About Game Shows (http://\"http://gameshows.about.com/b/2010/01/28/neil-patrick-harris-to-host-the-cube-for-cbs.htm\") is reporting that CBS is piloting an American version of the popular British game The Cube. The news was released last week when a ticketing site sought an audience for an American pilot, but now we know that CBS is flying out current How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris (a well-known game show fan) to host the pilot. He'll host the pilot and then CBS will decide what to do with it. NBC's clone Minute To Win It is still scheduled to premiere in March.

is for CBS, and your host is Neil Patrick Harris! (http://\"http://buzzerblog.flashgameshows.com/neil-patrick-harris-hosts-the-cube-pilot-for-cbs/\") This sounds like a great combo to me (this would be a good complement to CBS' summer schedule I thought- maybe before or after a Big Brother episode)

Ooh. Like that a LOT.

I hope they aren't trying to replace As The World Turns with this. Personally I wouldn't watch it as a daily, but a high-stakes summer series? Sign me up please!
/CBS - take a peek at Pointless for your daytime slot

Approves.

God, I would. Best British export since Poker Face, for my money.

From what I saw of the UK version, if CBS can execute that the same way, I think a half-hour version could actually work, even with a top prize of $50,000. Just make a variety of stunts. Pair it up with Pyramid and you have just as much drama as As the World Turns ever brought.
Then again, all that drama could mean having to take an extra pair of shorts to work...TMI?
-
Neil Patrick Harris is DA MAN - good move by CBS.
-
Wait, no trash talk? No fire spurting from the floor? No bug-eating? *And* Neil Patrick Harris? This can't possibly work.
Honestly, this is one of the better ideas I've ever heard. Can't wait!

The format is just Big Money BtC in a box but NPH makes the whole affair seem hip. Savvy move on CBS's part.

Oh, did you see it?

From Bother's Bar, the first reports on tonight's taping are starting to come in:
http://www.bothersbar.co.uk/?p=558#comments (http://\"http://www.bothersbar.co.uk/?p=558#comments\")
Alex Davis reports on Twitter that the money chain $1,000; $2,000; $10,000; $25,000; $75,000; $200K, then $500K.

Just thinking: Would this make NPH the first openly gay host?

Don't think so; Charles Nelson Reilly did Sweethearts in 1988.

"Openly gay" is a different thing than the wink-wink of a CNR or a Paul Lynde. There have been quite a few gay game show hosts before CNR. Merv Griffin, for example.

This is Matt's precise point.
-
I would assume that NPH would be the first person who you could unequivocally describe as "openly gay" at the time of hosting a game show.
If you're getting into the "not shouting from the rooftops but not trying to fool anyone" area by including the '80s CNR, then you have to get into whether or not The Mole counts as a game show and the conundrum of sexual identity that is Anderson Cooper.
-
And why does any of this matter?
-
And why does any of this matter?
Oh, I think it's every bit as relevant a discussion point as "first female host" or "first black host". I think the very fact that we can talk about it casually speaks volumes.

Please. Some of my theater friends in NYC would like to have a word with you.

Wow, New York magazine gets it about as wrong as humanly possible: (http://\"http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2010/01/neil_patrick_harris_will_pay_y.html\")
Neil Patrick Harris has found his calling — hosting a game show. CBS will premiere Minute to Win It on March 14 with NPH handling hosting duties. The show is based on a successful British show called The Cube, which places contestants in a chamber designed to induce stress where they're challenged to complete tasks for money. When they leave the chamber, NPH will promptly make fun of them.
*facepalm*

This is just ONE of the reasons magazine sales as a whole have fallen! If they don't tell the truth, they get the story wrong!

Wow... I need to check a picture of Guy Fieri... are they that similar?
-
Not unless Guy has lost both his goatee and 50 pounds.
And even then, not so much.

CBS will premiere Minute to Win It on March 14... The show is based on a successful British show called The Cube, which places contestants in a chamber designed to induce stress where they're challenged to complete tasks for money.
Not to mention they even got the network wrong!
My observation from viewing the "Minute to Win It" promo is that yes, some of the games will be on a par with those used by "The Cube". For example, trying to throw water bottles (which I assume are full) from a distance, with the goal of making at least two land in a standing position on a table.
YMMV.
-
Buzzerblog believes that the show is a go... (http://\"http://buzzerblog.flashgameshows.com/\")..nothing official yet however..
-
Looks like the show might be a go for series, according to this post (http://\"http://buzzerblog.flashgameshows.com/rumor-control-the-cube-greenlit-by-cbs-now-casting/\") at Buzzerblog:
This new notice says it’s a, “New studio game show for CBS where contestants have to do seemingly simple tasks in a pressure-cooker environment. Come test your skills to travel and a chance to win cash prizes!!” To further the argument it also states, “All you need is nerves of steel and determination. NO physical fitness or general knowledge is needed.” ... Adding to it the email address to apply is, “cbsgameshowuk@gmail.com” and what other CBS game show, either being looked at now or that recently shot a pilot, tapes in London? None except The Cube.
And here's the Craigslist casting call:

Edit: Ha, looks like weaklink75 and I both had the same thought at the same time.

Yeah- just got home and saw it. It's a good move doing the filming in London actually-probably less expensive getting the contestants and family to travel there than to build a set for the first set of shows at least..
I wonder if NPH's Twitter (http://\"http://twitter.com/ActuallyNPH\") will have something in the next few days? He seems to be a good fit, and respects the genre...
