Any chance this remake will work without the likes of host Summer Sanders or panelists Lori Beth Denberg and Danny Tamberelli?

No. None whatsoever. That show was so panel-personality driven that they brought in the friggin' BIG SHOW to be on it. Before he DEVELOPED a personality, even.

(You gotta be kidding me.)

I wonder if today's child audience knows who Danny Tamborelli or Lori Beth Denberg are?! I don't think either of them have done much since FIO originally ended. Lori Beth was in the movie Dodgeball but Danny T, I don't think has done anything. Me personally, I'd like to see Amanda Bynes back on TV or movies in some form. Maybe SHE could host Figure it Out if Summer Sanders isn't going to.

Grumpy Old Man complains about panel shows again.

I'll be surprised, but pleasantly so, if they realize this time that the game needs to be played totally for funsies.  The only game that's being played is being played by the panel.  The contestant just sits there and answers questions.  Intuitively, you tune in to a game show to see it being played well, however the prize is awarded for failure.  Goodson-Todman had that figured out, which is why they played for meaningless stakes and eventually (with the syndicated WML?) for no stakes at all.  Here, the contestant wins when the performers fail at their task, and if the performers succeed, we're disappointed because the kid doesn't get the trip to Orlando.  It's wildly counterintuitive.

Never happen. She's retired.

I assume the new show will have today's Nick stars as their panel, and that's not going to appeal to the fans of the '90s show. That's not to say it won't find a following with Nick's current audience though.

Agreed.  I'm not sure where they would tape, but if it's Orlando, just give the family a trip there just for being selected to be on the show.  Kids like to see the panelists slimed, so keep that.

In the case of the panel, it'll likely be the stars of whatever shows Nick airs. If they can pay the game and not try to upstage the contestant, it should prolly work just fine.

Looks like Matt won't be surprised.

So for me, the question is, do kids care how well the celebrities play the game? Are they rooting for the contestant to win, since the contestant is a kid like them, or are they rooting for the panel to solve the puzzle, since that's where the majority of the focus is during the half-hour? Or do kids just want to see slime and messy clues dropped on celebrities' heads, and don't care about the outcome of the game?

(Personally, I was rooting for the panel, but I was moving out of the demographic by that time. Which is likely the reason I wished they weren't so overt about making sure the slime got dropped in every single round.)

Nickelodeon Studios in Orlando shut its doors in 2005 or 2006 -- the network hasn't taped anything in Universal Orlando for some time.  Believe that site is now being used for a Blue Man Group show and TNA Impact Wrestling tapings.

While Nick Studios did shut its doors in 2005, it was used once again in 2008 to film My Family's Got GUTS. Of course, it could be argued that it was no longer Nickelodeon Studios but it was nonetheless filmed on the soundstages that once belonged to Nick and were the same soundstages used to film the original GUTS.

I bumped this to let those who may be interested know that my younger sister Cheyenne ("Shay," as her friends call her) submitted an audition video to be a contestant on Figure it Out a month or so ago. A week later, she was selected to be on! I will be accompanying her (shocking, I know) to Los Angeles next weekend where she will be taping her game. Thanks to my obsession, she's spent a lot of time even before the revival was announced watching the original Figure it Out, so she will definitely know what she's doing. Feel free to send cyber vibes to her so she can try to win some rmore.. stuff!

As one can imagine, we both had a really fun time at taping this Sunday. This is a highly faithful revival of the show. There are still three rounds (1:00, :45, :45), secret slime actions for the panelists, clue helpers (now called Clue Force III since they perform more than just charades), the sound effects are all the same (the theme music is not) and a new way for contestants to be slimed. The set is huge and brightly lit. The biggest change for fans is no Billy the Answer Head, but the reveal is now on the "It Board" (http://"https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/s720x720/536156_10150691779066363_664866362_9958539_1876968430_n.jpg"), made up of HD monitors. Taking myself out of the family-on-the-show setting (and watching three games that she wasn't in), I felt like I was watching the 90s show in a 2012 environment, so I think they did a good job modernizing it without taking away what made it fun. I'll try to field any non-spoily questions you may have.

I guess the $64 question from me would be how were the celebrities? Good chemistry? Were they trying hard to stop the contestants from winning? (Something that was broken with the old show, IMO).

The two episodes I saw showed some good chemistry. There was some silliness, sure (it's a kid's game after all) but they were certainly trying to figure out the words on the board. The questions asked were surprisingly good.

