The Daytime Emmy people announced the nominations for the Daytime Emmy Awards, which will air on CBS from Las Vegas this summer. This year, the number of nominations for both Outstanding Game/Audience Partication Show and Outstanding Game Show Host have been upped to five.
Outstanding Game/Audience Participation Show...
Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?
Cash Cab
Jeopardy!
The Price is Right
Wheel of Fortune
Outstanding Game Show Host...
Ben Bailey (Cash Cab)
Wayne Brady (LMAD)
Pat Sajak (WOF)
Alex Trebek (Jeopardy!)
Carnie Wilson (Newlywed Game)
WOF also received a nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Lighting Direction, competing against Oprah, Ellen and The View.
Full nominee list can be found here...
http://www.emmyonline.org/mediacenter/dayt...ominations.html (http://\"http://www.emmyonline.org/mediacenter/daytime_37th_nominations.html\")
For some reason, the Outstanding Achievement in Makeup nominees crack me up. Here, the voters must decide who's the toughest person to doll up -- Tyra Banks, Barbara Walters or Pat Robertson. Can I vote "none of the above" and move on?
JD
-
Hey, Price is nominated again! Good for them.
-
Carnie got nominated. Very interesting and (rightfully so) good candidates.
-
Interesting that Wheel and Jeopardy! are the only ones with nominations for host and show. Even more interesting that Millionaire didn't throw its hat into the ring.

Wheel of Fortune
Which show gets your vote? Not which show is your favorite; which show is worthy of this award? I would vote for any of them except TPIR and Cash Cab.
Wayne Brady as Outstanding Emcee? I think not.

and Cash Cab.
Funny, that's the show I would vote for. I think its remarkably well put-together and the game is fun and engaging without giving away oodles of cash.
-
If Cash Cab were not on the list would you vote for TPIR, Mr. Odor? Do you think it stands out from the other shows except Cash Cab?
-
Do you think it stands out from the other shows except Cash Cab?
I'm not Mr. Odor, but I'll answer. I enjoy all of the shows on the list. 5th Grader is lather, rinse and repeat for the most part. But as compared to the other long-running shows Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!, Price has done more to try to stay fresh and bring new life into the show by trying new things once in a while. So yes, I do think it stands out from the other shows.

Have the gimmicks they've tried during the past few years (e.g. Drewcases) really resulted in an outstanding show? Regardless of the fact that he's not up for an Emmy, they're still saddled with an emcee who can't even get the rules to the games right (yup Mr. Raygor, there's another swipe at your pal Drew). A case could be made that Jeopardy! deserves an award for being a great show without having to gum up the works with gimmicks.

Stay classy, Mr. Moderator.

Geez, am I the only one who took Chris's question as objective, and not as an attempt to bash The Price is Right or Drew Carey?

I honestly thought about that when you posted your question in an earlier post. To me, TPiR still has a lot of kinks to iron out, it just seems all over the place at times. So no, I probably would not give them the Emmy because it doesn't appear as polished on some days, compared to Wheel or J!
5th Grader is decent enough, and fairly polished. Don't watch Cash Cab enough to judge, but it is a fun enough game show from the eps. I've seen, and it has shown how to do a game show without a big, fancy studio set. The disco lights provide just enough chrome for what could be a pedestrian trivia game.
However, out of the five, I can say J!, and to a lesser extent, Wheel are more or less solid all the way around. Additions that compliment game play without distracting from it, sharp, consistent production, and so forth. Out of the five, J! (and again to a lesser extent Wheel) is a great example of a modern-day game show that still properly utilizes a lot of old-school production values you just don't see anymore. They're not nominated this year, but I'd say Millionaire is another good example. Honestly, I wish more games were produced like those three, although I sometimes question some of Wheel's puzzles.
To me, an Emmy award-winning game show should be just as enjoyable without the glitz, chrome, or gimmicks. When I watch an 80s or 90s episode of TPiR, I get that impression. Nowadays, I don't know what I'll get at 11am. That can be a good thing at times...if I'm judging for Emmy-worthy material, I'm not so sure.
TPiR's outside-the-box thinking has gotten a couple of laughs out of me. However, if the production is still all over the place, I'm crossing it off my ballot list.
-
Geez, am I the only one who took Chris's question as objective, and not as an attempt to bash The Price is Right or Drew Carey?
You just might be ;-)
There is "bashing" and there is reasoned criticism. Imagine being in an office full of producers and directors each with decades of experience behind them. If they don't like an emcee you're going to hear reasoned criticism and not fanb0i rants. Trust me on that one. Matter of fact, I have spoken to a producer with decades of experience behind him specifically about Drew and TPIR and what do you think I got? Reasoned criticism!
I agree with all of the remarks about Jeopardy! For one thing it doesn't try to pander to the younger set. For another thing, the quality of the material and contestants is consistently high after all these years. Then there is Alex who is as solid as the rock of Gibraltar, as fresh on the 10th show taped as on the first. So it gets my vote.
To me, an Emmy award-winning game show should be just as enjoyable without the glitz, chrome, or gimmicks.
Imagine playing a game in that same room full of seasoned producers and directors without even the physical prizes being present, no music, no Drewcases, no bling. That will tell you whether a game will play or not. The exceptions would be Cash Cab which can't really be done in an office, and Mindreaders which played well in the office but sucked on the air.

