How long will Johnny be filling in for Charlie on Wheel?
-
Who Knows?
-
Pat said a couple times that Johnny is subbing for the week... don't know how many eps. Charlie O taped before his death, but I am guessing Johnny Gilbert will be filling in for Charlie.

Sorry about the bad timing i did not know that he passed away recently.

Just today, apparently. Wikipedia doesn't even have it yet.

EDIT: Oops, there's already a thread in the obits section.

From Pat's Twitter account: "Johnny Gilbert (Jeopardy!) will fill in for a few weeks until successor is chosen. Again, I appreciate all the kind words."
How far in advance is Wheel taped?

It seems to vary. Back in March 2008 I was at a taping for an episode that aired exactly 8 weeks later, but according to his Twitter, the episode in which he made his first tweet aired only a month after it taped.

It varies, but I attended the first of two tapings on 8/13, and those shows aired 10/11-13.

And then I attended a July taping that aired in February. (Granted, it was on location)
Honestly, if there's the time and the money, I say have Pat and Vanna do the VO's.

During the days the show was fed on C-band satellite, they always had the taping date in the slate (oddly enough, Jeopardy did not). There was one time they were taping the Christmas week shows in late August.

When my episode was in the 6 eps/week rotation (5+1 later) in 2005, it was a good 7 weeks.

This year's Christmas Week shows were taped in September.

Pat and Vanna have done it before. When Jack Clark died, they did the fee plugs on repeat episodes he originally announced. Jack tried to do it for a few weeks but his voice was pretty much gone.
-
Are they dubbing in JG on these Vegas shows? Sure as heck seems like it. Really bad edit of them cutting away from Pat during the first prize plug. I hit my replay button on the DVR and seems like they did a soundbyte. I don't see why they didn't leave Charlie's shows alone, and air them unedited. It's the thing to do

Charlie voiced that week's slates, so I'm guessing so.

Gilbert was indeed dubbed in for the past week's Vegas shows. They also had to overdub any occurrence of Pat saying Charlie's name, of course.

Johnny Gilbert lite -- great taste, less filling

To be honest with you I'd just give the Wheel announcer's job to Johnny and let him do double duty on both shows.
A legendary announcer of 50 years experience. Quite simply, the best there is imho.
I actually find it a little insulting that somebody of Johnny's stature even has to try out for the show, he should just be given the job.

And we all know a man of 86 is itching to double his work load.

He may (or may not) have a lock on the job already, but corporations have to cover their asses these days.

And for all we know, he might not even want the job permanently.

I would be surprised if he would turn stuff down. I mean, after all, he did do "Quiz Kids Challenge" six years into J!

He'd have to work an extra, what, 38 days a year?
BTW, when does Rich Fields first episode air?

"Wheel" being the game with the heaviest travel schedule could make him not want it, either.

There aren't. They could cast anyone they want tomorrow and consider it a done deal. Given that he's 85, already has Jeopardy! and that Wheel does so much traveling, he indeed may not want it.

86...and frankly I didn't even think it would be a consideration for him. Clearly, he was able to step in easily for Harry but he's certainly not having trouble paying the bills at this point in his career. I've often thought his staying on for Jeopardy! has been along the same lines as Pardo staying on for SNL.
Maybe I'm wrong.

Good point. I had not factored in the travel schedule.
