When you're out with friends and what not, do you ever bring up game shows as a topic of discussion; or are you reluctant to out of fear of looking dorky, etc.? Typically, I'll only talk about them if someone else broaches the subject. I did find out last week that two co-workers were closet watchers of GSN and USA back in the day as well.
-
I talk about it all the time at work and with friends. They ask me, and it's helped defined my quirky personality. I do game tournaments at work, and others with my GS friends, and not GS savvy friends.
-
I've used game shows (especially Price is Right and Press Your Luck) as examples when teaching probability and statistics. I also recently gave a talk on Press Your Luck at a math conference in New Orleans. It can really be hit-or-miss with my students; I've had classes that absolutely loved it, and others that weren't really into it.
My girlfriend tolerates my game show geekiness, but definitely doesn't share it (nuts!). That's how a lot of my friends are as well, but there are a select few that are genuinely interested in talking about them. My mom and grandmas definitely love watching and talking game shows, though...both fondly remember watching the USA reruns, GSN, and a bunch of other shows in the '80s.
/both had huge crushes on Peter Tomarken and Jim Perry as well...;)

My circle of friends knows I'm a bit of a geek in that regard, but we all use a few catchphrases as running jokes, i.e. "Survey Says!.....BZZZZ!", or even mimicking the losing horns to denote fail. Every so often I'll drop in something completely obscure that someone will get.
-
whenever I disagree with somebody, I say I disagree circle gets the square!
-
My answer is unchanged from the last time this was a topic.
(that is to say, yes.)
-
At the height of my obsession with GSN ('99-'05), I brought it up very frequently. However, I think my friends had me pegged as being too weird. Nowadays, if I do mention it, I'm much more reserved in so doing.
-
"Game Shows and Friends"? Is that a new GSN programming block, a la "Bugs Bunny and Friends"?
-
Anyone who knows me for any length of time knows I'm into game shows. Coworkers, friends, etc. I've never worried about what people think about that.

I thought it was something like "FOX and Friends", but hey.
ETA: My brother and I have gotten into long discussions about game shows and their intricacies.

I can see why you'd be confused, but one involves cartoon characters doing and saying silly things for the amusement of children and those with child-like minds.
The other is a compilation of animated Warner Bros. shorts.

As to the OP, my friends know I like game shows, so it doesn't surprise them that I talk about game shows from time to time. More often than not, they've seen or heard something and actively seek out my opinion. Can't tell you how many times the whole Ken vs the Computer thing has come up in the last month. I know better than to talk only about game shows, or to turn every discussion into a discussion of game shows. That's why I HAVE friends.

I've been asking her to write them down so I can try to find some support online, but she either says "I'll do it sometime" or gets angry.
When I talk to people about my passions and my hobbies, I can usually pick up on social cues and things that will let me know if they're interested or not. When they aren't, I have enough sense not to press the issue. Your mom is throwing off a neon red "DO NOT CARE" sign, and you're not seeing it.
-
I've had those occassions where my friends and I would talk mostly about the more well known shows, like Wheel, Price, J!, Feud, PYL, Millionaire, etc. Whenever one of them brings up something obscure and has the facts wrong on who hosted or whatever, I hide my geekiness by either keeping my mouth shut or agree with them. One friend brought up actor Ken Berry once, and one remark made was "Wasn't he the guy who hosted the show with the slots?" I'd reply with "Yeah, I think so, been a long ass time."

Usually, I'll make the correction, but in an "I'm probably guessing" fashion, not the matter-of-factly fanboy way.

This. I once had a co-worker who would reply to any statement with a quote from an old, OLD movie that nobody had heard of...followed by asking if we had heard of it...followed by reciting trivia about the movie that none of us had ever heard of. While in the break room one day, somebody actually said to him, "I'm tired of listening to your voice" and turned the volume on the TV to full blast, and he STILL didn't take the hint.
My co-workers know I have a website and they know I have a massive collection of DVDs and memorabilia, but I don't bring up game shows unless somebody else brings it up first. Having said that...yes, I've done the trick I did for Conan O'Brien for every co-worker.

That's just a quirky little trick. That's different than interjecting your knowledge of any genre into every single conversation. Most of us here know when to use either...
-
but I don't bring up game shows unless somebody else brings it up first.
Same here. My family and friends realize my love for the genre, but it's not a topic of discussion very often. What I can't get though it that a couple of them don't like game shows at all. That puzzles me. I can understand not being as fanatical as I am, but most people would watch in passing or have some sort of interest when a big new show came on. I've got one friend who doesn't even know who Bob Eubanks is. For some reason his name came up in a conversation on New Year's Eve, and this particular friend didn't know who he was, which surprised me.
Oh well...his loss I guess :)
-

I'm not "pulling a Ricci". She told me I shouldn't have brought her up in this conversation, and on top of that I didn't like people assuming lies, so I removed all mentions.
Now, I would appreciate it if we could drop this subject in favor of the actual topic at hand. (And my apologies for dragging it off slightly.)

"You know… the guy from the old Newlywed game?"
I keep my love of game shows on my sleeve, but when it comes to the minutiae of game show trivia, I don't really flaunt it. Chances are, my co-workers don't know or don't care, and understanding how humans interact means that most of the time, conversation is a two-way street. They talk about things I like, I talk about things they like. Usually, that leads to great interactions.

Welcome to Off-Topic Thread II: Off Harder
/Not really
-
My enjoyment of the genre is well-known to anyone who has known me for any length of time. I have learned to wait until the other party brings up the subject before engaging in conversation.

My preacher sometimes references "To Tell the Truth" in his sermons.

Fair warning: I'd say my birthdate, "September 22, 1974" to you, and you'd dutifully respond with "ABC, Password, Split Second," et cetera, et cetera, and once you were done, I'd smugly say, "Ha! September 22, 1974, was a Sunday, so the correct answer is that there were no game shows on that day."
/Okay, I wouldn't really be smug about it.
//And now that I've posted about it here, I won't have the opportunity to be smug about it anyway.
///There is a trick for figuring out, in your head, the day of the week for any given date in any given year, but I haven't practiced enough to get it down pat. (Here are the instructions (http://\"http://quasar.as.utexas.edu/BillInfo/doomsday.html\").)

You know, here's the weird thing about it...when I first began doing that trick, I would clarify by saying "IF you were born on a weekday." And what I came to discover is that shockingly few people know the day of the week when they were born. I've seen my birth certificate; I know I was born on a Tuesday. But apparently nobody else bothers committing that fact about themselves to memory.

I was born on a weekend. And 3 game shows aired that day. It's not out of the realm of possibility.

It does, however, add a level of difficulty to Adam's little stunt!
As we discovered last summer in a "game shows on your birthday" thread, I was born on a Saturday in 1960, so I've got nothing.

Admittedly I didn't look at that one. Go ahead and take an assist anyhow. :)

Was G.E. College Bowl running on Saturday or Sunday at the time? In 1960 it was still on CBS.

One of the worst examples of my "geeky arrogance" was when my family and I watched "Quiz Show" for the first time. I tried to stop myself, but I couldn't help pointing out "That's wrong" or That's not right" at certain aspects. And it wasn't just things that were obvious, but things in the background as well. (The B&E blackboard on the office wall comes readily to mind)
/fortunately, my wife and daughter STILL love me!!
// they just won't watch Quiz Show with me anymore!!!
