from the state that gave you "Mystery Science Theatre 3000", "Let's Bowl" and (sadly) "Mall Masters at Mall of America" we present "21 Cards" which was taped at Mystic Lake Casino Hotel in the suburb of Prior Lake.
Hosted by my buddy Mike Rylander it features a contestant facing 21 giant cards (and 12 beautiful models) 19 of them contain cash and two are jokers. Keep getting money and you play on, find a joker and you lose everything. Yeah I hear the DOND rip-off complainers here but trust me it's better produced than many of the GSN originals and Mike is a better host than many we've seen over the years.
Before the game starts the contestant places an "insurance card" over one of the 21 cards. If they pick a joker they will win what is under the insurance card. If they covered the 2nd joker with it, they win $5,000.
Of course at several points in the game an offer will be made to leave the show with an "offer". Take it and the game is over.
It's running weekly at 6pm Saturday on the CW, ch. 23 in Minneapolis. It seriously is worth a look if you're local.

From the clips and pictures, man, you're right, that's one impressive operation for a small station in a local market. Certainly doesn't hurt to have the backing of a casino. The DoND influence of the staging is a little too much in-your-face for my tastes, especially since the game sounds like it's a little bit different than the better-known show. Too bad they couldn't have come up with something a little more original.

So wait....you designate one card as your insurance card, and if it's a joker, you win whatever's underneath....I got that much. But how are you covering the second joker if you only have one insurance card?

If you cover one joker and pick the other joker, then you win $5,000, since your insurance card was a joker. At least as far as I know.

Nonono, I just figured it out. It's a consolation prize. (And I was just as puzzled as you guys were when I first read this this morning.)
You put the insurance card on #2. You flip cards, and eventually you flip a joker. Awww, cue Mr. Wonka. So we flip over #2. Behind #2 is $750! So you win that. Yay!
Later, the next player puts it on #12. They play and flip over the joker on their first card. Nuts! So we check #12, and it's the other joker. They win $5,000! Yay!
It's basically the exact inverse of The Case You Picked. You don't flip that one until you lose.

Right You Are!
Finding the first joker wipes away you're winnings and you leave with what is under the "insurance card" (BTW all dollar amounts are in the $100-$2500 range). If you have that second joker under your insurance card you leave with $5,000. It has happened.
If you play a "perfect game" you would have accumulated $10,000 at which point "Mystic Lake Casino Hotel" (plugged throughout) throws in an extra 5k for a total of $15,000.
I haven't asked Mike but I've got to think this is a format the creator is trying out and would eventually license it to other casinos. They got 2500 people in for each of these tapings so I would think any casino would like that.

What happens if you pick the "Tic" and the "Tac"? It's another implementation of Russian roulette right out of the Barry & Enright play book.
Didn't I test a game during the summer of last year which had a little lot more dimension to it and which will likely never see the light of day?

Although it's sorta like a higher stakes version of "Beat The Dragon", it looks fun. For such a small station, this IS impressive.

Not only is it the state that gave you MST3K, but CW23 used to be KTMA TV 23, the channel that brought you the show in the first place.
Nice to see Minnesota continuing to make local programming. (I miss "Let's Bowl", too...)

Tim Scott who was executive producer with Let's Bowl, also was involved with Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Recently I saw a Twin Cities edition of "Bowling for Dollars" from the 70s. The kids on "21 Cards" are much better at sucking life out of randomly selected Minnesotans than former Channel 5 sportscaster Tom Ryther was. That's not to say they're amazing, but, you know, imagine extras from "Fargo" on a game show and you can imagine what they're up against.
Also, the consolation prize on B4$ was one dollar a pin, while it was around $250 on 21C. Apparently tribal casinos will throw for bigger prizes than the neighborhood lanes did.

I have to agree. The hosts on 21 Cards could tone it down a bit.

It might help if someone could coax Natalie not to wrinkle her nose every time she throws it back to Wally. That said, it's a hard thing to tone it down for the camera when also playing to an enormous showroom.
