I've started another TPiR thread; don't be surprised if there's a flame war!
Anyway, at priceisright.com, there's a behind-the-scenes clip with clips of Monday's season premiere. There are three changes in the show's opening:
*A light border has returned, though not the same one that was used for Season 36 and early Season 37.
*The opening is noticeably shorter; it now says, "Here it comes! From the Bob Barker studio at CBS in Hollywood, it's The Price Is Right!". No more "Television's most exciting hour of fantastic prizes" or "fabulous 60-minute".
*Drew's introduction is a more generic, "And now, here's your host, Drew Carey!". No more "star of The Price is Right".
-
I had heard that Drew wanted the "Star of TPIR" changed to host. That's so Drew.
Now if they could just find a way to get out of the "...from the Bobbo Studio..." opening
-
Cue WHAAAARGARBL in three...two....one....
-
Does anybody want my opinion?
- People will inevitably complain about the return of the light border, even though the same people complained about its removal - I'm sure the myriad of reasons will include "It's not the light box", "It's not the yellow border," and some statements that should be evaluated by a sanity commission.
- I'm curious as to what prompted this change... time? They thought it was redundant? Just because they wanted to? Whatever the reason - not a big deal.
- Same as the first item - people will inevitably complain that Drew is now called the "host", even though they were calling for the same when he started. If it was his decision to be called "host", good for him - the show's focus is its contestants and the games they play, not the guy with the mic (though, I'll be the first to admit he needs to improve on contestant-host interaction).
-
I thought I had read that they ALMOST cut out the "Bob Barker Studio" mention too, but I also see why they left it in.
I thought I also read that whether the host is billed as the "star" or "host" is up to the emcee.
Gene Rayburn was originally the HOST of MG and later billed as the STAR.
Richard Dawson was the STAR of FF while O'Hurley is the HOST
I think Peter Tomarken was the only one to get BOTH... "and now, here's your host, the STAR of PYL"
Heatter Quigley tried to be more creative with their host intros...
"And now, the MASTER of the Hollywood Squares..."
"And now, here's the man with all the action..." (High Rollers)
"And now, here's the man in command...." (Battlestars)

That came from Bill Carruthers' background of working with Chuck Barris, as both Bob Eubanks and Jim Lange were introduced the same way.
Of course, when Wipeout came along, he got even more than that....... see here. (http://\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fa3RvFNhVpo\")

It's not just game shows: "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" became "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno".

Good that Drew's not being called the "star" of TPIR anymore (that will always be Bob Barker, of course). And good that a new intro border's being introduced, as well.
-
I've thought for a very long time that they should drop the "fabulous 60-minute" line. It was impressive in 1975, but an hour-long game show isn't exactly unique today. Good riddance.
-
I'm indifferent about the opening spiel. But I like the new set.

Indeed. We've had a lot of 60-min game shows in the past 10 years; "Price" no longer stands out. But "Television's most exciting hour of fantastic prizes" still holds true.
Like John F., I like the new set somewhat. Granted, the new one-bid displays were not too necessary [I would assume they could've put LED bulbs into the old displays, but maybe the wiring or something was too old], and the showcase podiums will take getting used to. But the new home base/turntable is pretty darn nice.
-
Impressive all around!
- The light border is back and looks great! To me, it retains the familiarity of the original "box" but with a modern tie-in to the current show.
- The true stars of the show are the contestants. Not surprised Drew changed the intro to "...the host..." WTG!
- The set--freaking awesome!!
- EDIT--The opening spiel---not quite what I expected. It's going to take some getting used to. To me, it's like changing the rules Marc Summers used to spew out every day on Double Dare.
- Still not sold on the Showcase podiums though. While the new home base looks like Fremantle spared no expense, the podiums look like they were made from the wood leftover from building the home base. Maybe they'd look better if they were color-coordinated with the home base blue colors.
Just a thought--The new one bid displays and the showcase displays are welcome changes, but with the electronics changes taking place, one has to wonder when or if they're going to replace all the games' pricing displays (like the one used on Plinko or the big wheel) with LCD panels. Thoughts?
Overall, judging by the preview, I'd say that TPIR is on the right track. It's going to be a great season. The DVR is all set up!

