Title: Paul Williams on Huckabee
Post by: gaubster2 on September 03, 2011, 09:07:23 PM
While I don't care for Huckabee, I was flipping channels tonight and see that Paul Williams is on Huckabee (formerly of Match Game '79, among others) and current President and Chairman of the Board of the ASCAP.  I did a double-take since I don't recall seeing him in anything since Match Game.

While I never followed his career since I was just a kid at the time, I was surprised to see that he is still active and doing well.  He looks pretty good for almost 71!

He performed "Rainbow Connection" on Nickelodeon's charming-in-reasonable-doses Yo Gabba Gabba within the last couple of years. Looked great, and it was great to see him.

Paul Williams was a huge deal in the seventies.  He wrote major, major pop hits as well as quirky stuff like the Love Boat theme and the songs for The Muppet Movie and Bugsy Malone.  He showed up on-camera in all sorts of things during that period as well, but yeah, for the last thirty years or so he's mostly been under the radar.

I also remember he appeared on the pilot episode of The Fall Guy. Unfortunately, his scene was lost forever on the butchered beyond belief season 1 DVD.

He sat in with The Roots recently on Jimmy Fallon, I believe to promote his album. I agree that he looks great for 71.

Was introduced to Paul Williams eight years ago, at a music-related charity event in Nashville.  Totally enjoyed the conversation, but then got called away.  What a talent!

Had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing him about 4 years ago - he's still writing musicals and spending a lot of time donating to charity. SUPER nice guy.

Best line though - I told him after the interview that i was a gs buff, and sure enough , over the weekend, he was on a Match Game panel.

Without missing a beat, he responded: "Was I lit?".

My photographer and I still laugh hard at that.

Just glad to know that Williams is still with us. Dunno where I got it from at the time, but in early 1998 I coulda sworn to have heard that he had passed away . . . about a week before his guest appearance on Dexter's Laboratory first ran. Glad to sit corrected.

Now to catch the rerun of the interview.

Hands down, Paul Williams will always be Little Enos Burdette.  IMO he singlehandedly made Smokey and the Bandit 3 halfway watchable.