For the record: I didn't take offense to it either.
That personal snipe towards me wasn't called for. I respectfully ask for an apology.
/Can just we come to compromise?

If you saw the May 10 episode of The Price is Right, you'd realize that it is no longer "outstanding". It doesn't matter if the host is saying "Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price" instead of ARP, or if he garbles the rules, but when your Executive Producer knowingly puts a prize he can't afford in a game that is dependent on luck far more than the other car games, that's just piss poor planning.
Fifth Grader has ten (or eleven) fairly easy questions per show. Wheel of Fortune insults my intelligence, my patience and my eardrums when I watch.
Cash Cab has an interesting game and fun material. It is always exciting to watch and fun to play along with. Jeopardy refuses to pander to the dummkopfs by having consistently difficult material, and for not wading too far into the Ocean of Gimmickry.
So yes, I think Cash Cab and Jeopardy! stand out from the field, and I would be pleased to find out that one of them won.
-
My vote goes to Cash Cab, for the simple reason that there are too many outside occurences that the producers have relatively no control over (though I'm sure there have been a few "fares" that didn't even make it to the game-playing stage for one reason or another), whereas in the other shows, the contestants are cherry picked either for their age, looks or brains (not neccessarily for all 3).
-

What was the prize, its price, and the game?
Any producer who sends a contestant to the Plinko board with just one chip and makes the audience boo Plinko has his head squarely up his arse. Want a TPIR clip to show at the Emmy ceremony? Show the audience booing Plinko! Combine that with the abject lack of creativity in the deals on his other show ("Do you want the cash or the curtain?") and he should be looking for another job, preferably in the aluminum siding industry (OMG I bashed Mikey!).
Wheel of Fortune insults my intelligence, my patience and my eardrums when I watch.
My eardrums feel the same way.
in the other shows, the contestants are cherry picked either for their age, looks or brains (not neccessarily for all 3)
Contestants have been cherry picked on just about every game show for decades. largely for appearance and personality. Just sayin'.

Just because I'm curious, why not?
-
What was the prize, its price, and the game?
A $27500 restored 1966 Pontiac GTO was offered as the prize in Spelling Bee. Mike nearly finished the job when the contestant missed two of the three play-in items, but she got the last one, and her cards were R-A-C. Ta da.
-
Maybe David Shaw lost the ebay auction for the '66 GTO?
It's a JOKE, folks!

Not to mention the cluster-you-know-what that went on in the studio when they tried to exercise damage control by 'cheapening' a showcase later in that taping. Long story short, they spent over 45 minutes of studio time and destroyed most of Door #1's lightbulbs in an effort to save $10,000.

I think that the love Cash Cab gets from the Academy has much more to do with the production challenges of creating a game show that's played inside a taxi. They're not really concerned that much with the game that's being played.
-

Thus costing themselves more than $10,000 in studio time and repairs to the set in all likelihood. Priceless.

