Title: Theme song question
Post by: Twentington on November 05, 2009, 02:05:42 PM
I was just watching a 1996 college ep of Wheel of Fortune on YouTube, and I noticed that they opened with a marching-band version of "Changing Keys" (which used the original melody, not the more "stretched out" melody that was already in place by that point), and used some marching band music for the closing. I think they've a fight song-type closing theme for more recent college weeks as well. (Who composed these anyway?)

That got me thinking: are there any other times when a show used a totally different theme and/or music package specifically for a certain "outside the norm" week? The only other example I can think of offhand is The Joker's Wild swiping the Break the Bank '76 theme for the $1,000,000 tournament.

(I suppose you could argue that the "hobba heeba" version of the All Star Blitz theme was the beginning of "Our Music Director Is on Crack Week.")

Not necessarily "totally different" for either case, but TPIR used a redone version of the theme for the Halloween special this past week. Wheel had its theme played by the Radio City Music Hall organists when they did their show there in '88[?].

"Debt" also had a marching band playing its theme for College Week.

Jeopardy uses the Rock & Roll theme as bumpers on certain weeks. Win, Lose or Draw had a separate theme for weeks in Hawaii (which is available on TVPMM).

Yep, November '88 in fact.

Also, regarding the J! theme, I forgot about that one! They use R&RJ!'s theme during teen weeks usually (such as, um, this week). They've also had the think music played on an organ, sung by the Whiffenpoofs and possibly other variations — and apparently one time, they had a choir sing "Silent Night" instead of the think music!

I'm trying to think if "Hollywood Squares" had a different theme for the "Storybook Squares" weeks.  I know the intro was different.

For the earlier series, I recall reading that a variation of the "Silly Song" was used. The later series still used "Merrill and Bob's Theme".

For Pep Rally Week on $ale in 1988, they used a marching band version of its main theme for the opening sequence.

Sounds like we have a marching band version of the GUTS theme in the All-Star Special (http://\"http://gameshow.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=19049\") (after the main intro).

...which reminds me that this was also the case for the 2 wks of shows WoF did there in Nov. 88 (during the opening, anyway).

Lingo altered its theme song for the Hula and Fiesta weeks it did back in '06.

On the Karn Feud, they put aside whichever theme they were using regularly for music fitting with the special.  I've only noticed this done on O'Hurley's version during Halloween episodes.

Now that you mention it, Feud's a good candidate for this thread. O'Hurley weeks with celebrity lookalikes use generic "Hollywood" music as the theme. The Combs version used the Illinois Instant Riches theme for a week with male and female hard-bodies. They also used a library piece called Stiletto Heels (which has since shown up on TPIR) for a week pitting Playboy Playmates against a group of male actor "hunks."

Wow. As often as I watch Feud, I'm surprised I didn't notice these ones.

Combs' version also used another stock piece for a week in the 92-93(?) season that featured Atlantic City showgirls competing against Vegas ones...in addition, Karn's version used some stock disco music for their Feb. 03 "Village People vs. Disco Divas" week.

Was wondering what the title of that piece was...thanks for resolving a long-unsolved mystery! LOL...and yeah, they used it on TPiR for "night on the town"-themed Showcases, as I recall (one of which was on the primetime 25th Anniv. Special).

EDIT: It's available for your listening pleasure on Network Music's site (http://\"http://www.killertracks.com\")...this version includes a bass solo in the intro and middle sections not heard in the edited version used on FF and TPiR.

TPIR used the Marines Corp. Band for the opening on the Veteran's Day special last week.  That was a nice touch.

And "YMCA" during the credits.

A lot of shows like using Christmas music under the credits on the final show before Christmas. The final network episode of "Newlywed Game" used "Sleigh Ride" by Leroy Anderson during the full credit crawl.

"Jeopardy!" also had an in-house pianist play five differently-arranged versions of "Think!" for a celebrity week in New York City once.  They all sounded pretty cool, I would love to hear them again one day

They also had a pianist play the tune on-board the Orient Express fora  special "FJ!" clue.

There's a Christmas episode of Wheel of Fortune from the Woolery years floating around that does the same thing.
