Title: Tonight's (Jan. 19) Jimmy Fallon
Post by: DjohnsonCB on January 19, 2011, 11:51:48 PM
Betty White is a guest on tonight's Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, during which they'll play Password on a near-exact duplicate of the 1960s set, complete with the words in pretty much the exact font from that version.

I haven't seen the promo, but I wonder if they're using the Saturday Night Live "Secret Word" set.

That'd be my guess as well, to go along with the imitation of the "Password" word graphics.

That was beautiful!  We need to get our Password back ... even if it's in a simpler form.  It just seemed silly to give it "Million Dollar" stakes, especially since they often picked contestants who didn't have a very strong command of the English language.

I love how spot-on they were, all the way down to showing the audience when the title was displayed.

Well played, Fallon. Well played. He has some pretty odd games that he plays with the audience and celebrities, but they're fun at the same time.

This was adorable and fun. Thanks Jimmy for reminding us that there's still some Password lovers out there.

For those who missed it, clips are up at the website (http://\"http://www.latenightwithjimmyfallon.com/blogs/2011/01/betty-white-plays-password/\").

For those who can't see it on the official website, it's on YouTube (and amusingly appears to have been uploaded by one of the contestants):

Jimmy Fallon is clearly a fan...and clearly awesome. Accurate set (later 1960s version), dead-right (albeit slightly scaled down) format for the era, Betty White playing the game again, an announcer whispering the passwords...they even got a bespectacled emcee! A very nice tribute to the CBS era and Allen Ludden.

As for the game itself, Betty White proved once again that she can tackle any Password format and emerge in victory...which doesn't surprise me in the least. :)

You are aware that that is Fallon's normally-bespectacled announcer / sidekick, Steve Higgins, right?

They need to have a stage carpenter come in with a router and cut some slots into the tabletop for discarding the used passwords ;-)

...as well as the "toaster" for the words in the bonus round!  :-D

I think these clips paint a clear picture as to why picking contestants at random is a bad idea.  That is, assuming, they wre actually audience members.

So, I finally got to watch it.  Great stuff -- a real treat to watch Betty play Password again.  She hasn't lost anything, either -- she was just as good of a player as she always has been.

Usually they are, but I give them a pass being as how they're probably nervous and have no clue how to play "Password", or that it was even a TV show. I doubt the staffers will go through the trouble of an audition for a quick little 5-minute game.

Anything to indicate that this was an actual contest as opposed to a skit for funsies? Because as a skit, it was terrific.

No, which surprised me, as Fallon usually at least gives away a T-shirt.

Wrong version. But they could get some French-fry holders from McDonald's to use as wallets.

And yeah, they should have given away a tsotchke or (gasp!) $100.

Now why would they do it off camera and make no mention of it on the air?

The point was "let's play a game of Password with Betty White, isn't that cool?", not "let's play an audience game where the sole object is to win a prize, isn't that cool?"

For time?  'Cause it was a door prize?  I dunno.  Just a thought.

I think you've just solved the Clock Game problem.
