Title: From Life magazine in 1972: Ordeals of a 'Dating Game' player

A rather long story by a contestant, viewable in the original page images, which means (this being Life) with lots of photographs.

Like a mutant phoenix, the TV game show has risen from the ashes of The $64,000 Question and has proliferated, filling the hours between Mr. Greenjeans and the afternoon news, challenging the ratings supremacy of those once all-channel champions, the soap operas.

And this one, which makes perhaps more compelling reading:  From Oct. 26, 1959, a cover story about Charles Van Doren after the scandals broke but before he admitted his "deception."  Again, with lots of pics and many sidebars.

That line now can apply to today, as well.

Game shows were dead 15 years ago, although the tide slowly turned around in the late-90s. Millionaire pretty much revived the genre, which still thrives 10 years later. LMaD is just icing on the cake, now allowing multiple game shows in network daytime and syndication, with a couple here and there in primetime, and not to mention cable. That's something that hasn't been done in almost 40 years (not counting cable).

I assume Mark was challenging Brian on the claim that "that line" can apply to today, as opposed to "that general idea."

The "$64,000 Question" and "Mr. Greenjeans" references aren't particularly current to today, and neither is the "ratings supremacy" of soap operas (especially given that LMaD isn't being programmed against soap operas in much of the country).

Yeah...I mean, it's been how many years since Millionaire ditched the $64,000 question for the $50,000 question?  :-)

Completely off topic:

I love reading these on Google books. In this one (with the Dating Game reference), go down to page 72.
There's a great article about an up and coming QB for the UCLA Bruins who's making a name for himself.

That name? Mark Harmon from "NCIS" fame.