I have to applaud you Brandon for bringing that rare-but-welcome TPIR opinion - that the show is still doing things right, while having room for improvement. There's a certain cluster of people almost too quick to praise the new show any time they do something different. Namely, if you were tired of Barker and/or the line-up of fans at G-R or something, then you're more likely to come on here and tell us how much you love their latest set or rule change, calling it an interesting breath of fresh air.
I can find fault and praise for both eras of the show. But if we're all watching the same thing, I'm frankly surprised at the reaction sometimes. I too appreciate the newness of it, but they've done some misguided things in the process. I think it might be interesting (perhaps elsewhere, so not to derail this thread) to see some of the people who champion either side share their dislike for the show they favor, and give praise to the era they don't. (In my case, I'd say the prizes were almost embarrassingly stagnant in the Barker years, and I like the new home base introduced this season.)

Price does have its problems, but compared to the first two seasons, I think it has made significant progress. I could see it getting a nomination (and possibly a win) in two years or so, but they still have a couple wrinkles to iron out.

Even more interesting that Millionaire didn't throw its hat into the ring.
And as usual, Family Feud was AWOL. You'd think they would give O'Hurley at least one nomination before he shuffles off the stage for good. Nothing for the Misters Foxworthy and Mandel either.
Also, this year's "Lifetime Acheivment" honor goes to soap opera creator Agnes Nixon. I was hoping for Monty Hall or Chuck Barris to get it this year. Maybe there will be a surprise honor for either of those men (or hopefully both) during their "Creative Arts" ceremony this year.....
Cordially,
Tammy

You have to submit something to be nominated. As far as I know, this version has never submitted anything for nomination, just like all the other Fremantle syndicated shows.

It's easy for ME to say no, but you'd just have to take my word for it, wouldn't you? I absolutely got your pedestrian humor. (See what I did back to you there?) I still wanted to make the larger point about why Cash Cab keeps getting nominated, despite it being a show we as a group don't talk about much. Shouldn't have used your quote to do it, though, that was definitely my bad.

Agreed. Given Clark's career and Seacrest's resume' (not to mention the New Year's Eve specials), it makes perfect sense!

And, in the entirety of the tribute segment, the closest we got to a mention of Pyramid was in Donny Osmond's taped piece when he said "you taught me to host a classic game show."
It was all about Bandstand.

That kinda annoyed me (just a tad), being Bandstand mostly aired on Saturdays, while Pyramid was at least a daily daytime show. Would've been nice to see Pyramid get a little love, but oh well...
Come to think of it, what was up with the tribute being so early?
-
That was one amazing tribute piece. Yes, I would have wanted more of an all-around tribute, but the way they took it was great in itself.
I really preferred it early. The first fifteen minutes were tedious as all get out.
BTW: Cash Cab wins.
/Donny: you should have learned more from Dick about that game show....

And, Cash Cab makes it three in a row as best Game Show.

Cash Cab wins again. Is this two or three in a row?
-
Third.
It's a good show but Emmy worthy? Eh.

Yeah, it's a minor downer, but American Bandstand was essentially what got Dick Clark the tribute. It was going to get the brunt of the attention regardless.
I guess the next question is do the Grammys follow suit?
-
Are you asking whether the Grammys will honor the guy who created the American Music Awards because ABC couldn't get the rights to the Grammys?

Also, one of of the show's presenters that night did mention Clark as one of those of winning the Best Game Show Host Award before. While it was quite understandable from the ceremony's point of view to praise him solely associated with Bandstand, it was a bit of a disappointment (but should have expected that) from the tribute to him by leaving out Pyramid. Clark did look pretty good sitting in the audience, alongside with his wife Kari.
-
Like much of the show, it was a good way to use the Vegas talent they had at hand. Not a soap fan, but watching it for game and talk categories (Were there any childrens programming awards?), it was OK. My biggest beef was the producer using the show to sell his D-grade syndicated shows and stars.
But considering the awards almost weren't going to be televised at all, after the debacle last year on the CW, I guess we should be glad it's been given two hours on a network.

Maybe you're a bit too young - remember, I'm a geezer - but Bandstand did start as a daily afternoon show, first in Philly and then picked up by ABC. I'm JUST old enough to remember the daily Bandstand before it switched to Saturdays.
Of course, add producing and Dick Clark could earn about three lifetime achievement awards...
