Title: Todd Newton sighting
Post by: JMFabiano on November 28, 2003, 06:49:28 PM
I've started listening to 102.7 FM here in the NY area (recently undergoing an image change after the antics of Opie and Anthony), mostly cause they play nothing but Christmas carols for the holiday season.  Well I've discovered that one of the DJ's on the station is none other than Todd Newton!  Busy, isn't he?

In response to the question in the topic: Yes. :)

Todd's been doing a daily radio show for New York for close to a year now, and has been asked to stay on despite the fact that the station has changed programmers and formats during his tenure. He says he loves the gig; like most hosts and announcers, his roots are also in radio.

And for another "Newton Sighting", Todd is hosting the Reno "Price Is Right" stage show at least through the first week of December. The show has already been held over past the originally planned closing date, so if you've been wanting to see it, time is getting short. I plan on visiting a performance or two this week... Sunday, Monday, maybe Thursday. Say "hi"!    ;-)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't he doing his "what used to be called 'Blink'" gig from L.A.?

And why any radio station goes to Xmas music 24/7 before Thanksgiving is beyond me (heck, I read somewhere that some radio station down South went all-Xmas on Halloween).

It started a couple of years ago after 9-11 when a few stations decided to start early with the 24-7 ho-ho to try to ease tensions. (Just makes me more tense; I hate the season.) Apparently it got ratings and other stations have picked up on it.

As far as I know -- yes. When the station was 'Blink" (during its "Barbie" phase) he did his show live from there. Since then, as I heard, he now voice-tracks (pre-records) his shifts.

You're correct, but reread Randy's post...he said Todd was doing a show FOR New York, not FROM...

They say there is more suicide and depression around the holidays than any other time of year. I know if I spent my waking hours listening to "Little Drummer Boy" and "Jingle Bell Rock" before Thanksgiving I'd be getting out the revolver. OTOH if I had to listen to Opie and Anthony I'd be getting out the AK-47.

L.A. FM station KOST has taken up this Xmas carols before Thanksgiving format. Their TV spots are faced by none other than Dick Clark. Their former program director was one Rod Roddy.

I was not trying to correct our esteemed colleague.  I think the Newton broadcasting the NY show from L.A. aspect had been discussed in a thread on the EZBoard site and was just trying to make sure that I had read that properly.

At one time, there was a growing trend in radio of disc jockeys doing shows for other markets from other markets (not sure if that's still the case).  The CHR/pop station in Chicago known as "Kiss-FM" used to only have one disc jockey broadcasting from on site; the rest of the shows (while produced for the Chicago market) came out of other places--AM drive from L.A., middays from Cincinnati (that would be the Randi "with an I" West show), etc.  Didn't they (or don't they) call this voicetracking?  And is what Newton is doing (hosting a NY show out of L.A.) considered such?  Or do I have my radio terms mixed up (it's been ages since I've set foot in a radio studio)?

I'll hang up now and listen for my answer.  Thanks, Coach.  :)

Yes, such a concept is called "voicetracking", and you are correct on all counts, though voicetracking DJs are usually pre-recorded, rather than "live". It's the big media companies' (especially Clear Channel) way to save money.

By the way, who does the morning show at Kiss-FM in Chicago? When you put Kiss, LA and mornings together, the first person that comes to mind is Rick Dees.

Doing a show from a remote location is merely called "doing a show from a remote location". :) Voicetracking is a completely different animal...you have a station with a robot or a computer to automatically play the music, so you don't need a DJ there for the whole shift, right? So the DJ comes in, is handed a list with his music log (which has already been programmed) on it and he goes into a a production studio and records his stopsets, one after the other, bang bang bang. Assuming a minimal amount of retakes, his whole show is ready to go inside of an hour, and then engineer then takes the tracks and drops them in the proper places in the program log. Result: You think it's a live show, when the whole schmiel has been prerecorded and assembled seperately, possibly the day before.

He goes by Drex (his real name is Kevin Buchar).  He used to do mornings in San Antonio before coming to Chicago (where he supposedly does do the show live--I don't listen, mainly because I fell out of the Justin/Britney/Christina/OutKast demographic ages ago).  I think the morning voicetracker on before they decided to go live in AM drive and middays was named "Valentine".

And thanks to you and Chris L. for the clarification in terms.

According to True Value Hardware Stores, Christmas is just around the corner. Nobody should drive that fast.

By the way, by next week it should be "the last minute..."

Off the topic of game shows, but it follows the thread, so what the hell.

Every year, usually the weekend before Christmas, I do my Holiday Baking. Growing up, Mom always made English Toffee every year, and she taught me how, so I make it up here (with fudge and cookies) every year to make up for the fact that I usually can't get home for Christmas.

So a week ago I'm in Costco, and I actually looked around and said "Damn, should I load up for Baking Weekend?" Then I realized it was fully a month off.

(Let me first start off by saying that I too am groaning at my own jokes, but here goes...)

Well Chris, while you are at Costco, don't forget the Knudsen's Cottage Cheese.

I'm planning to put my Christmas up next weekend, but you'd be surprised as to how many houses already had their Christmas lights out last week!

ObGameShows: If any game shows are taping Christmas eps this year (some simply air reruns), they're likely already in the can by now.

Yup. Valentine used to be the morning guy until Drex took over, and I haven't listened in the mornings since (its far more immature nowadays). Rick Dees does the top 40 countdown in Chicago, and did the morning show in L.A. Which brings me to this question: Did Ryan Seachrest do mornings for KISS in L.A.?

No. Rick Dees does morning drive for KIIS. So it has been, so it shall be, period, paragraph, end of story. They will pry that mic out of his cold dead hands.

Seacrest does evening drive as part of a duo with Lisa Foxx (who I see did mornings in the market I used to work in) on Star 98.7.