It looks to be stripped in weeknights starting in June,

It's been years since I've seen the original, but from what I remember, there was a pretty high win percentage for the kids, while Lori Beth Denberg seemed to be the only one who consistently guessed their secrets. She was almost the spoiler of the bunch, if you would.

Yeah, she was the only one on the panel to not ask stupid questions. Everybody else would ask silly questions (which is fine) or eat up a lot of clock fumbling over a question to ask. Even as a kid, I wondered why the panel didn't win as much as they should have.

If I was producing, I would have a line in the contracts somewhere that if one of the panel is obviously not playing the game in the spirit it was meant to be conteested (eg: stalling, asking "Hey, do you like bacon?" and so on) that they forfeit their game check. Another fix is to do what Name's The Same did, and have the prize fund paid out of the panelists who blow it.

This is the problem, unless you're playing for smallish stakes. The panel either becomes Mean Ol' Spoilers because they're preventing the contestant from winning, or in order to be friendly they bag the game and goof around. If the prizes are props from Nickelodeon shows and small takeaways, sure, play full tilt. Once the top prize is Space Camp or a ranch getaway, that becomes a problem.

If you were producing, you would tell them to play it straight, and they would have.  They kept rebooking people who did not take the game seriously, which should tell you clearly that the game was not the priority. That's a good thing.

Then a) you're taking the whole exercise a lot too seriously than you should be, and b) good luck booking panelists.

I would be very surprised if the panelists on TNTS weren't at the minimum reimbursed for those payouts, and more likely if those were even their own checkbooks.

"Figure it Out" falls into that category of game show where the fun/laughs/jokes are more important than the game itself. And, like many of those other shows, if it's played as a straight game, it becomes rather boring. Especially when kids are your target audience. I say let the panel have fun.  That's what kids are tuning in for.

I think what he's saying is that it's okay when a game is lighthearted when only low stakes. On shows like What's My Line and To Tell The Truth, the cash prize was more like "Hey, thanks for coming on the show- here's a little cash to cover your expenses while you're in New York." Once you raise the stakes, you put the panel in a compromising position. Nobody on that panel wants to be the one that denies a 9 year old the trip to space camp, so they try and stall actually playing the game as much as they can.

I agree it should be a lighthearted affair, and I'm sure a lot of kids go on the show just to show their talents. But I'd say make the grand prize reflect that.

There's nothing wrong with the idea that the fun is more important than the game.  In fact, that's how it should be, especially on Nickelodeon.  Therefore, as I said earlier in this thread, it just doesn't make any sense at all for relatively decent prizes to be dependent on how well this goofball panel plays the game.  Because every once in a while, they're going to get one right, and then they're the bad guys.  It'll be covered up with cued applause and happy high-fives, but that doesn't change the fact that the only one with anything at stake loses when that happens.

And no, the answer is NOT to give the panel a stake in the proceedings.  The answer is to not play for real prizes.  Certainly give the kid real prizes, just don't make it dependent on the outcome.

I think something we may be overlooking is that, at least in my experiences this weekend and even with my own sister, these prizes are not super important to the kids. They're already winners. They've been flown to L.A, are being put on Nickelodeon, get to meet celebrities they watch all the time, are being treated like rock stars and have the chance to be slimed. That seemed to pretty good for them, anything else afterward was gravy. No one that I saw was crushed that they didn't win the trip to Lake Wobegon.

You are uniquely ill-equipped to understand this, since you've been on 523 game shows, but how the kid feels about it isn't what's important.  On a happy-fun show, it is counter-intuitive to watch the "stars" try to deprive the kid of a prize.

Another suggestion, and I'm just throwing this out there- what if the kid got REWARDED when the panel guessed his or her secret? That way, when the panel wins, everyone wins. Make the clues a little easier to improve the win rate, and you're done.

Either way, just lower the prizes. Of all the stuff offered on Nick game shows over the years, I think the coolest thing was when kids got to take home actual props and cell drawings from Nick shows. I could have cared less about Roseland Ranch- give me the Hidden Temple prop.

Oh god. It's been so long that I don't even remember. I do know that these past few years they've made their logo a blimp a few days before the Kid's Choice Awards.

Anyway, this looks really good. Honestly, besides the arrow motif and the absence of Billy, this looks exactly the same. Well done to them. I hope it does well.
