I was watching an old episode of Pictionary on the VCR the other day, and started listing shows in which a celebrity or player was physically injured, but the game went on with them.
1) Pictionary -- Bill Maher gets his nose broken by Eric Estrada...The game resumes with Maher icing his nose the rest of the game.
2) TPIR -- A contestant blows out his knee during the Dice Game...he was sporting crutches by the end of the show.
3) Whew -- A detective nicknamed Blackie blows out his knee after winning the main match...He comes back (to a Pomp & Circumstance return -- literally) a few weeks later to run the Gauntlet, and wins the $25K on his first attempt.
Others???

Double Dare's Pie in the Pants - pies + G.I. Joes = broken nose
-
How about to the host?
Of course, that could only be "The Big Falldown."

I remember reading that on Double Dare Deluge back in the day, which was before there was a Nick GAS to rerun these shows. Unless there were separate incidents, the kid in question actually caught a soldier to the forehead which cut him open. I can't recall seeing any blood or anything (I could always pull the tape), but during the commercial he was fitted with a band-aid, and Marc pointed it out. This was in 1987, and I believe the New York SSDD.
Can't forget Dr. Joyce's bum ankle on the one existing episode of Showoffs. Host injuries, there are plenty, but that might be a separate thread. :) Bob Barker's hosted with a broken toe and tennis elbow, and Ray Combs bled from the forehead after a contestant hit him with a microphone on Family Challenge, among several others.

Maybe there were two incidents or maybe I'm meshing two. I really do seem to recall an incident where a contestant was replaced following a commercial break.

That would be the G.I. Joe-broken-nose incident.

If you guys are citing this from seeing it yourself, my apologies, but here's the text from Double Dare Deluge (which is still up (http://\"http://members.fortunecity.com/gameshowplaza/doubledaredeluge/ddintro.htm\") on a new provider) from which you may be "recalling" the story:
Someone on the show wanted to come up with a stunt along the similar lines of "Pie in Your Pants," except with no mess (this occurred in 1987 or so, when about the only thing messy in DD was the obstacle course). The thought of using G.I. Joe action figures seemed to work right with kids as well. Well, these two ideas combined into what would become the most hazardous stunt ever attempted on the show. One player would be catapulting the G.I. Joe's, while the other would be catching them. The stunt was played smoothly apparently, and nothing appeared wrong while they went to a commercial. But as they came back, Marc announced that the player who caught the action figures accidentally caught one in the face, and suffered a broken nose. Strangely enough, the player was replaced by another one (a la American Gladiators) and the show continued, escaping a very ill-conceived idea.
And going back into my unpublished archive of Every Physical Challenge Ever, the stunt I have on tape used Flying Zucchini Brothers toys. Both could have happened, sure, but I doubt they would have attempted the stunt in another permutation after just one injury. I imagine the story above is from childhood memories, with some of the details fudged up over time. Just look at how people thought Telephone Game was played on The Price is Right before there was videotape evidence to correct it. It was wildly different, and the only thing Chris Jaunsen messed up (if indeed this only happened once) was the type of action figure, and the result.

Dr. Joyce Brothers on Showoffs.
-
Reportedly there was a player injured during a dangerous stunt on Anything You Can Do, which is one reason why Gene Wood quit after the first year of the show.
-
Countless injuries on American Gladiators...
Battle Dome in it's two season run, had some brutal injuries. I remember one player who dislocated his thumb, and willfully popped it back into place. Jake Fury broke his ankle on the Battle Wheel.
-
The UK version of Catch Phrase in it's first episode of the revamped 2000 series, host Nick Weir broke his leg.
-
Although this contestant didn't continue, on the Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? episode "Auld Lang Gone," contestant Jasmine Doman broke her arm in the bonus round and was replaced by Ed Mann, who won. The episode was never aired.

Not so much an injury, but a sudden illness happened on Dawson FF
An elderly guy was a member of one of the families, and he was fine during the first round. During the commercial break, the man fell ill, and sat on a stool for the rest of the show. Richard pointed out he was ill, and when Richard approached the ill man for an answer, he was clearly not in the right state, looking tired and a little disoriented. Richard demanded "Don't give him a strike!" and went on to the next player.
I also remember a guy on Password Plus had back problems and eventually had to stop playing. I don't recall if he returned to play.
Ross Schaeffer took a tumble on the steps during an intro on MG 90, and was apparently not injured, but one of the panelists mocked his fall by sporting bandages.
A Name that Tune contestant lost her footing when being overly excited on the Lange NTT. Ironically the song title was "Please Help Me I'm Falling"
-
Didn't someone hurt themselves playing Dice Game on TPIR once?
-
The first one I could think of was on Combs Family Challenge...during a stunt, one of the kids ran past Ray and knocked the microphone back into his forehead and cracked it open. They surprisingly (at least to me) not only replayed the incident in slo-mo, but showed Ray with the bloody forehead immediately afterwards.
He took it in good spirits, though...got bandaged up during the break and was back for the rest of the show.
EDIT: Whoops...realized the OP asked for players/celebrities...sorry!

