sets of season tickets at one time. I want to say I recall Raiders tickets being offered, but that's just a hazy 25-year-old memory speaking.
-

Exactly. Clippers tickets are what they gave you if you *lost*. :)
-

Yes, tickets for the Raiders were offered.

I suppose you could simply ask for a $1,000 generic gift card (say Visa), or a voucher to purchase one. Like Mark said, I doubt they'd give a card for a competitor.
I remember reading about an 80s Pyramid contestant who won a trip to Alaska...where she lived. I think they allowed her to get another trip.
-
Once on 80s Pyramid, a computer programmer won a new computer and they replaced it with a separate prize, as well.

I suppose it was different in the '80s, but that tickles me because despite working in the industry and having four separate PCs around here (admittedly, one is running Windows 8 and another is a netbook for when I travel), I pretty much always have a use for a new one. :)

That is a shame. Guess that ruins Christmas.

Actually, Barker once said on air they offered cash in place of the ticket value to out-of-town contestants. I doubt they gave this option to one who lived in LA and didn't care for the tickets, but I don't know for sure.

You know, Don, whatever problem you have with me, get over it. I'm beyond sick of this.

This was completely uncalled for.
Please don't start trouble.

And you're moderating because...?
By the way, Chris, if you're going to snit over Don's actions, you might as well pick a lane. (http://"http://gameshow.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=23508&view=findpost&p=291382")

Good point. My statement was pretty out-of-line too.
Sorry about that, just panicked a bit, fearing another war was on the horizon.

I don't think your statement was out of line at all. Don is acting like a petulant child- for what, I really don't know- and I don't think it's fair that he's allowed to keep doing this. I mean, just because you hate me is no reason to hijack a thread that asked a legitimate question about a problem that some contestants on game shows might be faced with.
-
I mean, just because you hate me is no reason to hijack a thread
And the only reason the thread got hijacked is because you went off on a tear about it.

And I wouldn't have gone off on said tear had Don kept his opinion to himself for once. I didn't say anything that should have set him off.
I mean, okay, when I say something stupid, I expect I'll catch hell for it. But not when I ask a question about something that I don't know the answer to and am legitimately curious as to what the process would be.
-

Protip: "It wasn't my fault I couldn't control myself; he made me" isn't going to end well for you. Just saying.

Tell me exactly what I did wrong here. Don hijacked the thread with his post, Don insulted me for no damn reason, and Don has been taking shots at me for a few months with little reason to be taking said shots (except for one time). Why am I the bad guy for saying something about it?

Dammit guys, I just ran out of popcorn. Don't make me go back to the store again...

I know it's hard, because it seems like he's getting away with it, but you shouldn't have said anything. Let the comment stand and people will know who's right and who's wrong. Don did not hijack this thread. He baited you and you took it. Don't next time, as hard as that may be.

I shouldn't, you're right.

So, um, the unneeded prizes? Didn't LMAD do that with the zonks?

I was thinking about that, but it's really different circumstances, isn't it?

I remember a recent contestant on Price dealing with the same issue (I think it was for a trip to San Francisco). Drew joked that she would get to live in the lap of luxury in her own city for a few days.
Honestly, if you can't afford it, that may be a nice staycation if you like your own city enough.

I remember an episode of TPIR thats on youtube that they offered 4 sets of season tickets of LA sports teams for Race Game. She wasn't from LA or something and during the Showcase Showdown Bob said we would have given you cash or something for them instead. Which makes me wonder, if they are playing for a price and don't know the prize can be swapped or something like that such as in this case, that would affect their playing of the game I would think. What's the incentive of winning 4 teams season tickets if you're not from the area and dont know you can get rid of the tickets. I know I wouldnt try too hard to win them.

Or the classic clip that is usually played on TPIR specials where the contestant is going to play Race Game and doesn't need the prizes. I guess there are some prizes that are not as popular than others but still. I guess it's just luck of the draw. Sometimes the IUFB prize could be better than the main prize.

The same incentive if you're from SoCal and you're playing for a snowmobile--you're on a game show for likely the only time of your life. Don't come off as a complete boob.
In this age of Craigslist and eBay, it would be quite easy to unload season tickets. 20 years ago, not so much.

^ Good point. It seems that with the Conoco/Phillips/76 thing, Phillips is the only one of the 3 that has any stations in Michigan, and they're all in the SW quadrant of the state (a good 4+ hours from where I live). All of our 76s rebranded in the early 90s.
If I won that, or anything else I have no use for, I would rather take it and see if I could sell it/give it away than decline it.

Dunno about you, but my incentive would be to win as much as I could on stage -- even if I later refuse some or all of the prizes -- if only for attempting to claim the "top winner" position in the Showcase Showdown (spinning last) and hopefully also claiming "top winner" in the actual Showcase (bidding or passing on Showcase #1).

I know this is completely off-topic, but when I saw this, given the fact that the gift tag in this particular instance only had the '76' logo on it, it took me a second to realize it wasn't a $7600 space.
