This doesn't answer the question, but it's kinda related. One thing I noticed that sometimes when they say "way back in 1988" they don't usually show a clip, just a backstory. Would this be because they were on the Rodriguez version, or is it just clip research laziness (if GSN puts together the clips) or both?
The reason I ask is because I've seen this situation on a few occasions. However, didn't he take over as host in December of '88? That would be borderline '89 so the contestant pool from his version in '88 has to be somewhat limited.
Sometimes it looks like (due to condition of clips) that the couples bring their own tapes. I know some have the old bug from GSN on them but they could have (or had it) recorded it off of there.

It seems all syndicated runs exist. As does a hefty portion of the ABC daytime and nighttime runs, although, reportedly, the early portions of both of those runs suffer from heavy tape damage.

Approximately when is the oldest episode GSN has shown from?

They showed 8 episodes from 1969 on one of their "Game Show Saturday Nights". They also showed around 30-odd episodes from the '72-74 time frame (some during "Lover's Lounge"), including the finale.