Regarding the PW+ one, was this on or just before the week with Dick Martin and Lucille Ball? I just dubbed an episode from this week and Allen refers to the current champion "calling out sick."

This isn't about a contestant, but I remember hearing that some guy died in the control booth on TPIR. Anyone know the details?
-
Associate Director Bob Gray suffered a heart attack in the booth, I believe.

There was a contestant on Global GUTS who was injured during an event and had to be replaced.

Several contenders on American Gladiators were too injured to continue.

I've seen that on "Wipeout" as well. Then there was this one guy on "Dog Eat Dog" who allegedly suffered brain damage due to oxygen deprivation during one of the underwater challenges.

I think the mechanism that was to vault him from the water upon a button press malfunctioned. When he eventually does fly out of the water, he's limp.

Didn't the Maxine Fabe book say this happened on some live show of the '50s or '60s?

in Italy many still remember the contestant that fainted on Wheel of Fortune.

the interesting part begins at 1:13 into the video.
Mike, true to his style, didn't care about her at all, then he just told the producer how to resume the taping.

One of the last times Gene Wood worked was on Combs' Family Challenge. I wqsn't present, but was told that he slipped on the slime from a stunt, fell, and finished the day in great pain. He then saw a doctor and learned he had broken or otherwise injured 2 or 3 ribs.
I was working the companion show, Wild Animal Games, and was called to fill in for Gene. I said it then and say it now... what a trouper for finishing the day.

Actually, Randy, I WAS there when the Family Challenge microphone incident happened. I was there on an outing with my grade class at the city day care center I was put into for after school, and we got to go to Family Challenge as a reward for the year (iirc, I think I was in 4th-5th grade). After we got a tour of the studios (which did include stopping by WAG, but it was empty at the time), we got to sit in the front row of the "audience" for the entire taping. I did see the incident occur live and thought nothing of it. IIRC, I think that was also a broken/bloody nose, I'd have to look at the clip again to make sure, it's been too long since I've seen it. I know after the show went to break, Gene did some warming up with the audience while the crew tended to Ray. Gene looked over to Ray and ended up saying to us something along the line of, "Looks like he just got in a fight with Mike Tyson." We all laughed, obviously. After a few minutes or so, Ray was out of his corner, back on the stage, and the taping continued. I will say, it definitely put a highlight to the day.
Just another wacky story to add to the list, folks :P

ISTR it was during a taping of Match Game. On TPIR Janice Pennington was knocked off the stage by camera 1.
Betty White turned her ankle while making an entrance on P+.

I lol'd.

Holly drove the Price is Right train off the stage and into the audience
JM J Bullock rolled his chair out the back of the Hollywood Squares
Joyce Bulifant walked head-first into the Password Plus sign
Chuck Woolery's microphone got caught in the Wheel of Fortune on a final spin
Only one of these actually happened on air. The rest might have happened, but the game show gestapo keeps the facts under lock and key. Guarded by Jeff Addis. Who lost the key.
-
I saw the episode where Joyce hits her head. As many know from the French/France blooper, the PW+ sign is lowered down again after the intro. Joyce didn't realize it was there, and hit her head.

It's in the book... how and why... and what Johnny was able to do.
During a lengthy wait for paramedics, the studio audience was kept calm, and some of the shock and awkwardness was diffused as Janice lay on the floor at the feet of the audience members after her fall. After Janice was carried her off, the mood returned to the familiar frenetic fun for the top of the show. A pretty amazing half-hour.
And, oh yes, Janice drove a car into the set, Holly tripped and fell carrying a one-bid item into contestants' row, and Dian blew a thing or two.

Match Game (forget the exact year) Gene gets scraped in the lips by an excited contestant's nails. ..... oh and Drew and the attack of the turntable.

I seem to recall an episode of Match Game where a celebrity (CNR or McLean?) was engaging in a faux-fight with Gene and accidentally punched/slapped Gene when he wasn't expecting it. The celeb hosted the rest of the program while Gene sat on the panel after quipping something to the effect of "The son-of-a-b*tch really hit me..."
Am I imagining this or did this happen?