Two questions:
A) Is Barker working on TPiR anymore?
B) You're saying that the nine people called up to play aren't stars?
Just trying to see where you're going with this.

Matt, you're forgetting my two faviorite ones which is mentioning the grand prize in their title.
The man who wants you to win $100,000, the star of Name That Tune, Tom Kennedy.
Here is the man with the million, Jim Lange.

The opening doesn't bother me. The light border is a bit busy with the checkerboards, but it's a nice touch that they brought back something.
As for the "star" status, doesn't really bother me either. One that DID always bother me was, on "Hollywood Squares", when Shadoe would say, "And STARRING Whoopi Goldberg, with Tom Bergeron your host!"...umm, there's only eight other celebrities who could be deserving of that title as well...
-
Could've always imported "but there could be no shooo without DROOOO!"

Yeah, but only one of 'em was EP and the focal point of the whole show.

Didn't the Vegas version of HS have a similar intro "And starring PAUL LYNDE with Peter Marshall" or something like that? I know someone posted an audio of the intro from the short lived Vegas run of HS.
Another interesting billing, in terms of hosts, was Monty's for the 90s LMAD "and now here's your special guest host, the big dealer himself, Monty Hall!"
Most of us know it was Monty's intention to find another host to replace Hilton, which in an American Archive interview, he said he HATED to do. I know I am going off topic a little, but Monty said that the producers of "Hello Larry" did NOT want Mc.Lean Stevenson, but Mc.Lean was under contract at NBC and in order to "sell the show", they reluctantly got Mc.Lean to star. (Hello Larry also featured Monty's Daughter Joanna Gleason). Just the same, Monty had to "sell" LMAD by taking back the reins himself.

Yes. While doing the warm-up for Ohio University's version of The Price Is Right, I'd give a quick history of TPiR, mention Bill Cullen's name and the sound of chirping crickets can be heard. Don Pardo will be happy to know that his name still sparks a responsive chord.

I got some great news about that last night. If they thought they were going to get away with it, they need to think again now. This is a big source of relief after the tragedy we feared. And, furthermore,.....WHAT THE HELL IS THAT????? just my cat.

Is Manuela still "filling in" while Brandi is on maternity leave or is this switch now permanent?

According to her bio on the site it says she's permanent. Says something like although she didn't win the Vote for The New PIR Model Home Contest or whatever it was called, the producers were so impressed with her that they gave her a permanent spot. That says to me either the winner (Jessica, I think her name was) backed out or they realized that having a dog as a TPIR model might piss off PETA or something.
/Sorry, I didn't think she was that cute

The intro seems watered down but that's only because I know differently. No average viewer is going to tell the difference, unless it's pointed out to them, and even then, I doubt they'd care.
Unfortunately.

Well maybe I'm making too much out of spoken words, but I believe that when something is watered-down, it loses part of what it used to be. That loss is unfortunate for many reasons, the most prevalent being that we'll likely never see an intro like that again. It is simply my opinion that, that also, is a loss.
/Losing the spinny comments is also a loss. One version of TPIR's identity erodes while another one grows in its place.

As a parent of a son who has sensory issues and has had an overload to just the big wheel spinning, personally I'm ok with the words being gone.
As said before, whammy, it's a change in a script, and a minor one at that. Is it "unfortunate" for America because you don't like it or because America's losing out on a few words?
-
I rather enjoyed the changes for season 38 and the set changes are especially nice. If I were going to give constructive criticism it would be for Drew to polish up on his explanations of the games rules. Otherwise, I'd say the show easily has another 2 seasons of life ahead of it, if not another 12.
-
The opening sounds a little disjointed, but that's likely from ears trained for the full vamp. The pulsing Door 5 during one-bids is more of a nuisance.
I wonder what a Joe Sixpack watching the "double-runs" thinks of the changes.
