Does anyone know why the first-taped episode, with Betty White, Leann Hunley, Charles Durning, and Charles Nelson Reilly, didn't air until October 10, 1988? I thought the daytime edition had returning champions.

If by daytime you mean NBC, it didn't have returning champions until late in its run, when it started adopting rules more like the eventual last syndicated version.
