While I haven't seen the Price 7,000 Episodes Celebration yet, Rich and Drew's Twitter accounts have mentioned that Rich Fields has announced just over 1,000 shows. How many have Johnny and Rod each announced for comparison?
I know that Johnny announced from 1972-1985 and Rod from about late-1985 until 2003. Anybody able to offer a rough guess?
Just curious.

I think for the first several years of Johnny's era, the show aired year-round, right? So maybe about 225 episodes, give or take, for the first 9 seasons is 2,025. From 10-13, maybe 190 per season which is 760 (2,785) Add in the episodes he did for season 14, and I'd say a little more than 2,800.
From Rod's era on, I'm guessing they did maybe, what, 175 shows a season, for 18 or so seasons, which is 3,150?
So Johnny: 2,800
Rod: 3,150
Rich: 1,050
All give or take...

What about syndicated nighttime episodes for Johnny?

I'm not sure if that also counts for the subs after Johnny's and Rod's death (Bob Hilton, Gene Wood, Burton Richardson, Randy West, et al.)

I'm sure you weren't. I saw no kinds of promotion whatsoever, unlike the crazy media hullabaloo about the 5,000th show.
Wasn't really the 7,000th, anyway. They passed that presumably over 100 shows ago.

I had no idea, either...I was surprised that they made such a hoopla about it, though. Their 7500th show I think would be a more noteworthy milestone.
One tweak they did on the show that wouldn't be so bad to keep permanently would be to raise the stakes on Lucky Seven:
Instead of playing with seven $1 bills, bump it up to seven $100 bills (the $1000 packs were overkill). If you're going to throw a $1000 "bonus" every time someone wins on Clock Game, you should give a good Lucky Seven player a chance to win up to $600 extra, or whatever they have left.
Compared to some of the other money tweaks they've made over the last few years, $600 is a drop in the bucket.

Drop in the bucket for the overall prize budget, yes. But they're already giving the winner in Lucky Seven a car, versus two sub-$1,000 prizes in Clock Game.

Does 7,000 episodes really deserve a media hullabaloo, though? Yeah, it's a lot of shows, but it's not exactly a milestone (e.g. 100, 500, 1000, 5000, 10000).

Wrong, but an extremely common misconception. The show only ran year-round during the half-hour era. I'd have sworn I posted this list on here once, but I'll be danged if I can find it, so...
Season 1: 254 - 254
Season 2: 229 - 483
Season 3: 253 - 736
Season 4: 214 - 950
Season 5: 213 - 1,163
Season 6: 228 - 1,391
Season 7: 209 - 1,600
Season 8: 191 - 1,791
Season 9: 205 - 1,996
Season 10: 196 - 2,192
Season 11: 208 - 2,400
Season 12: 197 - 2,597
Season 13: 195 - 2,792
Season 14: 186 - 2,978
Season 15: 191 - 3,169
Season 16: 186 - 3,355
Season 17: 184 - 3,539
Season 18: 177 - 3,716
Season 19: 186 - 3,902
Season 20: 178 - 4,080
Season 21: 177 - 4,257
Season 22: 185 - 4,442
Season 23: 183 - 4,625
Season 24: 183 - 4,808
Season 25: 185 - 4,993
Season 26: 184 - 5,177
Season 27: 175 - 5,352
Season 28: 165 - 5,517
Season 29: 164 - 5,681
Season 30: 175 - 5,856
Season 31: 175 - 6,031
Season 32: 175 - 6,206
Season 33: 175 - 6,381
Season 34: 175 - 6,556
Season 35: 175 - 6,731
Season 36: 190 - 6,921
Season 37: 191 - 7,112
I'll answer the rest of the question in another post so the darn thing doesn't get even more cluttered.

Here's a list of how many daytime shows every announcer has done as of today's 7,147th episode. (This doesn't include the week of 494xK, which isn't really supposed to have aired yet.)
Johnny Olson -- 2,837
Rod Roddy -- 3,094
Rich Fields -- 989
Gene Wood -- 19
Rich Jefferies -- 7
Bob Hilton -- 24
Burton Richardson -- 90
Paul Boland -- 5
Randy West -- 42
Daniel Rosen -- 10
Art Sanders -- 10
Roger Rose -- 5
Don Bishop -- 5
Jim Thornton -- 10
(Surprising fact I discovered while doing this: Rod only did 257 more daytime shows than Johnny.)
-
Very interesting, and thanks for posting both lists! Seems my math was much closer than I expected. :-)
/Would've won both showcases with a Johnny bid
//Overbid with Rod
///Huh?
And although 7,000 is worthy of a press release, I wouldn't say it's extremely newsworthy, esp. since the show became the longest-running game show more than two decades ago...

I wouldn't think so, either...but they've already done more commercials for the show in general in the two years Drew's been hosting than they did in the last 15 years or so of the Barker era, and CBS went out of its way to advertise the "6,000th" show, so I was surprised there wasn't more hype over this one.
-
Now that we've done the announcers, does anyone want to estimate how many shows each director of 'TPIR' has done?

I just watched show 7000 on cbs.com... I very much dug their use of "classic" showcase music.

I wonder if the reason why CBS listed this as the 7,000th episode is because it's the 7,000th aired episode, and not the 7,000th taped episode?

It has nothing to do with that (and taping order doesn't usually have anything to do with anything). The show's own episode count is wrong and has been for many years. There are 146 more daytime shows than they think there are.
-
So at which point was it that they lost count and began to act like those other daytime episodes that they didn't count never existed?
And BTW, do unaired episodes, as well as those 2007 pilot episodes with John O'Hurley and Doug Davidson count?
-

It seems like it's happened a number of times over the years...at various points, they've been ridiculously far ahead of the actual count, almost right on, and ridiculously far behind. The earliest mention of a count that I know of came when Bob declared the Season 4 finale to be the 1,000th episode; it was actually the 950th.
And I don't get where you're coming up with "acting like other episodes never existed." They do not believe that the episode count is screwed up -- and you can hardly blame them, considering how nutty the claim sounds. It's something I regret that we were never able to convince Roger of.

Nothing that's not an actual show counts, and I don't include the intentionally unaired episodes because I doubt they were ever intended to be counted. It's easier to just say there are two third episodes.

So I guess their own records somehow became mixed up many years ago, nobody caught the error and they've been going on the wrong numbers ever since? Still seems strange that could happen. I f you have records indicating the exact number, you'd figure they would too; or would be able to figure it out. Don't they keep records of how many shows they've done each season? Don't they have an archive somewhere with tape numbers on them? (OK, I know 7000 is a lot of tapes!)
I guess the lower numbers in the early years (half-hour) were because of Watergate.

They do. In fact, I got all my episode numbers and airdates out of their records several years ago.

I think Roger once said that it was CBS's responsibility to track how many shows they'd done...so evidently, someone was doing it (although not very well!), but not anyone associated with Goodson-Todman.

Actually, I think that started with someone looking at the production number (#2005D) of the Season 4 finale and misunderstanding it. I still don't get how it managed to fluctuate every time they mentioned it in the early '80s, though.
-

Wrong! Regardless of what Roger said it is most definitely the production company's responsibility to keep track of the shows they've done.

Emcee auditions do not count as episodes.
