Last week, I was at a campaign party where a longtime friend of mine is running for judge. At the party, his wife, also a longtime friend, is a big TPiR fan asked me if there was ever a situation where two contestants had a tie (both contestants' difference b/t the ARP and their bid was the same amount). If so, how was it resolved? If there's a YouTube clip, that would be even better.
Just curious.....
-
I think according to the rules, they both win their own showcase if both contestants' differences are the same. Don;t know if it happened, though.
-
It happened once on the Dennis James' version and they both won their showcases.
-
IIRC it occurred during the first season of Dennis James' TPIR. Both contestants won their respective showcases. I do not know if it happened since.
-
Thanks, everyone!

Indeed; and if both are under $250, they each win both Showcases. And if they were under $500 on an MDS, that means both Showcases & $1M for both of them.

Barker used to joke if that happened, "that would be the end of TPiR, and everyone would go their separate ways".

I realize this was meant as a joke...but MDSs run on a separate budget from the daytime show.

With the rarities happening on James' version (perfect Showcase bid, Showcase tie) it stinks that GSN couldn't air them.

The "Showcase Tie," did occur on the James' version, but I believe the first "Perfect Showcase Bid," was on the Barker daytime version!
If GSN never aired them, my best guess would be because each episode had a fur coat as a prize!

Makes sense...thing is, TPiR retrospectives have shown clips from fur episodes, i.e. the premiere. Interesting that something cool like that hasn't been included. Granted it's not as memorable as Pauline chasing Bob around the stage, it beats hearing "She came on down, and they came on out" for the 100th time.

I wouldn't be too shocked if they don't even know what episode it was on. In fact, I think I'd be more surprised if they do.

QFT. There's also plenty of other rarities on James' show -- the $200 Range Game rangefinder and Most Expensive on the Turntable spring to mind.

I can't speak for the Showcase tie, but at least some James episodes (such as #006N) were furless.

I certainly would have liked to have seen some of James' version on GSN, but I'm happy for what's out there. It was a must-see for me when it was in Prime Access.

Don't forget Clock Game with "The Red Zone" (the area from :02 to :00 was in red; if the player won both prizes with more than 2 seconds remaining, there was a $1000 bonus).

You believe correctly (the winning bid was $2200, and yes, the display did flash five zeroes).
Question about the syndicated James/Barker version: did it ever go off the air for one or more seasons before being cancelled? It aired for two years in San Francisco, but then the CBS affiliate that aired it stopped airing its game show strip, and it didn't return until a few years later. (I almost thought I was hearing things one night during the "gap" when, while watching another game show, I could faintly hear James playing "Any Number" in the background.)

No. New episodes were produced every year for the first eight seasons.

As well as Double Double Prices, Harriet, Ann Pennington, "Jenny the Artist", Puppy Pong, #(003N), the Showcases with about 8-10+ prizes, Vidal Sassoon's appearance, the "African/Indian Elephant" Showcase, the five classic games played in Dennis' last year (3 Strikes? Dice Game? Danger Price?! Hurdles?!)...and of course the infamous Cliff Hangers "Fritz" incident.
With all this cool stuff going on in Dennis' version, you have to wonder why Barker wants to keep it away from repeats.

I know what the hell I'm talking about. :-) One of the episodes that J-Shea recorded onto audio tape had a Showcase where Johnny introduced an African elephant that was painting something (probably on film, since Price + in-studio elephant = "fun"), followed by a trip to Africa. After Johnny described the next prize (a movie camera)...
Dennis: Hold it, Johnny, hold it.
Johnny: What did I do, what did I say?
Dennis: That's not an African elephant. That's an Indian elephant.
Johnny: So you want me to do something about that?
Dennis: That would be nice, yes.
Johnny: Then we'll also send them to INDIA!
This is one of the earliest (not to mention few) times that I know of pre-Season 37 where the host interacted in a Showcase, and one of the few Showcases pre-Davidson (that I know of, excluding April Fool's Day Showcases) that used such a "pre-planned, but looks like it isn't" element.

Then perhaps "debacle" wasn't the best choice of words.

Few? Obviously you didn't see much of Doug Davidson's version. The echo (echo echo) showcase is a great example, as is a showcase with quite a few double entendres, as Burton was caught reading a Harlequin romance-like novel when he was to be describing showcase prizes.

One of my favorites involved Burton trying to blackmail Doug Davidson in some sort of scandal, and Doug counter-blackmailing Burton by showing a pic of Rod Roddy. Don't remember too much else, except for the mock-horrified expression on Burton's face.
TPiR94 was honestly a pretty good show IMO. It was just a radical departure from what people were used to seeing in the morning for 22 years*.
*Okay, minus the few years it aired at 3pm EST. ;-)

the Showcases with about 8-10+ prizes,
Actually, many of the Dennis James version showcases only had two or three prizes. I remember one where a gentleman was bidding on a showcase with a fur coat and a car. He made some comment that the fur would be good for his girlfriend/wife and the car would be for him. He bid $2900 and it came to over $8000. I remember because it was the first showcase I'd seen on the show that cost that much and was very surprised - even for a nighttime show.

You may be thinking of the daytime show, as a $326/$325 pair happened late in Season 1. The nighttime tie, which I think Kenneth Johannessen told us about (although I can't find the post), had the difference as $537.
